As she enjoying her food, the door burst open. Mrs. Gabriella standing there looking at her with concern.
“Oh sweetie,” she shut the door and went toward her.
“Mum, what are you doing here in the early morning?” Melody puts down her utensils. The woman hugs her, “Um…what’s wrong?”
“Don’t you ask me ‘what is wrong!” Mrs. Gabriella smacks her shoulder. “Where do you think you were going yesterday!? I came to visit you and you are not in the bed!!”
“Oh…um…” she scratches her head.
“Sweetie, please don’t tell me you went to meet Damian?” Mrs. Gabriella narrows her eyes on her.
Melody sighs, “I’m sorry, Mum. Yes, I am.”
“Why did you do that!? You know it’s dangerous to be around them! Especially my son!” She scolds her.
“Mum-”
“I know Damian might said something to you,” Mrs. Gabriella huffs. “I told that man to let you go-and yet he didn’t!”
“Mum, he didn’t do anything. I’m the one who decided to sneak out to meet him,” Melody tries to confront her.
Mrs. Gabriella looks at her with a frown. She knows that but she just doesn’t want to admit that.
“I don’t think It dangerous to be around them…around Damian. I felt…safe with him,” she smiles.
“Safe? No. You are not safe with Damian. I mean…” the woman pulls away, “Look at you. What have he done to you!?”
“He made you lose the baby. He is the cause of you being here and mourning for your baby, don’t you realise that, Mel?”
Melody gripped the blanket that lay on her lap. She does not like to walk about her baby that she just recently lost.
“If he didn’t involve you in his dark life, none of this will happen,” Mrs. Gabriella pinching the bridge of her nose.
“Mum, that-”
“He fails to protect you. He fails to be a husband and…and I should have known that. I’m sorry, sweetie. If I knew this would happen, I wouldn’t let him get married and ruin someone’s life.”
“Mum!” Melody snaps.
Mrs. Gabriella flinches and looks at her with shock. Not even once did she raise her voice toward Mrs. Gabriella.
“I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to raise my voice. I…I don’t like to talk about my baby right now,” she sighs. “None of this Damian’s fault…”
“Why are you saying that?” Mrs. Gabriella frowns.
“Because…Damian tried his best to protect me. I’m the one who jumps in and takes the bullet. Besides, if he didn’t appear in my life, I would have died in my step-father’s hand.”
Melody took her hand and held it gently. “He is struggling this whole time, Mum. Losing our baby… strikes him. Please…understand him.”
Mrs. Gabriella stares at her for a moment. She didn’t know what was wrong with her right now. She just desperate to protect Melody from any danger but she didn’t realise how struggling her son was.
“I…” she lost her words.
“It’s okay, Mum. I know you…you just want to do something right. There’s nothing wrong with that.” Melody smiles.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m sorry, Mel,” she sighs. “My husband was right. If I see my son fail to be a husband and father then…I see my husband fail as one too.”
“Damian has been tortured enough and here I am…torture him even more.”
“I’m sure Damian understands you,” Melody grins.
Mrs. Gabriella chuckles. “You always in positive vibe don’t you? No wonder Damian is weak around you.”
“That sounds cheesy but he is,” she giggles as she remembers last night’s scene. “Anyway, when can I be discharged?”
“Maybe next week, I’m not sure, sweetie,” Mrs. Gabriella fixes the blanket on her.
“I’m bored here…” she mumbles.
Mrs. Gabriella glanced at her. She knows how bored to stay in the hospital. Not only that, she knows how much Melody missed her home and friends.
“I will talk with the doctor. Maybe you can continue your treatment at home and hire a personal doctor for you, sweetie.”
Melody lifted her head, “Really?”
“Yes. Let me talk it out with the doctor.” Mrs Gabriella caresses her hair before walking out of the ward.
Melody let out a small sigh of relief. She felt much better after everything was settled. She couldn’t bear to see the relationship between a mother and son broke like that.
As she rested herself on the bed with her back on the headboard, she heard something. She turns to the door and sees a nurse walk in. Not the same nurse that always treats her, Caira.
“Good morning, Mrs. Melody. How are you today?” The nurse smiled gently at her as she shut the door and put the trolly toward her.
“Good morning. I’m fine today, thank you,” she glanced behind the nurse not to see anyone. “Um…where is Caira?”
“Oh, I will be the one who give you medicine today, ma’am,” the nurse replied.
“Didn’t Caira the only one who have the access to take care of me??” Melody furrows her eyebrows.
The nurse’s action halted. Then, she looks at Melody with a smile. “She is not available today, ma’am. So, I am being told to take over for today.”
Melody just replied with hummed. Even she could feel something was wrong. She watched the nurse doing her stuff. The nurse poured the medicine into one small cup before handing it to her.
“What is this?” Melody arches her eyebrows.
“Your everyday medicine, ma’am,” the nurse answers.
Melody holds the small cup, staring at the cup. The nurse packs her stuff, “Make sure to drink it, ma’am. It will help you feel much better.”
“Thank you,” Melody smiles.
The nurse nodded and bowed her head before bringing the trolly along with her and leaving the ward. Melody’s eyes went toward her shoes. The nurse only wore some informal shoes.
As far as she knows, this hospital has strict rules where the nurses have to wear the white formal shoes that have been given to them.
“My usual nurse couldn’t come today? Usually, if she can’t come, she will inform me or Mum will.” Melody talking to herself.
After a moment, she just shrugs her shoulder. “Well, whatever. Maybe Mum forgot after the touching moment just now.”
She brings the cup to her lips. As the liquid almost touches her tongue door opens and reveals her usual nurse, the one that was supposed to be ‘absent’ today walks in.
“Hello, good morning, ma’am,” Caira smiles and pushes in the trolly. “I’m sorry for being late today. I got some task to do.”
Melody stiffened. She looks at her as if she has seen a ghost. Caira smiles softly and furrows her eyebrows a bit.
“Ma’am? Are you okay?” She asks.
“You…You came?” Melody frowns.
“Um…yes. I am. Why wouldn’t I?” The nurse frowns.
“But…the other nurse just told me that you couldn’t come today,” Melody explains.
Caira arches her eyebrows in confusion, “Uh, no. I always come. I was late just now due to some task. I didn’t inform you I couldn’t come. If I did, I will inform you the day before.”
The nurse’s eyes went toward the cup in her hand. “What’s that, ma’am?”
“This is what that nurse gave me-wait…” Melody frowns. “Caira…do you guys can wear informal shoes right now?”
“No. Absolutely no. That’s against the rules, ma’am,” Caira answers.
Melody gritted her teeth. She puts the cup on the trolly and gets up causing Caira to be shocked by her sudden actions.
“M-Ma’am where are you going!?” She looks at Melody who try her best to walk.
She didn’t say anything and just left the wards. Melody walked at a fast pace, passing every staff and patient. The nurse is not the real nurse here.
How can the guards who guard her door let that nurse in? Melody looks around to find her.
The nurse who just pretended to be one standing in the locker room. She takes off her uniform and changes into her shirt and jeans. Her phone rang.
“Hello?” She picks up.
“So, how is the work?” Matthias speaks.
“I already did, sir,” the woman answers.
“Good job. I’m sure Melody didn’t suspect you, isn’t she?” He asks.
The woman smirks and shuts the locker room, “I’m sure, sir. She just an innocent and naive one.”
“Good. Now, leave the hospital before anything happens,” Matthias demands.
“Right away, sir,”
The woman hung up and put her phone in her pocket. She grabbed her bag and before she could walk off, the door burst open. Melody standing there looking at her in shock.
The women gasp and turn to run.
“WAIT!” Melody ran after her and grabbed her hair.
The woman grunts and slips her stomach making Melody let her go. She grunts in pain. Melody managed to dodge every hit she delivered.
Then, Melody grabs the fist she delivered, pulls her and slams her on the locker. “You are not the nurse. Who are you!?”
“It such a surprise that you notice it,” the woman chuckles.
“Every little mistake can ruin any plan. Poor you, you are not good enough to keep it,” Melody speaks.
The women elbow her stomach then turns and gives a hard kick to her stomach. Melody’s back hit the locker. The women took the chance and ran.
“HEY!!” Melody grunts in pain as she clutches her stomach.
She pushes herself to catch after the women. Melody tries her best to push away the staff and some patients who are on her way.
Soon, she is out of the hospital and loses sight of the woman. Melody catches her breath as she looks around. Everyone who passed by looked at her with concern and confusion.
“Damn…I lose her…” she sighs.
Melody hissed as she felt stings. She looks down only to see her hospital gown covered in blood. She clutches her stomach and it seems her wounds are open.
“Melody?”
She turned around to see Damian and the others standing there in confusion. Damian’s gaze went down to her stomach and his expression changed.
“Dam…someone…came-” Before she could finish her sentence, she went limp and Damian managed to catch her in his arms.
