“Where are your domestic staff? I can’t find them around.” I started the conversation with a joke to lighten the mood after seeing how angry Adrian had become.
“I laid them off for a reason,” he responded harshly. I could tell he wasn’t comfortable with the question.
“I see. Must be weird living alone in this big mansion, isn’t it? Don’t tell me, I can relate,” I cracked another joke that didn’t even sound funny to me.
“Enough with your dry jokes. Is that what you came here to do? Because I don’t seem to understand you anymore,” Adrian groaned.
“Kate’s gone now, so you better start talking and quit your silly jokes. That’s not funny. I’m done tolerating your silent treatment. I need nothing but the truth from you. And please, no more jokes,” Adrian demanded, shutting the door to prevent Kate from distracting us.
“Kate is right about what she said earlier.” I made the bold step to confess.
“It’s too early to get mad at me because I’m not done talking,” I added quickly, calming Adrian’s nerves the moment I noticed he was about to yell.
“I don’t know how Cyril got photos of us together, but what I know for sure is that we are in serious trouble. We need to act fast before it gets messier. It’s only a matter of time before he starts coming for you,” I explained tirelessly.
Adrian paused, placing his hands below his jawline. He paced around for a few minutes before returning to me.
“Is that the reason you kept calling my phone? Because you thought he might have done something to hurt me?”
“Exactly! And we both know how crazy that son of a bitch can be. Do you know the most shocking part of it all? The jerk had the nerve to record our conversation as evidence that I was cheating on him. Can you imagine that?” I lamented bitterly, finally able to explain without mincing words after nearly freaking out earlier.
“That’s ridiculous coming from someone who has a chronic chest. I see no reason he should be mad at you when he isn’t a saint either. He should be ashamed of himself for such an act. It’s quite unfortunate that he can’t dish out what he can’t accept,” Adrian taunted Cyril, even in his absence.
“Adrian, stay focused. Can’t you see that we’ve got a problem already? This isn’t the time to blame anyone. We are in desperate need of a solution, and this is the best you can do? Hell no, I expected more from you,” I snarled.
I might detest Cyril and everything about him, but what I couldn’t handle was seeing Adrian act like everything was fine when it was clear my life was in crisis.
“Forget about Cyril and pretend like he doesn’t even exist. He’s not going to do anything to hurt you. He should be the least of your issues,” Adrian assured me, speaking with so much confidence.
I watched him walk to the bar to grab a bottle of whiskey and two glasses. He handed one over to me and poured a small portion of liquor inside.
I had a shot, and my head was already banging hard. I had to drop the glass immediately. “I need to leave now. See you at the party tomorrow.”
I was already feeling tipsy after the first shot of liquor. I wouldn’t want to do something stupid. The last time I visited his house and got drunk, we ended up having sex.
It would be so foolish of me to let that happen again, knowing I should have done something to stop it.
“No way.” He pulled me back.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to come with you? I mean, for protection. That son of a bitch Cyril shouldn’t be trusted. What if he shows up and hurts you?” Adrian asked, his concern genuine.
He might be right on that one, but I wasn’t comfortable letting him come home. If Cyril showed up, it would only confirm his allegations about my affairs with Adrian.
“That’s not a good idea. If I were you, I would prepare myself for war because I bet Cyril is coming for you,” I warned Adrian. I knew the man I married and his capabilities.
Moments after I warned Adrian, he got a call from Cyril. I smiled, knowing I saw that coming. It was obvious that Cyril was ready for war.
“Don’t answer that phone. Just ignore him,” I told Adrian.
Cyril had caused us more harm than good. Why should Adrian answer the phone when we already knew what Cyril wanted to talk about? That would be a total waste of time.
“To defeat the enemy, we have to confront him,” Adrian said. While I struggled to understand what he was talking about, he was already on the phone with Cyril.
He put it on speaker to get me involved in the conversation. It was too late for me to act.
Minutes into the call, no one said a word. I could tell the two of them were trying to play it safe to avoid implicating themselves.
“It wasn’t enough for you to steal my wife, you still had the guts to ignore my calls? How dare you, Adrian? Do you even have an idea who you’re dealing with?” Cyril broke the silence just as I expected.
He made more sense while he was quiet. I wasn’t shocked by his statement because I knew nothing good would come out of him.
“For the record, Olivia isn’t your wife anymore because the last time I checked, you filed for divorce. Why are you sounding so pained, anyway? You already have Rene in your life. I see no reason you should be bothered by what Olivia does or who she’s with. Let me guess, you’re sick and tired of Rene already, aren’t you?” Adrian laughed mischievously, mocking Cyril.
Where I was, I felt it. I couldn’t help but laugh. I got carried away by the fun and forgot Cyril was still on the phone.
Before I could regain myself, it was too late. Cyril already knew I was with Adrian. Trust him to scream.
“Isn’t that the voice of Olivia I just heard? What is she doing at your place?”
“Get on with your life, loser. It’s obvious you’re bored and lonely,” Adrian shot back, making Cyril appear stupid in the process.
“Adrian, the battle line has just been drawn. Trust me when I say you won’t live to enjoy this. I will make your life miserable, and that’s a promise,” Cyril vowed. I could already imagine him clenching his fists.
“You will do nothing, Cyril. Now listen to me. If anything bad happens to either Olivia or me, you will spend the rest of your life in jail. I’m not kidding. I fucking meant what I said,” Adrian fired back and ended the call.
I didn’t know when I jumped on him and said, “I am proud of you.”
I proceeded to kiss him so passionately.
I found my knight in shining armor, and I’m not ready to lose him for anything in this world.
“I guess I’ll see you at the party tomorrow, right?” Adrian asked, holding my arms tenderly, not wanting to let go.
I stopped being scared of the danger Cyril posed. I felt stronger mentally and more confident in Adrian than I was in myself.
“Sure! I will. I wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world,” I assured Adrian and blew him a kiss.
As I was heading to the exit door, he called me back. “Don’t forget, whenever you’re in trouble, just call on me, and I’ll be your Batman in Gotham City.”
“Aye, sire,” I saluted Adrian and bowed out with a fulfilled soul, knowing my problems had been sorted out already.
Kate was already dozing off when I arrived at the car. After a hectic day, I expected her bones to be weak.
I got into the car and tapped her. “Start the car and let’s leave.”
“What happened? Your mouth stinks of liquor. Your hair is rough too. I hope it’s not what I’m thinking.”
“Shut the fuck up and drive, Kate. I’ll explain when we get home,” I dodged her question and smiled.
