There was a large mirror in the bathroom.
Callie took off her outer clothes and unbuttoned her inner wear until she was completely naked. She turned around, her back facing the mirror.
There, on her butterfly bone, was a cloud-like birthmark.
It was identical to Charlotte’s, in the exact same spot.
Callie stared at the birthmark for a long time, remembering how she used to chase after Reuben as a child, asking, “Dad, why do I have a birthmark?”
Reuben would pat her head and say, “Do you think it’s ugly?”
“No, I’m just curious why others don’t have one but I do.”
Every summer, she avoided wearing revealing clothes. Even with Nelson in bed, she always covered her back. When he asked, she would say she didn’t like being seen from behind; it made her feel unsafe.
Nelson respected her and never forced her.
Reuben once said, “This birthmark might be a clue to finding your biological parents. So, in a way, it’s a blessing, isn’t it?”
Callie nodded but then shook her head. “I don’t want to find my biological parents. I’m happy with you.”
Reuben was relieved and affectionately called her silly.
Thinking back on those days, Callie felt a pang of sorrow with each memory.
She often felt like she was dreaming. Seeing the birthmark on her back made everything real. This mark that had been with her for over twenty years now played a crucial role.
Her suspicions were confirmed.
Maevelyn and Callie. How similar they were.
Even their eyebrows and eyes shared some resemblance.
Every time she saw Ahmad and Sienna, she felt an inexplicable familiarity.
Fate had been hinting at her true identity all along, but she had used various excuses to avoid the truth.
Eliza had been waiting outside for a long time and knocked anxiously. “Callie, are you okay?”
Callie didn’t hear her. Cold water poured over her head, making her feel incredibly clear-headed.
No one knew about this birthmark except Reuben. How could Charlotte replicate it so perfectly?
If she was real, how did Charlotte pass the DNA test? Nelson even conducted a separate one.
Was she… fake?
Callie opened her eyes, her breathing becoming heavy.
Someone had tampered with the results. Charlotte couldn’t have done it alone. How many people were behind this?
She had accidentally uncovered a massive conspiracy. She needed immense wisdom to solve this mystery. She had a strange premonition-
Maybe solving this puzzle would lead her to Reuben!
After what seemed like an eternity, Callie finally opened the bathroom door. Eliza looked worried. “Callie, you scared me to death.”
Callie dried her hair with a towel and forced a smile. “Sorry, I’m fine. Just feeling a bit down.”
Eliza seemed half-understanding. “Um… Jamir came back with you, right? His car has been parked downstairs all this time.”
Callie raised an eyebrow and walked to the balcony. Sure enough, she saw Jamir leaning against his car downstairs, smoking nonchalantly. His demeanor was just like the young master he was in college.
He saw her and his eyes curved into a smile as he waved.
Callie closed the balcony door and returned to the room.
Eliza was very curious. “Callie, do you know Jamir?”
“He… is an old acquaintance,” Callie chose her words carefully. She didn’t plan to tell anyone about her discovery tonight because she didn’t know who to trust.
