Kamara’s POV
I stood there, stunned. For a moment, I didn’t know what I would do, and I could see from Diego’s eyes that he was in a dilemma also, but I couldn’t care one bit. He put me in this mess; he should find a way to fix it. But I couldn’t just sit here and wait for him to make a decision.
Despite my fear, I headbutted the bastard standing behind me, and that was enough time for him to lose his balance and for me to take the gun from his hand. Pointing the gun towards him, an arm was suddenly wrapped around my waist, yanking me out of the room at full speed.
I was still panting, my hands shaking as I grabbed the gun in my hand tightly. I wanted to let go, but I was too shocked to let go. “Damn it, stay close to me next time, or it’ll be worse than this.” He said through his heavy breathing as he made his way towards the exit.
“Are you blaming me now? Who was the one who forced me into the first aid room when I was obviously okay and didn’t need to be tended to?” I hissed as he placed me in the car, buckling the belt before staring up at me. He looked like he wanted to say something more aggressive before he stopped.
“Are you hurt?” He asked, his tone soft and laced with a hint of concern.
“I could have been worse if you hadn’t taken care of your mess.” I hissed angrily, rubbing my jaw, which Vando had grabbed earlier. It still hurt, and I felt as if steel dug into my skin, and it hurt even more as I touched it.
Diego closed the door before getting into the driver’s seat and driving off at full speed. I didn’t know how long we drove because I passed out halfway into the journey. By the time I opened my eyes, I could hear the beeping of machines in the room and distant voices.
“Thankfully, she is fine, and the baby is fine. If anything worse had happened to her, I am not sure if your child would have survived.” I heard the doctor say, and a relieved sigh from Diego.
“Dang that Vando, prepare the men. I’ve had right about enough of this shit.” I heard him hiss, and I finally opened my eyes, turning my head to look at him. I wanted to say something against what he had just said, but I decided to keep quiet and just watch as the nurses rushed over to me to check up on me.
I quietly observed as Diego stood there, staring at me, but I didn’t look back at him. “The wound you got from the shot was open all through, and it might hurt more than usual, but I’ll make sure to give some drugs to numb the pain. And to keep further check on you and the baby, you’ll have to stay in the hospital for a while.” The doctor explained to me, and I nodded gently.
“The nurses would bring you some soup to take. See if you don’t get nauseous or anything.” The doctor said, and I nodded before he headed out with the nurses. Diego slowly approached the bedside, looking at me, and I stared back at him, not saying a word either.
“Are you fine now?” He asked, obviously not knowing what to say, and neither did I, so I just hummed before my mind drifted back to Nana.
“Nana, how is she?” I asked, attempting to get out of bed, but he stopped me, gesturing towards the IV connected to my arm, and I just tutted before sitting back in bed.
“Nana is good. He said she should wake up soon.” He said, his tone was a bit assuring, but I just ignored it. I would focus on getting better so I could just go see her and take care of her myself. “I’m sorry you had to get caught up in my business…”
“Yes, you should be. I almost lost my life there, Diego. I didn’t sign up for this, no matter how absurd what I signed up for is. I’m sure you’re not dumb enough not to know if I did, there’s no way you can have the child you oh so desired to have from me.” I reminded him, serious about every single word I uttered.
“Yes, I’m sorry, okay. Damn it, I didn’t know they would stoop so low to the point of bringing Nana and the child into this.” He said, running his fingers through his hair, and I stared at him. “Look, what I’m trying to say is that I am sorry for getting you involved in this. I’ll do better next time and make sure you aren’t involved in any of my messes, okay?”
I didn’t give him a reply when the door flung open, and I saw Chantelle rush into the room, tears in her eyes as she flung herself at me. “Oh my goodness, Kam. Once I heard what happened, I immediately rushed over to the next train I could catch, and now I’m here.” She sobbed, taking my face in her palm. I gave her a fake smile, which she knew pretty well, but she knew she didn’t have to bother me into laughing right now.
She turned back to look at Diego with me still in her hands. “Where’s Nana, Diego?” She asked, and he just gestured out towards the door. “Look, I didn’t give my best friend to you to have her be involved with all your mafia shenanigans. I value her more than whatever reason you two are together. We don’t want to lose Nana over this, too, so I’m pretty sure you understand what I’m driving at.” Chantelle said to him before walking past him, guessing to go see Nana.
“Just get some rest, Kamara. If you need anything, they’ll help you with it.” Diego said before heading out of the room, and for the first time, something he said stood out to me.
He actually called my name when speaking to me!
