CHAPTER 107
ROBERT’S POV
~ As I waited for him to return my chats, I peeped into the surveillance equipment. On seeing Lily had arrived and was already seated at her table, working on her laptop, everything else I was doing became history in the blink of an eye. I swept off the potato chips and beer from the tabletop, making a mess. My phone nearly fell too. But I didn’t care as I adjusted the equipment and began to watch Lily. ~
From the focused distance, I could see she was frustrated. She pushed her seat back away from the table. She ran her fingers through her lush hair, disheveling it and there was this angry look on her face almost as if she regretted doing something.
I took my eyes off the equipment, my brows furrowing. She was too beautiful to be in this kind of distress. If she was acting this way, that meant she also had a bad night like me or even worse. Maybe she felt guilty for what she did to me yesterday. Maybe there was a chance she still loved me but was fighting her feelings just as I fought mine for her years back. I did love her then but found it hard to admit because I felt she was way off my league and my heart belonged to Scarlett.
My mood lifted in an instant. I felt relieved like a burden had been lifted off my heart. But I tried not to get too hopeful. There might be another reason she was that way. It could be because things weren’t going well with work. The kids might be giving her a hard time or it was just something else entirely. I couldn’t really tell.
I looked back into the equipment only to see Noah. This man again?? He had this troubled look on his face as he addressed Lily sternly with his phone in his hand. I didn’t know why but a growl escaped my lips as my possessive nature took control. Maybe because I saw him as a threat. Not only was I dealing with Martin, now I also dealing with him. I didn’t want these two getting close to Lily. My Lily. I was afraid they’d draw her attention away from me and she’d end up with either of them instead of me. I didn’t want that to happen.
The security guard had told me Noah was the boss of the company. He said Noah granted Lily automatic employment without following the normal procedures for employing his workers at the company. After seeing Lily’s outstanding performance, he promoted her to the position of co-partner and CEO of the agency. That explained why she came to that meeting yesterday.
I’m surprised and also suspicious he offered her automatic employment-something I never allow in my agency. There, you need the right degrees and qualifications to get the job. If he hired her so easily, then there’s more to their relationship. Maybe they’ve known each other for a long time. Perhaps, since childhood. But as far as I know, Noah never attended the same school as Lily and I, and she was never the type to keep many friends, especially male friends. She was always shy and reserved, caught up in her world.
“No….” I shook my head as I tried not to think of the worst-case scenario. I have heard stories about a lot of females sleeping with their bosses just to climb the ladder of success. But I know Lily wasn’t like that. She’s good. If she got the job and rose to that position that meant she worked hard for it and deserved it.
I could see Lily leave her table and approach him desperately, almost as if she was apologizing for something or pleading with him. I couldn’t understand. Was he mad at her? What did she do? If only I had that security guard implant some sort of audio equipment in her office so I could hear everything they were saying clearly.
Anger clouded my expression. I didn’t like the way he was treating her. How desperate she seemed. She even held his arm to stop him as he wanted to leave. Maybe he was mad because she didn’t stay for the meeting yesterday. And it was all my fault. I knew he was her boss and her presence was crucial at that meeting but that didn’t give him the right to vent all that anger and frustration on her. Why didn’t he attend the meeting himself? But come to think of it, if he did then I wouldn’t have met Lily. It was better he didn’t come at all.
He opened the door and the security guard appeared with the flowers I told him to send to Lily. Red roses. Her favourite. It was one of the few things I knew she liked. Even though she hates me, I hope she likes it 1and accepts my invitation for us to meet because I have a whole lot to tell her.
After learning of Lily’s house address yesterday from the security guard, I wanted to go immediately but then decided against it. It won’t be a wise choice judging from how she treated me yesterday. I thought hard. That was when I decided it was best I watched her from a distance and sent her gifts, waiting patiently for what happened yesterday to slide. If only she can agree to meet me, I’ll explain everything to her. We’ll resolve this issue faster than I could ever imagine and head back home.
But to my greatest dismay, she dumped the flower in the bin and the note without a second thought. I’m not even sure she read what was written in the note. She had this scowl on her face as she settled down and typed furiously.
Noah sat down on the seat in front of her. He no longer had that troubled and angry look he once had. It had softened. I couldn’t understand what was happening between them. It was making me boil. As if that wasn’t enough, Lily reached across the table and took his hand in hers.
“That’s it!” I said as I furiously got up and started packing to go. I can’t take this anymore. I’m heading there. I don’t care what happens.
