Callie hadn’t expected to get any useful information from Sienna, but the trip left her feeling increasingly uneasy.
“What exactly feels off?” Eliza, driving in the front seat, asked curiously.
Charlotte seemed strange, almost as if she was worried about something being discovered.
Callie couldn’t pinpoint it and shook her head. “How long until we get back to the hotel?”
Eliza glanced at the GPS. “About an hour.”
The temple was far from the hotel. Callie thanked her and closed her eyes for a short nap.
She was jolted awake by a crash. The car had been hit, causing her to lurch forward and bump her forehead against the seat, leaving a bruise. “What happened?”
Eliza was terrified, her lips pale. “Callie… someone hit us!”
Callie rubbed her forehead and looked ahead, seeing a black car blocking their path with a clear intent of confrontation.
Looking in the rearview mirror, she saw several cars behind them, effectively trapping them.
The road was secluded, usually devoid of traffic, making it a perfect spot for an ambush.
Callie took a deep breath, feeling a sense of foreboding.
Eliza was speechless with fear.
Men got out of the cars, looking fierce and carrying iron rods as they approached.
Callie snapped back to reality and immediately took out her phone. She scanned her contacts and dialed 911. The call connected quickly. “Hello, how can we assist you?”
The bodyguards had surrounded the car and politely knocked on the window.
“I… you can trace my number’s location, right? I don’t know where we are, but we’re surrounded by gangsters. Please come quickly!”
She finished speaking just as the bodyguards lost patience and smashed the car window with their rods.
Eliza screamed. “What… what do you want?”
One of them, with a scarred face, leaned in to look at the back seat. “We meet again, Miss Marsh.”
Callie gripped her phone tightly, recognizing him as cold sweat broke out on her forehead. “… You… you’re one of Owen’s men.”
The man smiled. “Seems like you remember well. When Jaquan took you on that highway chase, I was there too. I remember you clearly.”
Callie’s sweat intensified. “What do you want?”
The man’s smile faded as he raised his hand. The other bodyguards swung their rods, smashing the car with deafening noise before dragging Callie out.
“Lady, after you escaped, Owen went through a lot of trouble to find you but couldn’t. Guess what?” The man pinned her to the ground, pressing an iron rod against her chest. “Jaquan almost lost his life!”
Callie gasped, trying to stay calm. “I assume you didn’t find me just to kill me. Owen wants me alive, right?”
The man pressed harder. “That doesn’t mean I can’t teach you a lesson first!”
Callie endured the pain.
She had only been here for less than a day, with a secretive itinerary. Owen’s men finding her so quickly was highly suspicious.
Someone had tipped them off, wanting her dead!
Callie regretted coming out so hastily. She feared she had become Owen’s most wanted person. Anbusea was already unsafe for her; now divorced and without Nelson’s protection, she was even more vulnerable…
