“Axel.” Lily called as they entered the elevator.
“Yeah?” He asked and turned to her.
“What is with the sudden rush? Are you trying to avoid my question?” She asked.
“What would you like to have? I am thinking we should go to a fast food restaurant.” He replied, ignoring her question. Lily sighed and decided to drop the question. He was obviously avoiding it.
“I am fine with anything.” Lily replied and he nodded.
“Axel, why… ”
“What about after lunch? What should we do then?” He cut Lily off and she frowned at him.
“What? What’s with the frown?” He asked and poked her cheek which made her smile.
“I didn’t like the way you cut me off. I wanted to ask you an important question.” She said,
“Oh, okay. What is it?” Axel asked and stared at her.
“Why are you being so nice to… ” Lily trailed off as the elevator opened and Axel paid less attention to her. He pulled her out of the elevator gently and Lily frowned.
He noticed she was upset and he paused, he looked at her and she let go of his hand and folded her arms.
“What? What is it?” He asked and cupped her cheeks as he ignored the stares they were getting.
“You are not paying attention to me and you keep cutting me off.” Lily whined and he chuckled.
“Of course I am. Just because I choose not to answer you, doesn’t mean I am not paying attention to you. You asked me why I am being nice to you right?” He asked and she nodded in response.
He moved closer to her and kissed her forehead then her nose, and her cheek. He trailed the kiss down to her neck and Lily giggled out loud.
“It’s because you are my wife.” He said and Lily’s face lit up. Axel stared at her eyes and recalled the night he met her.
He could recall how she was so scared. She was so innocent and knew nothing. His eyes moved to her lips and he leaned closer to kiss her when he suddenly heard murmurs from every corner of the room.
He forgot about the people around him. Lily’s cheeks heated up as Axel pulled away from her.
“Come on.” He muttered and pulled her gently out of the building as they paid no attention to Axel’s employees.
They got outside and both entered the car, Axel drove out of the parking lot into the streets.
The drive was silent, they both had a lot going on in her head. Lily kept thinking about what happened minutes ago while Axel kept thinking about how he ended up with a person like Lily.
He knows he doesn’t deserve her, she is too good for him, she is too good for anyone. If there is another world apart from this, maybe she will belong there. Even the world is too cruel for her.
“Is the fast food restaurant far?” Lily asked and Axel glanced at her.
“We will be there in less than five minutes.” He answered and she smiled and looked away from him.
They arrived at the restaurant and they both walked out of the car, since it was a fast food restaurant and it was just a little bit close to noon, it wasn’t so filled.
Lily and Axel made their way in and they sat at a table. They placed their order and in less than two minutes, they got their order.
Lily smiled happily and started eating her fries while Axel watched her, each time she looked up at him, he hurriedly looked away from her and picked on his food.
He realised he had been too playful around Lily and it bothered him a little. Being playful was the last thing he wanted. His business and reputation are the only things he is supposed to be focused on.
Not playing with Lily and getting her to smile all the time.
His phone beeped and Lily looked up at him.
Axel picked up his phone and stared at the text he received. It was a text from Nora.
“Mrs. Blackwell is hosting a ball tonight.” He said out loud.
“Oh, your stepmom.” Lily said and he gave her a look. A stern look.
“Why the hell is she hosting a ball out of the blue?” He muttered as he texted Nora back.
“Mrs. McCall will be there.” Lily said with a worried look.
“Oh, your mum?” Axel asked and she glared at him.
“You are so childish for doing that.” Lily scoffed and paid attention to her meal.
“Isn’t she your mum?” Axel asked and she hit her cutlery against her plate. She was so mad, she hated Mrs. McCall being called her mother.
Axel was surprised by her reaction, she looked up at him and he noticed the tears that were welling in her eyes.
“We aren’t having lunch anymore.” Axel said and dropped a few dollars on the table and stood up. He walked out of the restaurant and left Lily behind.
She wiped her tears and walked out of the restaurant, she joined Axel in the car and he drove away immediately.
He drove too fast with a stern look on and Lily was scared they would crash.
“Can you slow down please?” Lily asked but he ignored her.
“Axel.” She called but he still ignored her. He took a turn and suddenly stopped the car and the side of the road.
“What is… ”
“Do I need to remind you about the way you should speak to me?” He asked as he turned to her.
“I didn’t mean to snap at you, I… ”
“You don’t speak until I am done talking.” He cut her off and raised his voice a little. Lily flinched and shut her eyes in fear.
She was too scared to open her eyes and look at him, she didn’t want to see him mad, it terrified her. He has that same look when he is about to pull a trigger on a person’s head.
She heard the ignition and she slowly opened her eyes, he was driving again.
“I’m sorry.” Lily whispered with tears streaming down her cheeks.
In minutes, they got to the company and Axel walked out of the car, Lily also did.
She was about to follow him in and he stopped then turned to her.
“Nora will be here to pick you up in a few minutes, you can wait in the car or stand if you prefer to. Suit yourself.” He said and walked into the company leaving Lily in tears.
