Zoey p. o. v
I was bewildered and lost. Different thoughts clashes in my skull, I couldn’t pinpoint any thought that was going through my head. They were rapid and blurry, but I am aware of how scared I was.
I flinch at the sound of a door slamming shut, effectively snapping me from the dazed. I was unable to bring myself to look at the entrance door, scared that it might be the man.
Light footsteps approached me, I didn’t tense up as the sound of the footsteps was that of a female. To prove my point, Camilla appeared before me. I relaxed a bit, I didn’t want her to start questioning why I was tensed, I mentally waited for Isabella to appear beside her.
“Where is Isabella?” I asked when I noticed she wasn’t there.
Why did Camilla come alone, that’s unlikely for them to pay me a visit without the other?
“At home, stalling Marco,” Camilla announced. My body went into overdrive, tightening at the mention of Marco’s arrival.
He’s most likely going to be pissed with me. Since I stubbornly went ahead and got a job when I was told not.
I shouldn’t be scared of Marco’s reaction, this is my life and I should take responsibility and make decisions for myself. Even though I had the right to make my own decisions, I still waited for Marco to come back, so I can convince him to let me work as per Camilla’s request.
Until a week ago, when hasn’t come back from his business trip, so I’ve been told. I decided it was enough of me waiting, and I took this job. But why am I scared, why am I nervous about what his reaction would be?
“It’s only a matter of time before he discovers you are not home and comes looking for you. And I don’t think Isabella can stall him for long, we need to leave.”, Camilla said, sounding urgent.
“I have work, Camilla.” I rolled my eyes, even if he was going to be mad. He can’t keep controlling me, he has to come to terms with me always going against him if he wants me to stay in his house.
“You won’t in the next five minutes and so is your boss, he’ll lose this place if Marco gets here.” She wasn’t kidding about that, I might not know what he will do if he’s angry, but I’m certain it won’t be good.
My boss’s door slammed open, interrupting me. Mr. White came out, jogging to us.
“I’m sorry Zoey, you are one of my promising employees I had, but I had to let you go.” He was slightly breathless as he spoke and was visibly trembling.
As much as I wanted to go against Marco’s demand, I didn’t want to have an innocent person like Mr. White in trouble. Especially not with Marco.
I didn’t bother with concealing my anger as I pulled the apron around my waist, slammed it on the table, and marched out. I was fuming, I bet my face will be red as tomatoes.
I fist my hands, keeping them from shaking because of the rage boiling inside me. My heart rate sped up, and my mind went a thousand miles per second.
I wanted to yell out my lungs or hit something, anything, or Marco. Anything to release this amount of rage from me.
Camilla was close behind, before precipitously stepping around me and leading me to the car pack in front of the restaurant. The minute we settled in, the driver sped off.
It wasn’t long before we arrived at the house, as much as I dread coming down from this car. And facing Marco, I had to put a stop to all this shit.
I came down from the car and made my way to the house, totally not expecting the scene awaiting me. I second I stepped foot into the living room, I froze. Taking off guard.
The living was a mess, the couches, and the throw pillows were scattered and messed up. In the middle of the chaos was another chaos, Marco stood in front of five of his men.
Each of them was beaten up badly, with broken limbs. Broken fingers, broken legs, and arms, one even had a knife still buried in his thigh. The only light injury on them is busted lips, deformed noses, and purple bruises on their eyes.
I choked out a sob, at the scene.
God! What have I done? I promised myself that I won’t get an innocent person in trouble with Marco, yet here are five innocent men dragged into my mess.
Marco threw a punch at the middle guy, his groan of pain was what got me moving. I ran to them, coming around Marco and hugging him, my actions effectively halted him from throwing the first he had in the air.
“Please stop.” I sobbed uncontrollably. His muscles tensed, and so did his breath. “Please stop hitting them, it’s my fault, they didn’t do anything.”
I heard him take a huge amount of air into his lungs, I was secretly hoping it will release some anger I can feel was boiling inside him.
“Release me, Zoey.” He said through grit teeth, he was holding back. I know he’s mad at me, but I can’t let him take out his anger on his men.
“No,” I said stubbornly.
“I’ll deal with you later, release me now.” He growled, barely keeping his anger at bay.
I shook my head against him, holding him tightly. I’m scared that if I let go, he will cause more harm to them. We stood like that for a few minutes before he finally loosened up, not completely but more so than before.
“Fine.” He muttered. “Where were you? These bastards won’t say anything.” He seethes.
It was my turn to tense up. How do I tell him what I’ve been doing for a week now, it might get more angry and the fact that his men refused to tell him? That may be a death wish for them.
And I was to be blamed.
“You were away for… “I started feebly.
“Where were you?” He interrupted me. His voice was colder and harder, he gazed down at me. I won’t lie and say that I was intimidated, I flinched slightly from his cold eyes.
“I was working.” I lipped quietly, hoping they would not hear. But from the terrifying silence in the room, it’s obvious that what I said was loud and clear.
It was the longest 30 seconds of my life as I waited for his response.
“I told you not to, did I not?” He is oddly calm, not what I was expecting.
“Yes, you did. But I waited for you to come back for a week, and when you didn’t, I decided to get a job.” I was quick to defend myself because though he’s calm. I don’t trust him not to lash out.
He pulled my arms that were locked around him away, he turned to face his siblings. They immediately had their heads faced down.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me about it.” He reprimanded them. “Why? Why didn’t I hear a word about it.” He yelled when nobody dare to say anything.
Even I flinched, I didn’t know it will end this way. I didn’t mean for anyone to get hurt, I just wanted to make something out of my existence. Instead of waiting on someone’s money.
The sound of gunshots shook my spine, and my blood ran cold. I followed the groans and I locked gaze on two of his men, one gripping his arms and the other gripping his thigh. Both were howling in pain.
I slapped a hand over my mouth, not to keep the sob that threatened to escape, but the wave of nausea that hit me. The sight was disgusting and heart wrecking to watch.
“That will teach you where your loyalty lays next time.” He said in a heartbeat, stomping off to God knows where.
“Let’s get them to a hospital,” I yelled, rushing to them. Camilla, Isabella, and Luciano came to assist me. Some of his men who were present in the room came to help as well, but instead of walking out the front door.
They were going in the opposite direction, to a door that I haven’t seen open once. But before I could ask where they were going, Luciano spoke.
“I think you should go to Marco, he might need you.” He suggested.
My face pulled into a frown, why would I go to him?
“He doesn’t need me, and I need to get these guys to take treatment. I am responsible for their situation, so it’s my duty to see to it that they are safe.” I hissed, my lip pulled up in a scowl.
“It’s best if you don’t come with us, Marco wouldn’t want you to be there.” He reasoned.
I went silent for a while, weighing the options. I nodded for them to go without me, I do not want to piss him off more right now.
“But I keep me posted,” I called after them, Isabella nods at me before the door closed.
