Chapter 11
Valerie’s POV
My phone rang again. It was my mom this time. What does she want?
“Hello, Mom.”
“My dearest, how have you been? Your father and I have been worried sick about you. I tried reaching out to you many times.” She sounded very worried.
“I’m fine, Mom. You need not worry about me.” I reassured her.
“Val. I understand how you feel about the marriage deal. Trust me, Valerie. Getting married to someone like Damian is something you will always be grateful for.”
I’m sick and tired of hearing talks like this.
“You sound like you know him so well. But you don’t. Damian is not as good as you think, Mother.”
“Why do you say so, Darling? Is anything wrong? Did you both fight?.”
“I don’t want to talk about it, Mom.”
She sighed. I was prepared for her to push on with a thousand questions but she didn’t.
“Alright Val. Whatever the problem is, I believe it is something you can handle. Marriage comes with a lot of trials. You both must understand each other. Communication is vital in every relationship. Don’t make assumptions, Val. If there is anything you are not sure of, ask your spouse first and get confirmation from him. You know you can talk to me anytime you need me”
If there is anything you are not sure of, ask your spouse first and get confirmation from him. These words kept ringing in my ear.
I have to call Damian and get confirmation from him. I felt a new surge of happiness coursing through me.
“Thanks Mom.”
“Bye, Valerie. Lest I forget, your wedding gown will arrive from Dubai next week. I’m sure you will love it.”
“Okay Mom. Until then. I love you.”
Oh! What will I ever do without my mom? Let me call Damian at once.
I was about to do so, when I heard a knock on the door and I knew it had to be Claire.
“Hey, Mama.” Claire said as she gave me a very tight hug when I opened the door.
“You don’t look so good. But don’t worry, I’m here now.” She completed it with a wink.
“I’m glad you were able to come.”
“Now, don’t keep me waiting. What has been going on in your life? How is it going with Damian? Have your parents considered your plea and cancelled the wedding?” Claire began.
“Too many questions, Claire. Don’t worry. I’ll tell you everything. If they had cancelled the wedding, I wouldn’t be in this condition.”
“Where do I start from? Okay, Damian paid me a visit. Two days ago, actually. He came to tell me that he was willing to start this marriage journey with me.”
“And you believed him?”
I did. Foolishly. Because I am a big fool. I thought to myself.
“Yes, I believed him. As a matter of fact, we made love and it was so magical. It was one of the best feelings. And now I regret it.
“What? How could you allow him to touch you? You don’t even know this guy. Valerie, why?”
“I just wanted to enjoy the moment. I couldn’t resist him. Claire…are you there?”
Claire seemed to be lost in thought. She shuddered slightly when I tapped her knee.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. I was carried away. So why do you regret the activity with him?” Claire pressed on.
“After what happened that night, a lady came to my office yesterday claiming to be Damian’s girlfriend. Damian had a girlfriend and he didn’t even care to tell me! She insulted me, called me a golddigger and all sorts of names. She even threatened me to stay away from Damian.
“You mean Jade threatened you? I can’t believe it.” Claire blurted out.
“Yes, she did. But how did you know her name?”
“Oh…who doesn’t know Damian’s ex-girlfriend? I was surprised she showed up. I think you have to stay away from Damian for now. In order to ensure your own safety.”
“It seems I’m the only one who doesn’t know anything about the man I am getting married to.” I said sadly.
Touching my shoulder, Claire looked into my eyes and invited me to stay at her place.
“But Claire, I wish to discuss things with Damian first. I want to confirm what I just heard. I have been avoiding him since yesterday. I just want to communicate with him.”
“Valerie, there is nothing to communicate. He is a big liar and he wants to play with your heart. Come and stay with me, Valerie. We’ll have so much fun and forget about our problems. I promise you.” Claire concluded.
“Alright, if you insist. I will come with you tomorrow. I’ll be at your place by tomorrow evening.”
“No, that is not going to happen. You are coming with me today. I don’t trust you to stay here all by yourself. You need company. You need me.”
I chuckled. Claire has always been a very sweet girl and I love having her around me. Of course I’m going to her place today. Damian can go to hell for all I care.
“Okay, since you insist. Let me go and freshen up. I’ll pack up a few clothes and join you shortly.” I said as I got up.
I was still holding my phone when I got a text from an unknown number. The text creeped me out as I looked around me. It read:
“Your enemies are within your territory. As a matter of fact, you dine with them. My advice to you, is “Don’t trust anyone”. I have my eyes on you everywhere you go and there is no escape for you.”
