CHAPTER 92
ROBERT’S POV
I stared at my reflection in the mirror as I knotted my tie. I was all dressed up in my CEO attire and ready to leave for work. But I’ll have to make a stop at Jane’s place again before heading to the office.
It’s been three days since I last visited and was told by her husband she left for a trip. Though the news broke my spirit as I looked forward to seeing her, I wasn’t discouraged. It’s been three days already, she should be back from her trip. I just hope she was and will be around by the time I come. That’s why I’m living this early in the morning.
Her husband had wanted to know the reason I came but I didn’t tell him. This was between Jane and I. I wondered if he’d tell Jane I came looking for her. Since I didn’t tell him my reason for visiting, he’d given me this look I didn’t like. It seemed almost as if he was suspecting his wife and I were involved in some kind of extramarital affair. He’d better not think that way because, at this point in my life, I didn’t have an interest in any woman. I was only focused on getting back with Lily and my kids. For us to reunite as a family.
Satisfied with my appearance, I breathed out softly with a dry smile on my face. I grabbed my jacket and work bag and left, not bothering to have breakfast. My mum and Ginny were angry at me for that.
It didn’t take me long to arrive at Jane’s place since it wasn’t so. . Standing in front of the door, I pushed the doorbell twice. When I first came, I didn’t take the surroundings into much consideration as I was in a haste and her husband had answered the door quickly.
The house was a modern two-story structure with beige walls and grey accents. It had a neat lawn, colourful flower beds, and large windows. A cosy porch with chairs and plants sat at the front. The driveway was paved with interlocking stones and led to a spacious double garage.
Overall, the house was perfect for raising a family. I imagined me, Lily and our kids living in a house like this in future with the kids running around with their pet dog or cat on the lawn. Though I hadn’t given it much thought, I don’t think I’ll be comfortable raising my family in the family mansion. All my life I have lived in that mansion. I wanted a house of my own. I’m sure everyone will understand that.
On the third ring, the door was opened by a lady roughly the same age as Lily. Her pixie curls were swept up into a messy bun with some loose hair tendrils trialling down her forehead. She was wearing a somewhat sexy pyjama top and bottoms. She must be Jane. I remember the face.
“Hey,” I said with a nervously polite smile. “You must be Jane. It’s nice meeting you, I’m…”
I brought out my hand for a friendly handshake, but she rolled her eyes, scoffed with disdain, and attempted to slam the door in my face. But my instincts kicked in, and I quickly wedged my foot between the door and the frame, stopping it from closing completely.
“Please Jane, I need to talk to you,” I said in a desperate plea.
I could hear her growl loudly in frustration as she tried to slam the door shut, but my foot proved to be a stubborn obstacle. My expensive Italian designer shoes were taking a beating, and my foot was hurting slightly from the constant pressure. Still, I wasn’t about to back down. I couldn’t let this opportunity slip away so I endured it all. If she continued slamming the door then the hinges might rip apart. I know she won’t want that.
Seeing I wasn’t giving it, she flung the door open. “What do you want, Robert? Haven’t you done enough harm already? You’re not welcome anywhere close to my house or life. So you might as well leave before I call my husband to beat your sorry ass up!”
I wasn’t surprised she knew my name because I knew she remembered me. But what I couldn’t fathom was the look on her face. She glared at me with so much vile expression and disdain like I was her worst enemy. I couldn’t understand what I could have possibly done for her to hate me like that.
“Please Jane I need your help.”
She scoffed in disbelief. “The almighty billionaire CEO is now one to beg for help. What an interestingly unexpected twist.”
I wanted to speak further. I didn’t care if she taunted or looked down on me. The old me would have grown mad but the new me had changed for the better. I’m willing to put up with anything to find Lily and make her mine again.
“Please I need your help in…” I wanted to say when a distant voice probably from upstairs interrupted. It was her husband’s.
“Who is that honey?”
“Just some nobody who lost his way,” she tilted her head in the direction the voice came from. “I’ll be up soon. Tell Christabel I have made breakfast and she should be down here in a heartbeat to take hers.”
She finished and looked back at me with that hard look on her face. “Whatever you have to say you’d better say it fast because I need to go be with my family.”
I sighed sadly. If only she knew that was the same reason I was at her doorstep then she’ll not be this rude and unwelcoming to me.
“Please if there is any chance you know where Lily is I need you to tell me. It’s important that I…”
“Nope,” she cut me off mid-sentence and shook her head. “I don’t where she is.”
But my guts told me otherwise. I could tell she knew something but was trying to hide it
“I know you do,” I said calmly. “You were the only person who visited her while she was in prison and the last person to visit her a few days before she was released. If there is anybody that knows her whereabouts, it’s you, Jane.”
That revelation came as a shock to her because she stared at me with her brows pulled in together and her mouth slightly open.
“So you’ve been spying on me like a freak all this time?” She shot at me.
