CHAPTER 88
LILY’S POV
~ As I looked into his eyes, I could see the heart-rending tenderness and genuineness in his gaze. With a heavy sigh, I wrapped my hands around my elbows and leaned against the wall. Since he said I should trust him, I had no other choice but to do that. After all, he had this uniquely calm way of approaching problems that always seemed to work. For now, I could only rely on that and believe he would bring my kids back to me. ~
Noah turned towards the camera. “I apologize on her behalf, Detective Adams. Please let her stay. I promise it won’t happen again.”
“Very well then,” the speaker sounded. “To ensure it doesn’t happen again, the officer will be present throughout the interrogation. Any act of violence won’t be tolerated. We’ll restart shortly after the suspect’s wounds are attended to.”
Shortly after the detective made that announcement, a short female medic a little younger than me with a calm demeanour came into the room and tended to Cassandra’s wounds.
Cassandra kept her gaze on me throughout the procedure while I occasionally looked away. She still had that stupid smirk and a hateful scowl on her face as she looked at me. I didn’t get why she hated me so much and was putting me through this trauma. Surely, her indefinite suspension from work couldn’t be the only reason. There must be something more that fueled this hatred.
I remember Miley saying she had a huge crush on Noah. Maybe that’s the other reason. Ever since I started working at the company, Noah has spent more time with me than any other person in the company. She must think I was stealing Noah’s attention from her and other women. Think that he had eyes only for me.
I let out a sigh and shook my head. This bitch was worse than Scarlett. Coming to this place, I made it very clear to myself that the last thing I wanted was to fight over a man with another woman like I foolishly did with Scarlett over Robert. I was way past all that now. If someone truly loves you, they’ll make you their priority and choose you above everyone else-no games, no doubts, no excuses.
The damage done to Cassandra’s nose wasn’t so severe it could be considered a critical issue. The medic aligned her nose properly in position with her hand. But not without her screaming her lungs out like a little girl. Once the medic had secured her nose bridge with bandages and medical tape, she left the interrogation room without a word.
We continued with the interrogation. But as the detective permitted, only Noah was allowed to ask the questions.
“Cassandra, it’s in your best interest to cooperate and tell us where the kids are otherwise you’ll only be worsening your situation. You’re already facing charges of attempted murder, accessory to murder, kidnapping, child abuse, and potentially child endangerment. If you withhold information, you’ll also be charged with obstruction of justice. With all the charges combined, you could be facing a possible life imprisonment or even get the death penalty…”
“Shut up!” Cassandra snapped at him. “Just shut the fuck up!! I hate the sound of your voice. You think I care about all that?…” She asked, looking at him with a murderous glare.
Noah stared at her in shock, a deep frown settling on his face, contorting his features. Even the officer in the room was startled.
“All of this is happening because of you!” She accused, barking at him. “It’s all your fault. If you hadn’t brought her into the company and given her that promotion that was meant for me then I won’t be this wicked. None of this would have happened. I mean you don’t even look at me. I have been working in that company since its inception yet you never spared me a glance despite all the hard work I put in to look beautiful for you. You think it’s easy?…”
Her tone fell as sharply as it rose. She bowed her head in despair, her voice thick with emotion like she was suddenly on the brink of tears. It maddened me to know that she wanted to cry after acting like a demonic spirit and lunatic just a while ago.
“Because of you I spent my entire life saving to get these implants that are killing me from a doctor I didn’t know was a quack. I was diagnosed with breast cancer because of them and due for surgery next week…” she sobbed bitterly.
My lips fell open. I couldn’t believe my ears. That explained the reason for her unusually large and swollen breasts. I had suspected it at first but didn’t put much thought into it. Now that she admitted it, I was right about her indefinite suspension from work not being the only reason she hated me and was doing this to me.
She looked away and squeezed her eyes shut in a painful regret. “I can’t believe I put my life at risk to impress a man who never even cared if I existed. Because of you Noah, I’ll be getting my breasts cut off next week.”
Suddenly, she looked at me, her tearful expression suddenly switching back to the gruesome scowl. “She came along and all of sudden you were all over her like a fly to a pile of sheet. You’re always with her, helping her, saving her, favouring her, spending time with her and her stupid kids. You didn’t even care if other women existed. Your world literally revolved around her. And because of that, I’m going to take away everything from her. I’m going to tear you two apart because if I can’t have you then no other woman can!”
A collective gasp filled the room. Noah’s brows knitted tightly together as he stared at her like she was out of her mind. He glanced at me, his confusion mirroring my own. This was as hard for me to process as it was for him. When was the last time Cassandra went to therapy? Because after seeing all this behaviour she’s displaying, I strongly believe she needed one. Her emotions were dangerous and unstable.
“Lily or whatever you’re called,” she called for my attention. “I’ll tell you where your kids are only on one condition: that after you find them, you’ll leave to wherever it is you came from and never come back to this city.”
