CHAPTER 87
LILY’S POV
~ She started laughing like a psycho, her voice like fingernails clawing on a chalkboard. “They’re safely locked away in a dark, empty basement where you’ll never find them. I must say they’re adorable little pies, but their endless whining and crying for their mummy nearly drove me insane. I can’t imagine the number of times I was this close to ending their miserable lives. But I can’t do that, no, no, no, not without you watching. Once my attorney gets me out of this shit hole, I’ll take you with me. And then, I’ll make you watch as I take away those precious things in your life, just like you took away mine.” ~
My eyes widened in horrific shock as I stared at Cassandra, a cold shiver of fear running down my spine. With her sickening laughter and the blood trickling down her nose and into her mouth, colouring her teeth, she was like a demonic spirit that fed on chaos and misery.
If she had my kids locked away in a basement that meant they were alone, scared and hungry in the dark with no one watching over them. I have wasted too much time already. They’ll feel that all hope is lost. That I won’t be coming for them. I can’t imagine the look on their faces now, especially with how she had threatened them. They’re just kids and kids don’t respond well to cold threats from adults.
My temper flared, pumping like wildfire through my veins. My thoughts raced dangerously, clouded by an unsurmountable rage. I couldn’t think straight. I tried to hold back the tears building up at the back of my eyes as I grabbed Cassandra by the back of her neck.
“Listen to me,” I seethed. “If you don’t tell me where my kids are now, I swear I’ll rip out your guts and make you watch as I feed them to you…”
She started laughing like a psycho again, her cackle echoing like a haunting melody of madness in the room.
“Attention, detectives and officers of the station!” she said as if making an announcement. “Hope you’re seeing this? Hope you heard her threats. If anything happens to me, make sure to hold this crazy bitch responsible!”
Her attitude drove me to the brink of madness. It’s obvious she wasn’t going to comply and give me the answers I needed. Growling loudly in frustration, I unleashed all that pent-up anger and slammed her face against the table. I heard a snap probably from the bones of her nose breaking.
Pulling her face back up, I could see her the bridge of her nose had bent out of shape in an awkward position. Her cuffed hands flew up her face to cradle it, the blood rushing out from her nose and staining her hands. I derived so much joy in inflicting pain on her and seeing her bleed. But I wasn’t done yet. After I’m finished with her, she’ll beg me for her life and reveal the location of my kids whether or not she likes it. I wanted to slam her face against the table again when Noah stopped me.
“Stop this Lily…” He said with a gentle yet disapproving look on his face but it had little effect on me.
I wanted to tear off his hold on my wrist when the door flew open and an officer rushed in.
“Step away from the suspect, Miss Jones,” the officer said with his hand on the handle of his gun which was safely tucked in a holster on the side of his pants. “We can’t condone this act of violence.”
The officer was staring at me like I was a wild animal, his hand still on his gun as if to pull it out and shoot. I looked at Cassandra. Even in her pitiable state, she was smirking triumphantly. What a freak.
I glared at her before letting go of my grip on the back of her neck. Reluctantly, I stepped away from her like the officer said I should. I settled behind Noah who didn’t seem so happy because of the way I acted. I didn’t like that they were making it look like I was the bad guy. The only bad person here was Cassandra. I was only doing what was necessary. Doing what every mother in my shoes would do.
A voice sounded in the room from a speaker I couldn’t see. It was the detective’s.
“Miss Jones, we understand you’re frustrated and desperate to find your children. But this kind of behaviour won’t help the case. Her attorney is on the way, and any unnecessary violence could jeopardize the investigation. If you’re unable to maintain control, I strongly recommend you step out of the interrogation room and allow Mr. Hills to take over. Rest assured, we’ll keep you updated on every step of our progress.”
The detective’s words did nothing but irritate and increase my annoyance. He and the other officers don’t understand the severity of this situation like I do. The more time we waste the more danger Liam and Lila will face. I remember the head officer from the park yesterday telling me they couldn’t do anything to help me till after forty-eight hours. The police have always been slow in their operations. If I rely entirely on them, my kids might end up dying on me. I can’t let that happen! I can’t be the one to bury my kids. It has to be the other way around. So it’s in our best interest to act quickly and utilize whatever means necessary to make this bitch talk.
I wanted to talk back to the detective but Noah stopped me again.
“Don’t…” he murmured, his voice low enough for only me to hear as he shook his head. “Let me handle this. We’ll find your kids. Trust me.”
As I looked into his eyes, I could see the heart-rending tenderness and genuineness in his gaze. With a heavy sigh, I wrapped my hands around my elbows and leaned against the wall. Since he said I should trust him, I had no other choice but to do that. After all, he had this uniquely calm way of approaching problems that always seemed to work. For now, I could only rely on that and believe he would bring my kids back to me.
