CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO

He scans the area around him and looks confused, but I’m sure that’s totally normal. It also took me a minute to recognize where I was when I woke up after Beau had saved me.
“Where am I?” He rasps out.
“You’re in the hospital; Harvey found you.” I sit on the bed and try to take his hand, but he pulls away. I stare at him, confused.
Beau looks around the room nervously before turning back to me. “Who are you?”
“My love, it’s me.”
“You?” He looks at me expectantly, like he’s waiting for me to explain further.
“Delilah…it’s Delilah,” I say. What is going on?
“Sorry, do I know you?”
“You don’t know who I am?” I ask, wide-eyed. He shakes his head. My hand moves to my mouth as it hangs open. “Oh my God…” I breathe out.
“Beau, honey, do you recognize me?” Jenny asks, pushing me out of the way.
He looks at her. “No, I don’t. Is Beau my name?”
“Bro, if this is some kind of joke you’re playing, you better stop it. It’s not funny,” Harvey says.
“I’m not playing games,” Beau replies, looking around at all of us. “I don’t know who any of you are.”
“I’m going to get the doctor. Something is wrong,” Yennefer says, walking out of the room.
***
My leg taps vigorously as we sit in the doctor’s office. Jenny, Harvey, Yennefer, and I are waiting for him while he examines Beau. The scene from moments ago is still replaying in my head. I’m praying the doctor won’t say what we’re all suspecting. I don’t know how I’ll bear that kind of news after everything that’s happened between Beau and I. It would be too much. There has to be a logical explanation as to why Beau doesn’t know who I am-besides the most obvious reason.
My head turns toward the door as it opens. I follow the doctor with my eyes as he walks and takes the seat across from us, releasing a deep sigh. My stomach twists at the confirmation of my suspicion. Beau has lost his memory.
“I know everyone is wondering why Mr. Williams doesn’t seem to recognize any of you. That is due to his mind’s reaction to the general anesthesia we used while treating him. Unfortunately, Mr. Williams has lost his memory.”
“Oh my God, this can’t be happening,” I whisper. Will our problems ever end?
“How much of his memory did he lose?” Jenny asks.
“Mr. Williams doesn’t even know his name, so I would say all of it.”
My heart squeezes in my chest. I can’t believe this is happening. What does this mean for Beau and me? And why am I even asking myself that question? I just broke up with him a week ago. I shouldn’t be worried about the fact that he has forgotten me. If anything, I should be glad…but I can’t be. The reason his memory is gone is tied to me, and I can’t find any happiness in it.
“Is there anything we can do to help him recover his memory?” I ask.
“Nothing in particular, but I advise you to take it slow with him. His brain has suffered a lot of trauma. I strongly recommend you don’t try to force him to remember anything. It might only make things worse if you do.”
“Of course, doctor, we won’t.” Jenny looks at me as she speaks to the doctor. She doesn’t seem as worried as I am about Beau losing his memories. If I didn’t know any better, I would even say she’s happy about it.
