Sophie’s POV
“You really are something else, aren’t you?” I asked Riff seriously.
“Yes, I am your mate,” he answered simply, making me laugh softly.
“I didn’t mean that; I meant how stubborn you are,” I pointed out.
No matter what I said or how I reacted, he was right there by my side, acting like he wasn’t phased.
He even went as far as to lend me a hand with the office files whenever I was tired or in a bad mood.
The most shocking part was when he helped me with the clients who were very hard to please.
He stepped in and talked to them in a way that made them happy. I was supposed to hate him for interfering with my work, but my wolf and I were so happy, and we began to always look forward to having him by our side.
He walked to my seat behind the desk and grabbed the chair, trapping me between his arms.
“Do you hate it?” he asked when he looked me in the eyes.
I was about to shift my gaze down when he let out a low growl that made me stay still.
“Do you?” he asked huskily as my heart began to beat rapidly.
“No,” I answered in a low tone that came out more as a whisper. He smirked and then leaned in.
I closed my eyes, only to open them when I heard a loud knock on the door.
I pressed my hands to his chest, and I was about to push him back when he moved his hand, grabbing my cheek with a smirk.
“No,” he whispered and then leaned in, kissing my lips.
Every thought of responding to the knock on the door vanished as I kissed him back.
“Miss, are you in?” a female voice asked loudly at the door.
I unconsciously let out a loud moan when his tongue dominated mine.
“Oh my goodness, are you sick?” the female voice asked as the door opened.
She gasped as I quickly pulled back and looked at her coldly.
She immediately lowered her eyes.
I knew her very well because she was one of the trusted employees who worked hard in our company.
“You again,” I said softly when Riff pulled back and stood beside me with his arms folded.
Even without words, I could tell how unhappy he was to be disturbed.
“I apologize; it’s just that one of the cleaners had an accident in the storeroom,” she said as I rolled my eyes and then pointed at the company phone on my desk.
“Is that a decoration to you?” I asked seriously.
“No, I apologize,” she answered in a respectful tone.
“I’ll be right there, so next time, knock,” I said seriously.
“Yes,” she answered and then quickly left.
“Won’t you warn her and ask her to keep her mouth shut about what she witnessed?” he asked.
I looked at him and sighed heavily.
“Why would I do that?” I asked softly.
“She looks like the type of woman who can’t keep her mouth shut. I bet she will tell everyone how she found us making out,” he answered.
He was right; she was talkative, and she was usually found in groups that talked and admired Alpha Glen.
But then, if she spread the news about what she saw, it would be to my advantage because I noticed how the women looked at my mate.
They were giving him disgusting looks and greeting him as if they were about to orgasm! That shit pissed the living hell out of me, even when I didn’t want it to.
Them knowing who he belonged to was exactly what I wanted to keep them off of him.
“What’s with that wicked smile?” he asked as I quickly moved my hands to my face in surprise.
I had no idea I was smiling.
“Don’t tell me, did you want her to find us kissing?” he asked loudly.
“No, I had no idea you were going to kiss me,” I answered seriously.
It was a beautiful coincidence.
“But you look way too happy for someone who should be worrying about rumors,” he said as I stood up from my seat.
“I don’t care if she tells everyone about us; after all, you are my mate,” I answered as he smirked happily.
“How about you replace the mate part with man?” he asked in a teasing tone.
“Well… you are my man,” I answered as he moved closer and placed his hands on my ass.
“You sound so hot right now,” he said softly as I smiled.
When he dropped his hands with a sad expression on his face, I moved my hand to his shoulder.
“What’s wrong?” I asked with concern.
“I will have to go back to the pack soon,” he answered as I dropped my hand with an aching heart.
I knew he wasn’t going to stay here forever, yet I dared to want that.
“How soon are we talking about?” I asked seriously.
“I’m leaving tomorrow,” he answered, and my wolf growled furiously.
“Why tomorrow? Why not next week or next month?” I exclaimed.
“Prolonging the inevitable is seriously a dumb move. I have to return to my Alpha’s side, whether I want to or not. My purpose is to serve and stand by his side,” he answered.
I turned furiously and closed my eyes.
I wanted to yell at him and ask him, what about me, his mate? What about us?
“I will be visiting you whenever I am free,” he said as I opened my eyes.
“Oh really, what exactly will I be? Your long-distance fling?” I asked, then gasped when I was grabbed by the hand and turned roughly.
“Never should you ever call yourself that,” he said as his eyes changed to those of his wolf.
“You may take being mates lightly, but we don’t. To us, you are our lover, friend, and partner. The one whom we love, cherish, and want to be with no matter the circumstance,” he said in a strong voice.
I wanted to act tough, but his words affected me badly.
“Then what about me? Don’t you have an obligation to me, your mate?” I asked in a low tone.
His eyes turned back to their usual color.
He took my hands in his and smiled.
“I do, that’s why I would have loved it if you chose to come with us,” he answered softly.
“I can’t,” I said, then pulled back my hands.
As much as he wanted to serve his Alpha, that was what I too wanted.
Now that he was away from the company, it was my responsibility to handle everything on his behalf.
“I see,” he whispered in a pained tone.
“Tomorrow I’ll leave very early; I won’t come to your office. And as I said, I will always visit you whenever I am free,” he said, then smiled.
“I guess this is where we say goodbye,” he said, leaning in to kiss my cheek as tears filled my eyes.
He pulled back and walked to the door as my heart ached badly.
When he grabbed the door handle, I found myself running to his side and grabbing his arm.
“I am going with you,” I said seriously.
He looked at me with a shocked expression.
“But you will have to give me a week to prepare everything. I’ll have to make a call and let Alpha Glen know about this decision. Hopefully, he will convince the former CEO (Berta) to take over again or find someone who can replace me,” I said, startled when he pulled me to him, wrapping his arms around me.
“You don’t know what this means to me,” he whispered as I hugged him back with a smile, resting my head against his chest.
