Riff’s POV
I grabbed a book from a shelf and deliberately dropped it to get my mate’s attention, yet she still wasn’t giving me any.
When she drove me to the company, I thought it was because she had something important she wanted to do.
I was shocked when she took me to a private room that I was going to be staying in for the time that I was around.
The room was very impressive because it was a suite but also very lonely.
That’s why I made a plan and decided to be with my mate in her office as she worked.
Wherever she went, I followed her and spent hours trying to get her attention. Sadly, it was all in vain.
“Are you going to pick that up or what?” she asked while typing on her laptop.
“Are you going to make me?” I asked simply.
“No, so carry on and throw away more books if you want,” she answered simply.
That was exactly my problem! Her lack of care or attraction towards me was evident. She was treating me like a damn wall, and it was very unpleasant for me.
What was I to do to get her attention? Throwing things only encouraged her to provoke me more.
Kissing or touching her without permission only pissed her off or made her walk away. Talking to her made her unresponsive most of the time, and walking around made her pay even less attention to me.
This was the first time I felt this desperate and frustrated over a she-wolf.
Yes, back in the pack, I paid less attention to most she-wolves who tried to get my attention. But there were a few who managed to get to me.
I talked to them and messed around with them a few times, but that was it. We later had no attachment or commitment in any way.
No matter what they did to get me to like them, I never did. I actually hated the feeling of being tied down.
But now I kind of felt how they felt back then because I was going through the same situation as they did.
I grabbed another book, and I was about to drop it when my wolf took over.
“You know, we didn’t come here to experience the human way of living. We came here for you,” he said softly, then put the book back carefully in its place.
“Back in the pack, when you left, we felt so lonely and incomplete,” he said, and then turned to look at her.
She was no longer typing, and surprisingly, she was looking at us seriously.
“We are not asking you to love and devote your entire being to us. We are just asking you to give us a little of your time and look at us, even if it is out of pretense,” he said seriously.
When she sighed heavily and closed her laptop, my wolf pulled back and gave me back control.
“Look, it’s not that I don’t want to give you my attention or time. It’s just that I have a lot of work,” she answered softly.
“Ever since my parents disowned me for refusing to follow their chosen path, I have struggled a lot to find a job,” she said seriously.
“I was so young back then, and I had no experience,” she said in a sad tone.
“When I met Alpha Glen, I saw him as everyone judges him: prideful and weak. But then that same supposed prideful and weak Alpha showed me mercy that no one ever did,” she said, and then stood up.
“He hired me in his mother’s company and helped me learn and improve my skills. Even when he took over this company, he still didn’t treat me any differently than he did back then,” she said.
She sounded like someone who had feelings for him, and I didn’t like it.
“I am what I am today because Glen saw that greatness in me before I could even see it in myself. So please pardon me when I work as though you aren’t here,” she said, and then approached me.
“I just never want to disappoint him in any way. I am so grateful that I try my very best to live up to his expectations and to help him in any way that I can,” she said as she stood in front of me.
“Are your feelings for him purely that of gratitude, or do you have intimate feelings for him?” I asked seriously.
She sighed heavily and then moved her arms around my shoulders, surprising me.
“He is my Alpha and the leader I choose to serve. But just because I show him much respect, it doesn’t mean I want to fuck him in any way,” she answered bluntly as I tried hard not to smile.
“I look at Alpha Glen as I would an older brother. There is nothing between us, and there will never be,” she said softly.
“Then what about me? How do you look at me?” I asked seriously.
I still wanted to know how she truly thought about me.
“You, my mate, are something else,” she answered and then dropped her hands.
She was about to step back when I grabbed her by the waist.
“Please,” I whispered.
“You bother me a lot, Riff,” she said seriously.
“Oh,” I whispered, letting go of her.
“Not in a bad way, but in a hard, different, good way,” she added, making me frown.
What exactly was she trying to say?
She walked to her desk and opened her laptop. When she turned it toward me, I was shocked.
It only had two sentences typed on it, despite us being in the office for more than an hour.
“I tried to type something, but I could only come up with two sentences. You’re a distraction to me, and I hate it, but at the same time, I love it,” she admitted.
“What I’m feeling is a first for me, so I don’t know how to react. When you’re around, all I can think about is how good you look… or what your body might look like under your clothes,” she said, her voice rising.
“And when you’re not around, I miss you and wonder what you’re doing or who you might be talking to,” she added, her confession making me smile.
I couldn’t hold back the emotions surging inside me.
“It’s scary and confusing because I’ve never let anything or anyone distract me from work. Even when I’m sick, I always manage to work,” she finished in a low tone.
“So why can’t I work when I’m thinking about you?” she asked.
I wanted to kiss her, but I didn’t want to risk upsetting her. Instead, I stepped closer and wrapped my arms around her, letting out a heavy sigh.
“What are you doing?” she asked in a whiny tone.
“Holding my mate because I feel very happy,” I answered and then closed my eyes.
She wasn’t in love with me, that I knew. But her acknowledging my full presence meant there was some progress in our relationship, and that made me so happy.
