Sky’s POV
“Why did you and Berta abandon me?” I asked seriously.
She looked at me in silence and then frowned.
“I wrecked my brain thinking about whether you loved me or not. Maybe you were forced to submit by Dad,” I said sadly.
“Alpha Clyde and his wolf were always amazing leaders and mates to us,” she answered, surprising me.
“Really?” I asked seriously.
“When Berta and I found out that the Alpha we had always liked was our mate, we were over the moon and couldn’t wait to stand by his side because, to us, it was like a miracle given by the moon goddess. Status meant nothing to us because even if he wasn’t an Alpha, we would still have chosen to stand by his side,” she said and then smiled.
“He truly was an excellent mate who showered us with praise and respected us. The only flaw he had was that he wanted perfection, be it in how he acted or carried himself. So imagine the shock he had when we gave birth to twins and one of them turned out to be a very weak pup,” she said as looked at Glen.
“His own bloodline, which had never produced such a weakling before, did so for the first time. To him, Glen was like an imperfection and a tainted spot on a clean white cut cloth. He hated him so much from the word go,” she said as Glen looked at me murderously.
“He not only chose to never speak a word to him, but he also never cared to even look at him. Berta and I did love our pup, and we treated both of you as the most priceless things we could ever have,” she said seriously.
“When you both were a few months old, the words of pack members and laughter towards how your father acted began to irritate him. It was so irritating that he reached a point of wanting to banish his own pup,” she said.
“What?” I asked in disbelief.
I knew my father well, and hearing her side of the story was shocking and very hard to believe.
“Oh yes, he even asked us to pick a side and an option: to either do it together or to act blind when he did it. A few of the elders knew about it, and as absurd as it was, no one tried to intervene; only the Beta did, and it didn’t go well for him,” she said as Glen stood up furiously.
“So you choose me,” he whispered.
“Any mother in her right mind would,” she answered softly.
“We began planning our escape because we realized how he really meant every word. To him, Sky was the only perfect pup who was meant to be with us and the sole heir to the pack, and that hurt both me and Berta,” she said.
“We kept telling him how he had to kill us too if he wanted to kill him. But we still couldn’t fight back because he was still an Alpha who could easily force us into submission and do something against our will. After all, we are just Gammas,” she said.
“You were still a Luna, mother,” I pointed out.
“Yes, a Luna who stood alone against a leader whom everyone worshiped and looked up to. Our word against his was nothing, as was our strength and influence. That’s why we had to involve our sister, who was mated to another Alpha with a territory close to the humans,” she answered.
“Mother,” Jace whispered softly.
“We talked on the phone and wrote to each other in secret about everything. Luckily, her mate was kind enough to involve himself in our matter. He arranged a place for us to stay in human territory and assigned one of his Deltas to serve us,” she said, then continued.
“Besides that, he gave me a cheque worth a million dollars to start my very own business. In exchange, I was asked not to contact them for a few years because he feared how war would break out if Clyde realized he had a hand in our escape. He may not have wanted Glen, but he did want us,” she said as Glen sat down furiously.
“That’s how we came here and soon established a place for ourselves. It wasn’t simple raising a pup in a strange land with strange beings who understood nothing about our kind. That’s why I had to be so strict with Glen,” she said as her voice broke.
“We had to leave you behind in order to save your brother. We knew how much he loved you and how he could never hurt you, no matter what. You were in good hands; that’s what mattered to us. For the few years I was in complete control, Berta cried for you, Sky, and usually wanted to go back, even if it meant our death,” she said as tears filled my eyes.
“I stopped her because Glen was still a pup, incapable of survival in this land, and as the years went on, our sister would tell lies to both Clyde and her own pack members to protect us,” she said as Jace brushed his hand through his hair.
“I now understand why my mother said you came here while you were pregnant. She never wanted me to know that Glen had a twin brother,” he said softly.
“Why did you never come back when Glen was old enough to be on his own?” I asked with blurred vision.
“Because we had no idea how your father still felt about us. What if he wanted us dead? What if we were to go through a punishment of hell for our decision? Yes, we were scared of dying because we still wanted to live,” she answered as tears ran down my cheeks.
“So if I hadn’t found out that you were still alive, you wouldn’t have come back or met me?” I said bitterly.
“I apologize, but yes, I wouldn’t have allowed Berta to meet you or go back,” she answered.
“So, in short, you cared less even if I would have died from sickness or something?” I asked.
“Son, I knew and believed with all my heart that you would find us or the truth. I waited for you to find us, and now you are right in front of us,” she said as I stood up furiously.
“You don’t hear the point, mother, do you? I longed for you and wished you were alive! I cried myself to sleep whenever I was unwell and father was busy with pack work. I taught myself things that you should have taught me!” I yelled.
“And I am proud that you did because it made you the leader and warrior that you are today. If we were to go back in time, we would do it all over again if it meant having you both alive!” she answered at the top of her voice as tears filled her eyes.
“We are so sorry for leaving you behind, and we are so sorry for never coming back. But if we had taken you with us, your father would have stopped at nothing to find us. You staying behind was his assurance that we were going to return in no time. Yes, I was a coward, and I still am, but we did what we did because that was the only way we thought of surviving,” she said, then wiped off the tears that rolled down her cheeks.
“Your words aren’t comforting to me; they hurt like fucking hell, mother,” I whispered, then wiped off my tears that wouldn’t stop falling.
“Sky, look at your brother; just for once, think about him too,” she said as I did.
Glen had his face down and was sobbing silently.
“Glen,” I called softly.
“I feel like dying, so much. I don’t want to live,” he whispered, then stood up and walked out of the room without a word.
He was hurting a lot more than I was. I could sense it.
After all, he wasn’t only wanted dead by our father, but he was treated with hate even when he met him again.
What he needed was comfort and a shoulder to cry on, and that wasn’t mine or our mother’s.
I looked at Harley, who was looking at me with teary eyes.
“Go after him,” I said huskily, knowing it was only her who could comfort him.
She quickly stood up and ran out, leaving us all in silence.
