Glen’s POV
Warm and comfortable was what I was feeling, and the amazing tingles that I was experiencing made me feel so at ease and at peace.
When was the last time I had experienced such a feeling? It was in the past when my mother used to tuck me in bed, read me a good story, and then kiss me goodnight. That fulfilled my whole day and gave me hope to face tomorrow with a smile.
For the past few days, I have been going through a lot of stress, anger, and panic. That was the side of me that I hated and hid from everyone because I was afraid of what they might think of me.
My mother was of Alpha blood and a very wise businesswoman. All businessmen admired her greatly, and most companies fought to work with us before she retired. The image she invested in was what I was meant to continue. Living my own life felt useless because all I cared about was maintaining whatever things and image she started with. That’s why I cared a lot about how I looked and what I did.
My greatest fear was, and will forever be, disappointing her.
A hand in my hair made me tense. I knew who it was because of the nice scent I was now becoming familiar with.
I kept quiet, my eyes still shut, pretending to be asleep as she brushed my hair. When she began humming a beautiful song, I instantly relaxed and smiled.
What was she really doing to me? Never had I ever rested on a woman’s lap or even let one touch my hair in such a way. The ones I had slept with were strictly about lust and nothing beyond that. There was no cuddling in bed, gentle kisses, hugs, or pillow talk. Once we were done, you were either to leave, or I would, and they all understood that. I never dated and could never commit to any of them unless they could benefit me in a very significant way. Never was I in love, and never will I be. That had been my decision for a very long time, but ever since meeting her, I began to think a little differently, and I hated that.
She was like a fresh breeze that was washing away all of my burdens. If she were human, I could have tolerated her, but sadly she wasn’t.
I had no idea what she was, but one thing I was certain about was that whatever she was, she was strong enough to make Dominic acknowledge her presence and begin to think of her in a different light.
When she stopped humming and yawned, I opened my eyes and turned to look at her.
She quickly widened her eyes and dropped her hand from my hair. She looked tired, yet she stood by my side. Why was that?
“What are you doing to me?” I asked softly.
She frowned and then looked at her hand.
“I was patting your head. Was it uncomfortable?” she asked seriously.
“Forget it,” I answered, then sat upright.
“Glen, I think you should rest more,” she said as I looked at her in disbelief.
“Did you just call me by my fucking name?” I asked seriously.
She lowered her gaze and then quickly stood up. My hands were aching to pull her back to her previous spot and just hold her down.
“I’m sorry, I made a mistake,” she whispered.
I brushed my hand through my hair and then stood up as well.
“Please see yourself out,” I said seriously.
She glanced at the door and then at me.
“No, Miss Sophie ordered me to clean your office,” she answered.
“Sophie works for me just like the rest of you. That means my orders are above all of you, so my order to you right now is to leave my office,” I said as she put her hands together.
“Also, call for that other cleaner you usually hang around with. I need to have a word with her,” I said, then walked to my desk and sat down. I was about to turn on my laptop when I heard her sneer and then curse.
“No,” she answered strongly, surprising me.
“What did you just say?” I asked calmly.
“I said no, as in I won’t do what you said,” she answered.
I slowly stood up in shock, looking at her angrily.
“I don’t know what it is, but there should be a reason why you treat me this way. I have been observing you for a while now, and you are not like that with others. Yes, you are usually serious, but you don’t treat them as if they are invisible. On the other hand, you try so hard to ignore me, as if I am invisible. But then you turn around and tell me how amazing my scent is. Why is that?” she asked seriously as I stood in front of her, gazing into her eyes.
“Because you are the most unappealing woman I have ever seen. You aren’t just naive and stupid, but also very loud and lazy. So yes, I am bothered by your very existence, and I try so hard to ignore you,” I answered seriously.
When tears filled her eyes, I swallowed hard and tried not to show how guilty I was beginning to feel for saying such harsh words.
“Your existence bothers me too, Glen. I have never looked at men in any funny way or had any interest in them. I don’t think about them or admire their looks as much. So why is it that I find myself attracted to you, who is so cold and usually hurts me with words constantly? Whenever you walk in, I pray you look my way, and I find you so attractive that I can’t stop myself from admiring you. I am turning into something I don’t even know!” she yelled as tears ran down her cheeks.
“I hate to say this to you, but I am attracted to you too, and your touch is so warm and calming. Your very existence fills me with questionable doubts because it’s the first time I am feeling like this, and it’s so fucking scary. I have been with a lot of beautiful women who are ten times sexier than you, but none of them have what you have. It’s unexplainable, but it’s more like you are everything I never thought I needed until now. I find myself thinking about you all the time, and I want to hold your hand and make you smile. Seeing your sad expression makes me sad as well, and I want you to always be happy and to only belong to me,” I said silently in my mind, then sighed loudly.
“Say something,” she whispered when a few minutes went by.
Dominic was silent too because we both knew that if I opened my mouth, the wrong words were going to come pouring out. We were so happy to know that we were the first ones to make her feel that way.
“I see, I really do get it now, sir. As of today, you will never see me near you. I will make sure that I stay hidden from your eyes,” she said softly and then turned and walked away.
I weakly knelt down and covered my face with my hands.
“What am I doing?” I asked myself sadly.
I was always rude to her and made sure to hurt her with my words as a way to keep her away from me. Every time she answered me back or kept quiet whenever I was standing in front of her, I could mostly tell how much she admired me.
But this time it was different; I could see the pain in her eyes and hear the sadness in her voice. She meant each and every word she had spoken, and now she was going to treat me as invisibly as I did.
“It’s for the better,” Dominic whispered.
“Yes, you are right; she is just a cleaner after all. No matter what, we can never be together,” I answered and then slowly stood up and forced myself to my desk.
I was about to sit down when Sophie walked in with a smile on her face.
Her smile vanished when she saw the scowl on my face.
“Don’t tell me, did she fail to clean your office?” she asked seriously.
“Sophie, did you send my mate here when I clearly asked you to get rid of her?” I asked angrily.
“Sir, mates or not, she is still a reliable worker,” she answered in a low tone.
“So is that your reason for disobeying me?” I asked.
“No, to be honest, Alpha, I just thought she would help you in some way because lately you’ve been looking so stressed and upset,” she answered as Dominic pulled through and growled at her.
She quickly lowered her gaze to the ground as she trembled in fear. This was the first time we were so upset with her.
“The next time you ignore my words or orders, I will kick you out of this company,” I warned.
She quickly nodded and then took a few steps back.
“I understand,” she whispered.
“Good, now leave,” I ordered.
“Yes, Alpha,” she answered and then went out.
