Lillian’s POV
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Flora asked softly.
I looked at her and then smiled sadly.
“Nothing is wrong,” I answered and then looked at the door nervously.
A few hours had gone by since Flora came into my room looking very happy.
She embraced me while telling me how thankful she was to be chosen to serve me in the pack house. At first, I wanted to tell her how it was the Alpha’s decision, but stopped when I thought of her leaving and refusing to stay in fear.
I didn’t know what he was planning on doing or what he wanted from me, but I’m sure it wasn’t that good since there was never a day he was kind to me. That’s why I needed Flora on my side, that way if something bad was to happen, I would run to her side.
“Flora,” I called as I stood in fear with a rapidly beating heart. I could smell the scent of Jace getting stronger and light footsteps approaching my room.
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to him,” she answered and then walked to the door and opened it.
“Thank you,” I whispered softly as an aroma of food reached my nose. My mouth watered as I swallowed hard.
Flora was supposed to go and prepare something, but I stopped her. I had this feeling that either Jace would come to his senses and send me out, or Leah would do something bad to me. That’s why I didn’t want to be all alone.
“Hey Flora,” he greeted when he stood in front of her with a tray of food.
He looked at me, taking advantage of his height against Flora, who was short, then smiled.
I quickly shifted my gaze to the side, not wanting to look at him.
He sighed heavily and then cleared his throat.
“Step aside, Flora,” he said seriously as I quickly looked at him coldly.
“Alpha…,” Flora began to speak.
“Please,” he whispered, surprising both of us.
Flora silently stepped aside, allowing him to move forward and approach me.
I quickly took a step back, which made him halt his movements.
“I see, I must have scared you a few seconds ago. I’m sorry. When I asked the omegas in charge of supper if they had served you your share, they said no. So I asked them to prepare our food,” he said. I frowned, wondering if he wanted us to eat together.
If that was the case, then he was insane because there was no way I was going to agree, even if it meant him hitting me.
“He wouldn’t dare,” Maila assured me silently.
“I know how uncomfortable it would be for you to share a meal with me. That’s why I decided to eat my share downstairs and bring you yours in your room. If you want, you can share it with Flora,” he said as I looked at him from head to toe.
“I’m not stupid,” I muttered as he glanced at Flora for a second and then at me.
“What?” He asked in a whisper.
“Is the food poisoned?” I asked seriously.
“Excuse me?” He asked back in what sounded like disbelief.
“Did you tell them to add Otis in the meal?” I asked loudly, and for a second, I saw anger in his eyes.
“Do you truly think I would be that messed up as to poison you, my mate? Fine, in the past, I would have acted as if I cared less even if the food was poisoned, but now everything is different. I can’t hurt or harm you in any way. Ever since I saw your lifeless body…,” he yelled, then stopped speaking out of nowhere and swallowed hard as tears filled his eyes.
“I vowed to treat you right. I know it’s too late to ask you for mercy or forgiveness, but that doesn’t mean I won’t do everything in my power to see you happy. You don’t want to talk to me or look at me, I get it. But I don’t want you to starve yourself,” he said in a husky voice.
“If I wanted you dead, I wouldn’t even be here to look at you,” he whispered sadly and then went down to his knees and put the tray on the floor.
He picked up the fork from the side and began eating the top of the food as tears rolled down his cheeks. My heart felt heavy, and it ached badly seeing him in tears. I was struggling to stay put because I was dying to go to his side and comfort him.
I wanted to move when Flora beat me to it. She knelt down beside him and touched his hand, stopping him from putting the food in his mouth again.
“Alpha, please stop,” she pleaded.
“No, I still have to taste the steak and drink a mouthful of water to prove that the food isn’t poisoned in any way,” he spoke in a cracked voice.
“Alpha, please, she believes you, right Luna?” Flora asked loudly.
“Don’t answer,” Maila commanded.
“I’ll eat, now that I have seen it’s not poisoned,” I answered, ignoring her.
“Ah, I’m glad,” he said softly, then wiped off his tears with a smile.
“Why are you treating him kindly and accepting the food?” Maila asked angrily.
“Because I’m starving and we need to eat something,” I answered seriously.
“I know you are lying,” she said as I walked to where he was and sat on the ground opposite him and next to Flora.
“It smells amazing,” I said in a low voice, hoping it would cheer him up.
“You should eat as much as you want,” he answered while he handed me the fork.
As I took the fork of food to my mouth, my cheeks heated up.
Not only was he looking at me attentively with concern, sharing the same fork was like an indirect kiss.
Just that thought made me look at his lips for a second before I averted my eyes to the tray of food.
What would it feel like to be kissed by him?
I was very curious to know because I had heard how a kiss felt amazing and heavenly.
“Flora, you can join her,” he said as Flora quickly shook her head to refuse.
“How can I, a lowly…,”
“Flora, please do,” I said seriously.
She smiled and then happily nodded.
“Um… you can leave too, Alpha,” I said, hoping he wouldn’t get upset.
“Why am I bothering you?” he asked.
“Damn right he is,” Maila answered.
“No, not at all,” I answered, then cursed at myself for not telling the truth.
