Maila’s POV
“Lillian,” he called as I glared at him.
“Do you think that will make us happy? Your little act of defending us? And I am not Lillian! You don’t even know my name, do you?” I asked coldly.
He looked at me apologetically and then shook his head.
“I figured, like how could you even attempt to know my name when you don’t want us,” I said as he quickly moved and grabbed my hands.
Instantly, I felt calmer.
“That’s not true,” he answered loudly.
“I know what you are trying to do, Alpha, but it won’t work,” I said angrily.
“What is your name?” He asked softly.
“Is this a joke? Why are you asking me right now? Is it because of what I said?” I asked back and then swallowed hard.
It was taking everything in me not to smile at him and just tell him.
“Look, I know I messed up big time. But I swear it’s the truth that I want both of you. Me and Ridge are willing to do anything to make you happy,” he answered.
Before I could respond, he moved my hand and pressed it against his chest.
“If I’m doing something wrong by asking your name, then please pierce my heart once more,” he said as I quickly pulled my hand away, feeling conflicted.
“Please,” he whispered as I swallowed hard.
“Maila,” I whispered back, then gritted my teeth.
Why was I failing so miserably to hurt him?
His face lit up, and a smile touched his face.
“Maila,” he said as I felt my heart flutter.
I couldn’t help but look into his eyes as he gazed back into mine.
I felt like I was being drawn to him, and I found myself taking a step closer to close the space between us.
“Alpha,” Talic called, making me come to my senses. As he walked towards us, I quickly took a step back.
“Fuck! What is it?” Jace asked furiously in a loud growl.
“I have it here, the wolfsbane,” he answered as he extended his hand to him.
The wolfsbane was in a bottle in liquid form.
Jace wasted no time in grabbing the bottle from his hand.
When he opened it, I felt my heart ache.
“Stop him, he will suffer too much,” Lillian said loudly.
“That’s the whole idea,” I answered when he pressed it to his lips.
“No!” Lillian exclaimed and took partial control.
He was about to drink it when she moved and grabbed the bottle from his hand.
I quickly pushed her back and took full control of our body.
“Stay back, Lillian,” I warned.
“Maila?” Jace called in a form of question.
“On second thought, I will drink it. That way it will hurt your poor heart seeing us unconscious again and…”
“I dare you,” He said strongly as I flinched. His eyes were switching to that of Ridge.
I cleared my throat and then threw the bottle a little further away.
It was clear how I was stronger than him, yet there was something about him that made me want to submit whenever he released his aura and pheromones.
“I am going to rest,” I said and then turned to walk away when he grabbed my hand.
“Let me escort you,” he said as I pulled it back angrily.
“Don’t push your luck,” I answered seriously and then went back to my room with a rapidly beating heart.
“You know, he truly looks like he is willing to know us,” Lillian said when I huffed and threw myself on the bed.
“That’s what anyone in their right mind would do after knowing how valuable we are,” I answered, then closed my eyes thinking about the time he had attempted to drink the wolfsbane.
If I hadn’t gotten in his way, would he have done it?
I got to my feet once I had inhaled his scent at the door. Although his footsteps were silent, I knew he was there.
“What do you want?” I asked loudly.
The door opened, and he walked in with a bottle of wolfsbane in his hand.
“You asked me to drink this if I wanted you to accept me as your mate,” he answered.
Was he in his right mind? It wasn’t even long since I threw the damn bottle to the floor. Could he not tell that I had changed my mind?
“Get out, Jace,” I said seriously, then threw myself back on the bed.
When the scent of wolfsbane got stronger, I quickly sat upright and looked at him in disbelief.
The bottle was now empty in his hand, and he had a pained expression on his face.
I quickly rushed to his side and grabbed his hand.
“Quickly to the bathroom, you need to throw up!” I screamed as he looked at me, then groaned in pain and fell to his knees.
Without thinking, I rushed out of the room and went to Talic’s room, pushing it open. He immediately stood up from his bed.
“Luna,” he called.
“He drank it,” I said in a panicked voice.
“Drunk what?” he asked.
“The wolfsbane! Call the healer,” I exclaimed.
“You threw it away, remember?” he pointed out as I growled at him.
“He might die!” I yelled as his expression changed to that of fear.
He quickly ran past me as a tear rolled down my cheek.
“Why do you feel so sad, isn’t this what you wanted?” Lillian asked at the top of her voice.
She sounded like she was in pain, and I too was beginning to feel guilty and confused.
“He deserves it. Look, you might have forgotten the pain he made us go through, but…”
“I did not, okay! But is this how it should be, repaying bad for bad? I’m not asking you to be with him or to accept him, I’m just asking you to let him be. You don’t have to make him suffer this much!” She yelled as I turned in silence and slowly went back to my room where I found the healer attending to Jace, who was lying on the bed, badly sweating. His lips were slightly covered in blood.
“Did he throw up?” I asked in a small voice.
I was getting scared of everything that was going on.
“He did, but it was in the form of blood,” Talic answered with a murderous gaze.
I hesitated but moved closer and looked at Jace, who gave me a pained smile before closing his eyes.
“Healer?” I called in the form of a question.
“He will be fine, Luna. I’m glad that the Beta acted fast. If the Alpha didn’t throw up, he would have gone into a coma or lost his wolf for good because what he took was an overdose,” she answered as I felt terrified.
“For now, he won’t speak much, but after three days of rest, he will be back to his old self. I have treated him to the very best of my abilities, so he will recover quickly. Just make sure he eats well too,” she said, then excused herself and walked out.
“Luna, if you are going to take out your anger on someone, please let it be us who killed you. Spare the Alpha, please,” Talic pleaded as Jace opened his eyes and shook his head.
“Very well, as of tomorrow, you will leave the pack,” I answered as Jace tried to sit upright but fell back with a loud, pained groan.
I closed my eyes and then breathed out heavily.
“I’ll think about a suitable punishment with time. You are lucky I’m not a monster like you guys were,” I said and then walked into the bathroom to be alone.
I felt sad, and it was unfair to treat Lillian like I did. She was my human, and she deserved to have a say in everything; that’s why I was going to let her take over.
