Chapter 75 A Bit Of Hope

When Gordon heard the term “disabled,” the corners of his mouth twitched involuntarily. “Is that a personal attack? Who’s disabled?”
“I see you can’t even eat without a woman pushing you around. Are you sure you’re not broken? Don’t push yourself too hard.”
“Don’t worry, when I have a bunch of kids, I’ll invite you to come have a drink with me.”
Conrad smirked, “I’m afraid your kids might not all belong to the same women. How many do you plan to have in a year? Do I need to make an appearance at each one’s birth?”
The two men exchanged sharp words while Lillian and Daisy had no chance to interrupt.
“You two sure have a great relationship,” Daisy said with a smile. “But let’s hurry up and order; you two aren’t hungry, but Lillian and I are getting famished.”
Gordon casually ordered two dishes, and Daisy added, “Mr. Gordon, your leg isn’t fully healed, so this dish might not be the best choice. How about something lighter? Lillian, do you have any food preferences?”
“She doesn’t like black truffle,” Conrad replied, and once again, the room fell silent.
Gordon suddenly asked, “You’re quite thoughtful as a boss. You remember your employees’ eating habits-don’t let Miss Daisy get the wrong idea.”
Daisy laughed, “How could that be? I was curious earlier too, why Conrad treats Lillian so specially. Now I get it-it’s just love for the house and the dog.”
Gordon looked at Conrad, “Miss Daisy is quite eloquent. What do you think?”
Conrad snickered lightly, “Should I hand her over to you?”
Daisy’s expression changed.
Gordon raised an eyebrow, “That’s a bit too much. I’m carefree and unreliable, Miss Daisy wouldn’t be interested in me. It’d be up to you to pair with her.”
“You’re so concerned about who I end up with, could it be that you’re thinking of marrying me?”
“If you don’t mind, I can marry you. After we get married, I could take a portion of your money.”
“Is your Smith family going bankrupt? Are you in a rush to scam me? I’m not interested in old men like you.”
“Should I remind you? We’re the same age, and you’re actually one month older than me.”
“Is that so? Then you should take better care of yourself. When Lillian pushed you in, I thought I saw her uncle.”
Though Lillian had witnessed Conrad’s sharp tongue before, she hadn’t expected it to be this sharp.
Gordon was so pissed off he couldn’t help but laugh at the bastard.
Luckily, the chef soon brought the dishes out, and Daisy had prepared a lot to make the lunch feel romantic.
The group ate while listening to elegant music, and engaging in light conversation.
Daisy knew how to keep the conversation flowing. Wherever she was, there was never an awkward silence.
Gordon had to admit, no wonder they said Daisy would be the perfect wife. But after seeing so many women like her, it wasn’t that interesting. The whole meal felt dull and tasteless.
As Daisy gradually realized that she was the only one talking, she awkwardly said, “By the way, next month I’m planning to hold a charity dinner. I want to invite Conrad’s friends, and Mr. Gordon, please bring Lillian along.”
“I can’t make that decision. You know my leg isn’t convenient right now.”
“What about you, Lillian?”
Conrad suddenly set down his water glass. “I’m full. It’s time to head back to work.”
Daisy was surprised. “But you only had one bite.”
“I’m picky with food.”
Daisy opened her mouth to respond, but quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe her mouth. “There’s still time, and we have two desserts left.”
“I don’t like sweets.”
Lillian couldn’t help but exchange a glance with Gordon. Conrad didn’t like sweets? He was lying through his teeth.
However, their little exchange didn’t go unnoticed by Conrad.
Conrad suddenly spoke, “Didn’t you say you liked that painting in the gallery? Go ahead and pay the bill, consider it my thank-you gift for today. I really enjoyed myself, thanks for the treat.”
Daisy didn’t expect Conrad to express his gratitude. She smiled sweetly, “It’s okay, as long as you like it. I’m happy to give you anything. I won’t keep you from work. I’ll wait for you to come to the charity dinner.”
Daisy said as she grabbed her bag. “Let’s go out together.”
Conrad didn’t even glance at Lillian. If she didn’t follow, and instead went to help Gordon, she better not blame him for turning hostile.
To his surprise, Lillian knew exactly how to piss him off.
By the time Conrad reached the door of the restaurant, Lillian was still only pushing Gordon. “I need to get back to work; I can’t skip out.”
“Then you owe me a meal.”
“Did you bring me here just to mess things up?”
“What do you mean, mess things up? Haven’t you been with Conrad for three years? Are you really willing to just let him go to another woman?”
Lillian looked a little uneasy. “Do you really think I could change Conrad’s mind?”
“Lillian, I don’t know. But if you can’t break free of him right now, whether by force or willingly, deep down you’re still holding onto a bit of hope, right?” Gordon looked at her. “You want to be the special exception, don’t you?”
Lillian felt like someone had struck her hard in the chest.
Gordon smiled knowingly, “Think about it, but as long as he isn’t engaged, you shouldn’t make him feel like you’re indispensable.”
“But… why? Why help me? Do you like me?” Lillian asked directly.
Gordon clicked his tongue. “That’s a bit too broad. But at least I don’t dislike you. I’ve got many things I like, but I don’t throw around the word ‘love’ easily. Lillian, maybe I really have fallen for you. But that may not be a good thing for you.”
Lillian breathed a sigh of relief but couldn’t help saying, “You’re young, rich, and falling for me isn’t exactly a good thing.”
Besides, if that caused a fallout with Conrad, it would be a huge loss for him.
“No, I’ll make you give up on Conrad, then I’ll step in when the time’s right.”
Lillian was speechless. “What kind of kink is that?”
Gordon thought for a moment. “I guess if the person I fought so hard to save is still just like a stray dog, my competitive spirit won’t let it go. So, Lillian, you’d better pray I don’t fall for you.”
“Then please don’t.” Right now, her life was already messy enough.
She would take her grandmother and leave City N. The people and things here-she needed to owe as little as possible.
Conrad stood at the door but didn’t immediately get in the car. Instead, he turned his head and stared darkly at the two people inside the restaurant, chatting and laughing.
“Lillian and Mr. Gordon seem like a good match, don’t they?”
“Match?” Conrad said coldly, then shot a frosty glance at Daisy.
She might look foolish, but she was also blind.
“Lillian’s status is indeed different from ours now, but when it comes to love, it doesn’t always have to be about matching social classes. At least she’s still beautiful; it’s a match of talents and looks, don’t you think?”
“Daisy.”
“Hm?”
“I don’t like people who think they’re too clever.”
Daisy opened her mouth to reply, but Conrad cut her off. “You don’t need to keep pointing things out. You know why I chose you. Your greatest strength is your ability to tolerate people. Evelyn is the one I specifically wanted. I don’t care about the rest. Just have your brother Martin get her to me properly. As for the people around me, stay out of it.”
Daisy bit her lip. “I understand.”
