Chapter 46 Her Choice

“The blood test results are in. It looks like you were injected with a substance similar to a sedative. You were unconscious, but you could still follow instructions and do anything they told you to do. So, the footage of you getting into the car on your own was likely the result of that drug,” George explained after thinking for a moment.
He continued, “This was probably a tactic to buy time on their part. There are no major concerns right now, but if you start feeling dizzy, or lightheaded, hear ringing in your ears, or experience body aches or confusion, get to a doctor immediately. You were lucky to get timely medical help at the time; otherwise, the consequences could’ve been unimaginable.”
Timely medical help…
So, she had gotten into the car on her own?
Did that mean the person she saw swimming toward her in the ocean was actually Conrad?
It wasn’t just a hallucination.
Lillian looked at Conrad, her expression complicated. Was he out of his mind? Did he have any idea how high that cliff was? Did he realize that if it had been a bottomless abyss, he would’ve died with her?
If he could go that far for her…
Could he really…
George finished his clinical report with his usual emotionless tone and, without paying any attention to Lillian’s reaction, turned to Conrad. “Come out. I’ve got something to discuss with you.”
Conrad really thought he was invincible, huh?
He’d been stuck at Lillian’s side for three days straight without moving an inch. At this rate, if he died, it’d stain his hospital’s reputation.
Conrad shot George a glance and then told Melissa, “Wait here and help her clean up. Change her into a new hospital gown. She’s a clean freak. The rest of you, get lost. Nothing for you to do here.”
The last part was clearly aimed at Frank.
But Conrad never cared about giving anyone face. If he didn’t want to, he wouldn’t. He never considered anyone else’s opinion or attitude. He’d say whatever was on his mind.
Frank didn’t take offense at the words. He nodded and said, “Mr. Conrad, you’re right. Lillian, what else do you need? I’ll go take care of it. It’s not right to keep troubling outsiders.” “After all, before Dad passed, he entrusted me with taking care of you.”
Conrad’s teeth clenched at the mention of “outsiders.”
Outsiders?
He and Lillian were practically married already. How could he be considered an outsider?
This so-called adopted son of the Lewis family, showing up out of nowhere, was now trying to pick the ‘fruit’ he had nurtured for three years?
He wouldn’t tolerate that.
“Out of your league.”
Conrad threw the question back at Lillian, asking who she wanted to stay and take care of her.
If she dared choose this random guy who’d suddenly popped up, she’d better not blame him when he turned cold.
Everyone turned to look at Lillian.
If she chose Conrad, they’d keep going back and forth, tangled up in the mess he’d made. He’d saved her life, but he had also brought her nothing but trouble…
If she chose Frank…
After a long pause, Lillian finally spoke to Frank. “I know you care about me, but my dad’s already gone. You don’t owe me anything. Just live your own life. It’s not good for you to be too close to me, so please, go back.”
It was the answer Frank had been expecting. He didn’t say anything else, just gave her a gentle smile. “Alright. Whatever you decide, I respect your choice. Just remember, no matter what happens, there’s always someone who’ll open a door for you.”
“Ugh,” Conrad scoffed, cutting through the tenderness of the moment.
Frank stood up straight. “I’ll go take care of Grandma. Once you’re feeling better, come see her.”
Before Lillian could reject him, Frank added, “This is the only thing I can do for you. Don’t turn me down. You can’t do everything yourself, and Grandma can’t be left alone. Like last time, what would happen without someone there?”
Lillian fell silent. That hit too close to her weak spot.
Conrad, already impatient, snapped, “There’s no need. She’s got a dedicated nurse now. Just focus on yourself.”
Frank spoke gently, “Thank you, Mr. Conrad, but family’s always more reliable than outsiders. Grandma will miss us, too. I’ll come pick Lillian up later.”
George grinned, enjoying the scene. This guy named Frank wasn’t simple. It had been a long time since he’d seen someone get under Conrad’s skin like that.
Frank slowly left the room, and as soon as he stepped out into the hallway, his expression hardened. Conrad wasn’t right for Lillian-too involved with other women, and with that attitude of his, Lillian must’ve been suffering a lot. If her father could see her now, he’d never let her go through this.
Lillian… I’ll come back for you.
Conrad shot Lillian a fierce glare before turning to leave with George. “What’s going on?”
George looked at him with disdain. “You went to the White family, threatened them, and managed to get Old Mrs. White so upset she ended up in the hospital. Daisy’s downstairs, waiting. Meanwhile, you’re up here hiding. There’s no secret in this world that stays hidden forever. You’re roasting Lillian alive with this nonsense.”
“I’ve got this under control,” Conrad replied, not bothered.
George rolled his eyes. “If you say so, but don’t be surprised if you end up killing yourself with all this stress.”
Conrad stayed quiet, not in the mood to argue. “You can’t even manage your own wife. Have you taken care of your own affairs? Everyone in City N knows your divorce drama with Melissa. You’re sitting here all calm and collected while that mess is going on?”
The two men fell silent.
George cleared his throat, changing the subject. “What about the Hunter’s family? You’re keeping Hunter locked up, refusing him treatment or food-are you trying to get him killed?”
Conrad shrugged, “He should’ve known the consequences before pulling any of this. As for Lillian, anyone who dares lay a hand on her better be ready to meet their maker. If his family wants to bury him, they can start preparing the funeral.”
George opened his mouth, but then thought better of it, realizing Conrad wasn’t the kind of guy who cared about anyone’s opinion. So, he just shut up.
