Chapter 45 The Obsession

With Conrad staring at her, the nurse felt a little intimidated while drawing Lillian’s blood.
“Be gentle.”
“We know, Mr. Conrad.”
Once the equipment was changed, Conrad’s gaze was still locked on them.
The medical staff felt pretty awkward. What’s the deal with him? We’re not human traffickers here… what exactly is he worried about?
But of course, no one dared to say anything.
Finally, when Lillian’s physical exam was done, the psychologist arrived to do her evaluation.
George came back with the report and was about to corner Melissa to get some answers when he spotted her chatting with a well-dressed, polite man at the end of the hall.
Frank frowned. “You just got back? Where’s Lillian? Can I go see her?”
Melissa looked unsure. “I’m not exactly sure, but it should be nothing serious. You’re not going to work? How did you find out about Lillian?”
Frank’s eyes glinted. “A friend of mine told me they saw Lillian being brought to the hospital. I didn’t believe it, but after two days of no contact, I came to check myself.”
Melissa nodded. “So that’s how it is.”
“Hello, Dr. George.”
At the sound of movement, Melissa turned to see the cold, arrogant man standing there, staring at her.
“Come with me,” George said, turning his head. “Try not coming.”
Melissa could’ve screamed at him, but she bit her tongue and muttered, “I’ll go now.”
Frank looked at George and nodded. “I’ll wait here for Lillian.”
Melissa awkwardly said, “Conrad’s here. You should probably head back.”
Before she could say anything else, Frank grabbed her arm. “Conrad? Why’s he here? Is Lillian always with him?”
Melissa wasn’t too keen on sharing the details of Lillian and Conrad’s private matters with Frank. After all, the less people knew about such disgraceful things, the better.
“Let go.” George’s cold voice cut through.
Both Melissa and Frank looked at George.
George grabbed Melissa’s wrist with one hand, expressionless as he yanked her away from Frank.
“Let’s go.” George stared at Frank briefly, then dragged Melissa away, speaking in a calm but firm tone.
Melissa waved a hand at Frank, signaling him to leave quickly. If Conrad showed up, things would be worse for everyone.
Melissa was quickly pulled into George’s office, and the door slammed shut with a loud bang.
George tugged at his collar, his eyes cold as he looked down at the stubborn woman in front of him.
“You see a man, and you just can’t walk away, can you?”
Melissa rolled her eyes. “Frank’s got a better temper than you, and he’s a gentleman. Honestly, I kind of get why I can’t walk away from him.”
George clenched his teeth, clearly not amused, but he wasn’t in the mood for a petty argument.
Melissa eyed the report in his hands. “How’s Lillian?”
“Concerned about her? She’s got Conrad looking after her. You should be thinking about how you’re going to die.”
Melissa shot him a glare. “If you wanna curse me, just do it outright. Can’t I care about my friend? You guys at Thomas family are supposed to run healthcare, not kill people.”
“How do you wanna die? Pick your poison,” George said, pulling out a stack of bills from his desk drawer.
“You’re practically my ex-husband. How I die is none of your business. My future husband can handle it.”
“Alright, my future ex-wife, explain this to me.” He tapped a finger on the pile of bills.
Melissa rolled her eyes. “What’s this? You can’t read a bill? Aren’t you the genius?”
George laughed, clearly losing patience. “Why should I pay for your three-day, two-night male stripper show and one-on-one massage with a ‘special treatment’?”
Melissa pulled out a chair and sat down, unfazed. “Because I’m still Mrs. George, and I have the right to use your money. If you’re so unwilling, why don’t you just get a divorce?”
George grinned, “Oh, wait,” his smile widening. “Oh, I suddenly think you’re kinda cute, wasting my money like this. I’m not planning on divorcing you anymore.”
“…!” Melissa’s face changed, her eyes narrowing. “Are you crazy?”
“I’m a doctor. I know exactly what’s wrong with me. Don’t worry, I’m not dying anytime soon. You’ve still got decades before you have to worry about being a widow. So, if you’re annoyed, just keep it to yourself.”
George grabbed his report and stood up, leaning in to stare at her. “Since you’re in my spouse column, you’ll carry the title of Mrs. George for the rest of your life. If you think you can swap men, keep dreaming.”
Melissa couldn’t help but blush at his face being so close to hers.
Seeing her reaction, George sneered, mocking her. “Your body is much more honest than your mouth.”
Melissa quickly tried to explain, “That was because I was hot! You don’t seriously think I’m still obsessed with you, do you?”
“Oh~ so it’s not a crush, it’s an obsession,” George said, grinning as he picked up on her slip of the tongue.
Melissa immediately realized she’d said something wrong. Sure enough, George pounced on it, leaving her speechless.
George smirked smugly and walked out the door.
Fuming, Melissa stomped her foot and hurried after him.
At the door of the hospital room, Frank was waiting. Conrad had just finished the checkup with Lillian and walked back to see Frank standing there.
“Lillian!” Frank rushed forward and reached out to Conrad.
But Conrad didn’t stop. “Move.”
He shoved Frank aside with his shoulder and walked into the room, carrying Lillian.
Frank froze for a second, wanting to follow in, but Conrad’s bodyguard immediately blocked his way.
Frank stood there, still, not wanting to argue.
Conrad laid Lillian down on the bed, then turned to see Frank still lingering. He asked her, “You wanna lie down for a bit?”
The tall man was practically enveloping the small woman in his arms…
From Frank’s angle, it almost looked like Conrad was kissing her. His fist clenched tightly.
“I just woke up, and I have so many questions I want to ask you,” Lillian said, her voice soft.
Conrad lowered his gaze. “What do you want to ask?”
As soon as Conrad sat down, Lillian saw Frank standing at the door. She tried to get up, but Conrad frowned and said, “Didn’t I tell you not to move? You want to look like an idiot?”
Then, he turned his head to say, “Let him in.”
After being allowed in, Frank walked slowly toward the bed, setting the things he brought on the bedside table. “Lillian, how’s your health?”
“I’m still waiting for the test results, but I feel fine.”
Frank looked at her pale face, his eyes full of concern.
Conrad shot him a cold glare. “Oh, feeling fine but you’ve been unconscious for two days? You must be getting stupid.”
Hearing this, Frank shot a glance at Conrad. “These past two days, thanks to Mr. Conrad for taking care of her. From now on, I’ll be looking after Lillian. Mr. Conrad, you’ve got a lot on your plate, so no need to bother.”
Conrad gave him a mocking look, about to retort with something like, What do you think you are? Who needs your advice on what I do?
But Frank didn’t let him get a word in. Instead, he focused on Lillian. “There’s been some issues with Grandma over the last couple of days. The hospital couldn’t reach you, and I was really worried.”
Lillian immediately sat up, her face full of worry. “How is she now? Is she okay?”
“She’s fine. A specialist came who specializes in your grandma’s condition. She’s been moved to a special care unit now, and someone from the Thomas family is overseeing her. I can visit once a day. The important thing is, you’re fine.”
Specialist?
Lillian instinctively looked at Conrad.
Conrad looked like he couldn’t care less, wearing his usual cold, indifferent expression.
Just then, George knocked on the door, holding the report. “Here’s the report.”
Melissa quickly followed him in.
George handed the report over, and both Frank and Conrad reached out at the same time.
Melissa looked up at the ceiling, thinking, What is this? She couldn’t help but feel incredibly embarrassed for Lillian.
