After returning to City N, Sarah tried to reach Mr. Brown but never saw him.
It seemed like Mr. Brown he really did get a huge sum of money from Holden, considering he had closed his company and was reportedly traveling around the world. This money was likely the divorce settlement Holden gave to the Brown family to ensure they wouldn’t bother the Smith family anymore.
Sarah felt some anger bubbling up inside her and wanted to find an opportunity to confront him.
Three days later, David called Sarah and told her the Brown family had sent someone.
Sarah was in the middle of removing her makeup at the set when she got the call. Without even finishing, she jumped in her car and headed to the Brown family’s place.
David had been waiting outside for a while. “Your stepmom and stepsister don’t seem to be back yet, only your dad came home.”
Sarah knocked on the door.
After a short while, Mr. Brown opened the door.
Upon seeing Sarah, he complained, “So you finally decided to show up? You’ve become such a big star; it’s amazing how you’ve stopped caring about your parents.”
Sarah kicked the doorframe. “How much money did you get from Holden?”
Mr. Brown rolled his eyes, clearly irritated. “What’s it to you? You think you can just butt in my business now that you’ve got some success?”
Just thinking about it made Mr. Brown annoyed with Sarah. She was just a little leech, getting a good marriage without sharing it with her sister, and then hiding away to live the good life all by herself. It was downright ungrateful.
For all those years, Monica and Viola treated Sarah like a little servant, and even a small compliment from them made Sarah act like a puppy wagging its tail.
Now that Sarah was soaring high, they both wanted to pull her back down no matter what.
Mr. Brown was getting fed up with their nagging and, since he couldn’t stand Sarah enjoying her life alone, he was determined to make sure Holden and Sarah got divorced.
Thinking about the recent turmoil at home, Mr. Brown was boiling with rage. “I raised you with so much difficulty, spoiling you since you were little, even sending you abroad to study. And what do I get? A thankless brat who doesn’t care about her family! Why are you questioning me? You married some rich guy; isn’t it normal for me to ask him for a little cash?”
Sarah’s expression instantly turned cold. “David, close the door. Let me show him what’s what!”
Mr. Brown, who was getting older and had some chronic illnesses, suddenly felt a bit panicked hearing Sarah’s words. “What are you going to do? I’m your father! It’s illegal for daughters to hit their dads! If this gets out, you can forget about your career in the entertainment industry!”
Sarah loosened her wrist, suddenly remembering that as a famous star, hitting her father wouldn’t look good.
David punched Mr. Brown in the eye. “Sorry, Mr. Brown, but you’re not my dad, so I can hit you.”
Mr. Brown had never expected Sarah would dare to be so disobedient; he was genuinely scared this time. “You… you guys…”
David scoffed and hit him again. “You think you can just pamper her? You know when Sarah was in elementary school, your new wife woman wouldn’t feed her or give her pocket money, so Sarah had to go eat at my mom’s house? My pocket money was already tight, and I had to give Sarah most of it! It’s all your fault!”
Sarah, “…”
Sarah crossed her arms, coldly looking at him. “How much did you get from Holden?”
Mr. Brown was really frightened now. “Eighty million…”
“Give it all to me.”
Mr. Brown gritted his teeth. “Your mom and sister secretly took it to invest in some project with Mr. Reuben from the Smith family. They teamed up with him, and now they’ve lost everything and are in trouble for fraud.”
Sarah raised an eyebrow. “How much savings do you have now?”
Mr. Brown hesitated. “Uh…”
David thought for a moment. “At least five hundred million.”
Mr. Brown shot Sarah a look. “I’m not dead yet, and you already want to claim my inheritance? Your sister is just in jail; she didn’t die.”
Sarah coldly replied, “Eighty million. Transfer it to my account within three days, or every time I see you, I’ll take a swing at you. David, keep someone on him these next few days.”
Mr. Brown had a pretty good relationship with David’s dad since they were neighbors and they often drank and visited prostitutes together when they were young. Both men were not exactly upstanding guys; they cheated on their wives and even hit David’s mom when they got home. This made David want to punch his dad ever since he was a kid.
But David’s mom was naturally soft-hearted and would never let him hit his own father. Since he couldn’t take a swing at his dad, he figured he might as well take it out on Sarah’s dad. After all, these two guys were birds of a feather.
He kicked Mr. Brown. “Did you hear that? Sarah wants you to send her eighty million in three days.”
Mr. Brown was furious, jumping up and down. “Dream on! My money is for your sister! You don’t get a dime!”
Sarah raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Are you sure about that?”
Mr. Brown watched as David started cracking his knuckles, each pop echoing ominously, and he deflated like a balloon that had just been pricked.
Holden hadn’t mentioned anything about divorce; he just gave Mr. Brown a check and told him not to bother him anymore.
A little while ago, Viola and Monica had been causing a scene at home. To calm Viola down, Mr. Brown lied to her, saying Holden would soon be divorcing Sarah, and he gave that check to Viola and Monica.
Unexpectedly, Viola managed to get in touch with Mr. Reuben from the Smith family through some connections.
Once Holden took full control of the Smith family, Reuben got kicked out completely.
Viola and Monica were drawn to Reuben’s status and quickly believed him. They not only invested their eighty million into Reuben’s supposedly high-profit project but also helped him recruit more investors.
In the end, the whole project turned out to be a scheme; Reuben disappeared after he had made his money, and Viola and Monica were soon arrested by the police. They caught Reuben trying to flee to the airport the next day.
If Mr. Brown wanted to see his precious little daughter and wife at home, he’d have to wait at least three years.
Right now, he was all alone at home without any help.
And let’s face it, it wouldn’t be smart to say anything else wrong. If he did, this ungrateful daughter of his would definitely have David, that little punk, beat him up again.
Seeing David raise his hand again, Mr. Brown covered his head. “You ungrateful daughter, you-”
“Fathers are kind, and sons are filial,” Sarah said, giving him a once-over. “What do you have that’s worth me being filial to you?”
Mr. Brown’s face turned all sorts of colors-red and green as she spoke. “You-”
“Eighty million. It better be in my account by tonight.” Sarah pushed the door open and walked out. “Or you can just wait for it.”
David followed up with his own threat. “Mr. Brown, just wait! Sarah won’t let this go. I’ll take a swing at you every time I see you.”
Once they left, Mr. Brown collapsed onto the sofa, unable to get up for a long time.
He couldn’t wrap his head around when Sarah had turned into this.
She used to be grateful for everything, for him and Monica working hard to raise her.
Mr. Brown didn’t feel much for Sarah as a daughter. To him, she was just as despicable as her mother, while Viola was the daughter he truly valued.
After the beating he took from Sarah and David today, he was fuming.
His face turned ashen, and he thought to himself that experience always wins; these two young kids thought they could take him on? It was nothing but a dream!
