CHAPTER NINETY-FOUR
BURKE’S POV
“Emma has gotten the syndrome, and it will soon get to you if we don’t take the right actions,” My advisor said, and he was in a rage as he stood in front of me.
I heard his family has gotten the syndrome as well and has been quarantined. The board members did not want to hear any more excuses, they needed a solution that I can’t give.
“It’s either you take action or you step down, Burke,” My uncle interrupted; I was not sure he was concerned about the Wolf’s syndrome; he thinks this is an opportunity to become Alpha, and I won’t let that happen.
“I am your Alpha; address me as one,” I commanded, and the board room was filled with murmurs and grumbles; I missed Jack immediately; he would have yelled for silence.
“Silence, he is still the Alpha, give respect to whom it is due to,” Diago yelled, trying to keep the pack together.
I didn’t know whether to appreciate him or ignore him because he acted insane; sometimes, he was in his right senses and acted nice, and other times, he wasn’t normal.
“Thank you Diago,” I appreciated his effort anywhere, even if I didn’t get moved by it.
Diago gave me a slight nod before sitting in the chair beside me as my right-hand man and the acting second in command.
“We would give respect to whom deserve it, an Alpha who put his people before his dead wife, an Alpha who takes actions when there is a need for action to be taken,” The pack’s judge yelled, without standing to his feet, which was rude but ignored his rudeness, his ten years old daughter had gotten the syndrome and he is not in the right state of mind.
I hate causing my people pain, but marrying again would cause me pain, and I might not do right by the lady; she would even cheat on me because I would never have sex with her.
The pack wants me to sacrifice my happiness for them, which I would have gladly done in another scenario, in which Catherine isn’t involved.
“I will not allow anyone to speak again, if there are going to be rude remarks about me, I forgive you all for your derogatory statement, because most of you are in grief,” I said, and they all started murmuring again, I raised my hand as a sign of telling them to be silent but they ignored it.
“Silence, I am still the Alpha,” I thundered at me; they would hardly hear my voice because my wolf’s voice was more audible.
I saw as they shivered and kept quiet immediately, not wanting to experience my rot.
“I will seek another method to cure the syndrome, marrying again isn’t an option,” I said, and my uncle banged our round desk loudly as he stood up.
“You weren’t given any option, Burke; you were given a cure, and if you can’t do right by your people, step the fuck down and allow the adults to do it,” my uncle groaned at me, his voice sounding very angry.
I stood up as well, staring into his eyes, making him lose the confidence he thought he had. When he could not stare into my eyes any longer, he gulped hard and sat back on his chair.
I would have stepped down willingly; my people’s lives matter more than my ego, but stepping down for my uncle is not an option as well; he wouldn’t be able to rule my people.
“This meeting is over,” I yelled and stormed out of the room, allowing them to stare at me in surprise.
I banged the door behind me and headed towards my room.
“I heard Burke, congratulations,” Ava said, running towards me. I didn’t have the time for her weird observation about Nikky, so I just ignored her and continued walking fast.
“You need to reduce your pace; I am just here to congratulate you; I’m so proud of you,” She said, trying to keep up with my pace.
I stopped immediately wondering what she meant by that.
“Can you explain what you need, Ava? I have things to do,” I said, and she smiled at me.
” I heard you are getting married to Harley soon; in fact, she told me herself, ” Ava explained, grinning widely.
“Fuck no, I am not going to marry her, I just called her to talk to her,” I lied.
I wasn’t going to marry her, but I had intended to, that is why I called her out to ask her what she thinks about marriage. After thinking things through, I felt marrying Harley would be betraying Catherine.
“You are lying, and I know that. Have you changed your mind on marrying her?” She said, and I rolled my eyes.
“I didn’t mention that I was going to marry her, I just asked her how she would feel being married,” I said, almost yelling, exhausted with her questions.
“If you… ”
“I am going to see Emma, and I’ll see you later, Ava,” I interrupted her sternly, ending the conversation.
I did wait for her to speak again, before walking off.
I grabbed my car keys from the car key holder in the living room before leaving.
I got to the car park and entered my car, heading to the quarantine house to see Emma.
It had been a routine for me; it was the only way I would apologize to Jack for allowing his wife to suffer when I could heal her.
If I was to marry, I’d go for Harley, because I have known her more than the other woman who keeps trying to seduce me. Harley might be evil but she knows me more.
But I can’t marry her; it’s betraying both Catherine and Jack; that’s what is keeping me from getting married and saving my pack.
Soon, I was at the quarantine house; I got out of my car and entered the house.
“Good day, Alpha, Burke,” The quarantine master greeted me, but I ignored him and grabbed the nose mask he held in his hand.
I wore it and went to Emma’s quarantine room; it was locked because no one was allowed inside; their wolves are very aggressive and get aggressive every day.
“Emma, I’m here again,” I said, coldly from the small opening at the top of the door that enabled me to see her a little.
She turned and howled at me, grinding her teeth together, wanting to attack me, her eyes were getting red by the day.
“Her condition is getting worse by the day, Alpha Burke; I think her system can’t handle the syndrome; she might not live to see the next four moons,” the quarantine master said, tapping me on the shoulder, before leaving me alone.
Tears welled up in my eyes and I tried to shake it off. I can’t allow Emma to die when I can help.
“I’ll get married to Harley two moons from now, so you don’t die,” I told her as tears fell from my eyes.
