CHAPTER EIGHTY-EIGHT
BURKE’S POV
I didn’t know what to say at the moment; the realization dawned on me that my pack wanted me to get married again when I hadn’t been able to move on.
“That can’t be the only way; I just lost my wife-to-be; I can’t get married immediately,” I yelled; the truth is that I am not even planning on getting married again; if it’s not Catherine, then I’ll stay single till death.
“You can’t put people’s lives at risk because of one person, Alpha; they are your people, remember?” Diago said, but it fell on deaf ears.
The thought of getting married again was something I didn’t even want to think of. Besides, it has been two weeks, and I still feel a mate bond with Catherine, something stronger than ever, and I don’t even know why.
“We know you are going through a lot and would not be in the right senses to find a wife, so we found some for you,” My Adviser said, and soon, ladies of different skin colors and sizes started entering the board room.
I could even believe my board members have gone this far to look for a bride for me, what the fuck is going on.
“I can’t get married again, I still feel a mate bond with Catherine,” I said, trying to give an excuse.
“That’s because you chose to believe she is still alive; she is dead, Alpha; you need to move on; the pack needs to move on,” Diago said, placing a friendly hand on my shoulders like we were friends.
I flung his hand off my shoulder; he didn’t know what he was saying; Diago had never had a mate; if he was female, he would be tagged as wolfless because why would a wolf lack a mate?
The ladies stood in a single line, smiling at me, some even threw kisses at me.
They all dressed in the same fashion, wearing only black because they knew it was my favorite color.
“What the fuck is happening?” I asked a rhetorical question, not certain of what else to say.
“This is Ariana, the daughter of Jim McCarthy,” My adviser introduced a girl, who started walking towards me; she turned around multiple times.
I didn’t know why I was still seated watching this display of madness by my board members.
“I have had enough of this,” I yelled and everywhere went silent.
I stood off from my chair and started heading towards the exit door, angrily.
“The ladies aren’t done with Introducing themselves, you might find someone you love,” Diago yelled after me.
“I am done with the Introduction, Diago,” I retorted, not turning back to look at me, although I could feel his eyes glaring at my back, wanting to strangle me, but he couldn’t, not to brag, but I was his Alpha, a Mighty Alpha at that.
“We aren’t done with the board meeting,” Diago said, and I turned to look him in the eyes.
“I am the Alpha, and when I say it’s over, it’s over, Diago, don’t test my fucking patience,” I said sternly to him before leaving the board room.
I knew my board members were angry at me and would come running to my room to talk to me.
“I don’t want to be disturbed; if anyone comes and you let them in, I’ll throw you to the north Turret without hearing any excuse,” I threatened the guards guarding my room.
They nodded respectfully and I entered the room.
I inhaled deeply wondering how I got into this twist. For the first time, I got angry at Catherine for leaving me rather than blaming myself for her death.
“Fuck,” I cursed under my breath as I got out of my suit jacket and pants into a comfortable black denim shorts and black shirt.
I lay on my bed, and I didn’t know when I drifted to sleep.
“Wake the fuck up, sleepy head,” I heard my sister’s voice from my sleep and I slowly opened my eyes, only to see her smiling at me.
“How the fuck did you get in here?” I asked, surprised, I recalled the instructions I gave to my guards and I knew they would never go against it.
“Your windows are always open,” Ava said, sitting at the edge of my bed.
My mouth fell open, realizing that my sister had climbed up to four floors before getting to my room. She had done it before so I was not so surprised.
“What is the problem, Ava? I want to be alone,” I said, yawning, rubbing my eyes with my hands.
“You are sleeping when the pack is in big trouble; how do you think, Burke,” Ava said, almost yelling.
“How did you know that? Were you at the meeting?” I asked tiredly, and she shook her head in response.
“Everyone in the pack knows of the syndrome, and they are walking around wearing a nose mask not to inhale it,” She said, and I wasn’t so surprised; news always spread like wildfire in our pack.
“Do you know the cure?” I asked, wanting to know how much information the pack members had heard.
“The blood of an Alpha and his Luna, everyone knows that too,” Ava stated, and I hated the fact the people knew that too, they would think I was selfish, if I didn’t give them a Luna and I would don’t like that, I don’t like been hated by my people or been the Villain in my pack.
“There’s no Luna anywhere Ava; this happened at a really bad fucking time,” I said, and Ava laughed sarcastically.
“I get the fact that you loved Catherine with all you had, but she’s gone now and she would want you to move on Burke, can’t you see it?” Ava said, and I’m not sure she was right about that. If Catherine wanted me to move on, I wouldn’t be feeling this mate bond, but I didn’t tell Ava that.
“I can’t just pick a girl to get married to Ava, I need to have known her before even if it’s a little, marriage is a long time and I don’t want my second marriage to end like the previous one,” I said, trying to give an excuse but Ava didn’t buy it though.
“There’s someone you have a history with; she’s someone you can marry as well,” Ava said, and I looked at her in surprise.
“Who you could that be?” I asked, searching for the answer in Ava’s eyes.
“Me,” I heard a familiar voice say.
I turned to the direction where the voice came from and I saw Harley coming out of my closet.
Harley is standing at my front, the fucker who killed my best friend.
