CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
CATHERINE’S POV
I have been avoiding Burke since after the kiss, he has not seen me. When he knocks at my door, either I’m in the garden with Ethan or taking a stroll, Burke either comes too early or too late to my room, so he doesn’t see me.
I ended the kiss that day after Fifteen minutes of making out. I yelled at Burke and ordered him out of my room to kiss me, he left without complaining.
That is not the reason I have been avoiding him though, the fact that I’m still thinking about the kiss and wish for it to happen again, is the reason I have been avoiding Burke. I have cheated on Jaxon once and won’t want to do it again.
My lust for Burke is missed with the betrayal of Jaxon. I have betrayed Jaxon and would have to come clean to him when I get to Chicago, but that’s the most difficult thing to do.
“Mam your food is burning,” Susan said, she is a maid that is working for Burke.
She had initially offered to cook my meal but I rejected her offer. I had always loved eating the meals I cooked, besides it was just making pancakes which was not much of a problem.
“Shit,” I yelled, running to the oven to switch it off.
The pancakes were already colored black making me exhale in exhaustion, Burke had caused this disaster in the kitchen without his knowledge. How wish I was thinking straight, I wouldn’t have burnt these pancakes.
“Would you like to dispose of it ma,” Susan asked, as I dropped the burnt pancakes on the kitchen cabinet.
“Yes please,” I said sadly, because I would go back to my room with an empty stomach, something I had always hated to do.
Susan took the pancakes and thrashed them in the wastebasket before Harley rushed in confused.
“Did you just throw your pancakes?” She asked, confused, making me wonder how she knew I was making pancakes.
“Yes, how is that your problem?” I asked, trying not to be rude, even if we weren’t on talking terms, and I was even the cause of the quarrel.
“You don’t waste food like that?” She said, sadly, she was turning from left to right to be she was not heard by someone which was rather surprising of Harley, she is not someone who cares about what people think, except he is Burke fucking Michealson.
“This is not your house, you’re just here forcing yourself on Burke, I’m his guest so I’ll do whatever pleases me,” I said, sounding harsh, she had no right to lecture me about waste.
“You don’t waste food like that Catherine, even if you are a guest, you need to know boundaries,” Ava said, coming to stand between Ava and me.
Ava was getting on my nerves and I almost forgot she was way younger than me, exchanging words with her would be childish.
“If it bothers you, pick the pancakes from the trash can and have a bite of it,” I said angrily, leaving Ava and Harley in the kitchen.
I was getting tired of staying in this Mansion, But Ethan had not recovered fully. Ethan was the only reason I held back my desire to go and stay with Burke, even if it seemed like I was likely to cheat on Jaxon with Burke.
I walked to Ethan’s room, with Susan at my back, she had been my maid ever since, I got poisoned with a dress, although I still think there is something fishy about the poison, firstly it was unknown and secondly, it did not do any damage to me except for making me faint. That wasn’t how Poisons worked, but I couldn’t place my hand on the fishy aspect, so I kept silent.
I sat on the edge of Ethan’s bed, holding his wrinkled palms on my sweaty hands.
“I am tired of being here, Ava doesn’t even make it easier,” I said and paused for a response from an unconscious body, without any response, I continued talking.
“She sides with Harley all the time, I get that they are best friends, but Ava gets sassy at times and it gets me upset,” I complained to Ethan, like he could do something about Ava’s behavior.
“Please get well soon, I don’t want to stay here anymore,” I complained further.
I took out my stethoscope, to see if he was in the right state and he was, luckily he was even getting better, until I noticed something.
“Hope nobody is allowed to enter this room,” I asked Susan as I discovered something unusual in his system, someone had been tampering with the drips by putting something into it, probably poison.
“No ma, not that I know of,” she replied to my question, confused.
I need to tell Burke about this sudden change, which means I have to see him which is not happening anytime soon. But I can’t allow Ethan to die.
I turned to Susan and said,
“Make sure you tell the Alpha that Ethan’s drips had been tampered with and we need a new one,” I said, to Susan who stood there perplexed.
“Ma, we aren’t allowed to talk to the Alpha, we were just mere servants,” She said, giving me a slight bow.
Shit, I forgot that they can’t tell the Alpha information directly, I would have sent her to Ava or Harley so they can tell Burke, but I don’t trust any of them. Burke was the only trustworthy person even if he broke my heart.
“Oh, I’ll let him know then,” I said, but I did not have any intention of letting him know.
Soon I was done with Ethan’s Diagnosis, I left his room and also dismissed Susan to the maid’s quarter, I did not like stressing her out.
Soon I was walking down the hallway, heading to my room when I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around immediately but found no one.
I continued walking but at a slower rate, when suddenly I felt someone close my mouth and drag me into a nearby room.
“You are avoiding me Cat,” Burke’s husky voice whispered into my ears and I shivered.
