CHAPTER SIX
CATHERINE’S POV
My eyes stayed glued on Burke, and I could not believe my ears. I know Ethan had always been sick but he is a hard man to kill, he had fought both humans and sickness all his life before Burke became Alpha.
“I don’t understand”, I said, after finding my voice.
“They said he is sick but no one knows what was wrong, I have called all the doctors from across and within the country but no one seemed to know what the cause of his illness is” Burke explained, and for the first time I have known Burke, I could see fear and Vulnerability in his eyes, he did not want to loose his father because he still doesn’t know how to be Alpha.
“Trust me, I never wanted to bring you back to the pack, because you are living your best life, but I had to, you are the only doctor I haven’t invited, and the best in the country,” he said, and I won’t lie, I felt butterflies in my tummy upon hearing him rain praises on me.
“That patronizing, thank you but what if I can’t cure him? What then?” My voice was far from being angry as I spoke. I was more concerned about Ethan’s recovery, his death would create another huge hole in my heart, so I’d have to prevent it.
“All I’m asking is that you try, I cannot allow him to die, at least not at this point”, he replied, with his hands folded on his chest.
Part of me wanted to ask him what was happening at that point, but I ignored that aspect, the pack was in chaos, but that was no longer my business because the pack was no longer my home.
I also wanted to ask about Sereca, his Luna. Seeing them together while I find a cure for Ethan, would be difficult, it has been years yet the pain is still fresh like it happened yesterday.
“Sereca is not going to be around, you can rest assured that you won’t see any distractions,” he said as if he had been reading my thoughts,
I cleared my throat and tried to appear unbothered, before responding to him.
“I don’t care what goes on in your marital life” I stated, but my heart contradicted my voice, I wanted to know what happened to her, and their children. Probably they went to visit their maternal grandparents since I was coming along.
“Then you won’t have left the pack in the first place” Burke stated rudely before snapping his fingers together, thereby ordering the guards to come back in, meaning that was the end of our discussion.
“I did not leave because of you and Sereca” I lied.
“Of course you did” he stated sarcastically, before turning his back to leave, I wanted to talk more but he had already gotten into another conversation with one of his guards who kept stealing glances at me, and was talking in a hushed tone, making me wonder what they were discussing.
Then Burke left me inside the mansion, with his guard coming towards me.
“I will show you to your room mam,” He said, and his face looked familiar, this was the guy that was with me in the car back in Chicago, I instantly hated him.
“You think I don’t remember you huh?” I asked, because of how polite we were acting, meanwhile he acted like an asshole back there in Chicago.
“I know you do,” he replied with a smirk, which increased my anger, although I ignored and followed his directions to my room.
After taking the stairs, I landed in my room, it used to be Burke’s room seven years ago, I remembered playing there and I also remember my last night here I don’t think I’m going to ever forget.
“We helped you get your purse from your office, please don’t ask how,” he said and left me in the room perplexed.
“How the hell did they get access to my office without raising suspicion?” I asked myself, knowing something was off.
The room was well furnished with my favorite color Blue, Burke did not forget that at least, besides that, the wardrobe was filled with clothes, female clothes that were all my size, it appeared they were prepared for me.
I collapsed on the bed wondering how my kids and Jaxon were doing. I hate the fact that I’m not at home, and there was no means to reach them.
Suddenly I heard a knock at the door and I got off the bed to get it, only to see Burke’s sister, Ava looking at me with those puppy eyes. She had grown so much that I could hardly remember her.
“Catherine, welcome,” She said, giving me a tight hug.
“Thank you Ava” I replied, pating her hair gently.
“Please save him, Catherine,” She said, after withdrawing from the hug.
I cupped her face into my hands, although my face did not cover any part of her face.
“I will save Ethan,” I said, trying to give her hope, although I did not know how I was going to save him, and if it was even possible because other doctors had tried.
“Thank you, I’ll be on my way,” she said, waving goodbye and I did the same. There was a girl she was walking with, and she had the maids that belonged to the Luna of the pack, making me wonder where Sereca was. I did not ask though.
I entered my room, to freshen up and get to see how Ethan’s condition was and how I could start treatment.
Within six minutes, I was done bathing and I was wearing blue shorts and a white shirt, my hair was packed in a messy bun, and my face was free from any makeup, that was when I remembered that I had lipstick in my purse.
My lips felt dry, so I reached for my purse to get the lipstick when I found a letter in my purse, it was from Jaxon.
I ripped the letter open and it read;
I sold you out to Burke for your safety and told them how to get you but they promised not to hurt you. I’ll take care of the kids for you just do what he wants Cat.
“Jaxon sold me out?” I asked myself unbelievably.
