CHAPTER FIVE
CATHERINE’S POV
“Untie me now, Burke”, I said trying to appear brave but deep down, the fear gripped my heart tightly, and I could not feel my breath again.
Burke walked to my front, I lifted my head to look at him, he had changed so much, his physical appearance was more appealing than before, and he looked more like a man now. A grin appeared on his face making him even more handsome, with the dimples on the left side of his cheeks,
“I will untie you,” he said, using his hand to brush his black hair backward, which appeared to be a failed attempt as the hair settled back on his forehead. His deep voice brought me back to reality, and I realized I was still tied.
“Ok then, do it,” I said, trying not to yell, Burke has an intimidating appearance, that is rubbing off on me and I don’t know why.
“But you will promise you won’t run away like you did before,” He said, as he bent to the height of the chair where I was seated.
I looked into his hazel brown eyes, the warmness, gentleness, and peace had now been replaced with coldness and wickedness, I did not know what happened to him or his Luna, but I knew he was in pain, although that is the least of my problem, I need to get back to my children.
“I can’t promise that Burke,” I said, staring at the ground, I had no intention of looking into those cold eyes of his, looking at him made me remember my last night in the pack and the day he broke my heart, the only joy he gave me where my children, which he knew nothing about, and will never know anything about.
“Then I’m sorry Cat you….”
“Catherine” I interrupted Burke before he could finish his statement, he looked at me surprised about the audacity I had, to interrupt him.
“What did you say?” He asked, acting confused.
“My name is Catherine, only my friends call me Cat,” I said, trying to best not to allow the tears blurring my vision to flow down.
“I am your Friend, we never stopped being friends,” Burke said, getting up to his feet, he stared at the wall, like there was invisible writing there.
“No Burke, you were my friend, we stopped being friends that night,” I said, with my voice breaking already, but I tried not to cry, I didn’t want Burke to see me broken.
“Why? Because the moon goddess gave me my mate, the night after we had sex?” He asked like the night meant nothing to him.
The tears I held flowed down helplessly, as I looked at the cold-hearted man, that was once my best friend.
“You knew she was your mate before that night but yet you chose to take advantage of me, and I was your best friend” I yelled, the anger I felt was not because I hated him, it was because I could not bring myself to hate him, after all these years.
“It’s more complicated Catherine,” He said, coldly. Then he looked down at me disgustedly,
“Don’t let people see you like this,” he said, gesturing to the tears I had on my face.
I hated the fact that I was crying in his presence, and my hands were tied, I could not wipe the tears off, so tried using my shoulder.
“Untie her and leave us alone,” he said to one of his guards, immediately my hands were freed and Burke and I were alone in the living room of his mansion.
“Do you think my Fiance, will allow me to sleep outside home for a day? The police will be coming after you because he knows about the letter you sent” I said, trying to find confidence in my words, but the truth is I don’t know how Jaxon would react to this.
Jaxon would have guessed that Burke had taken me and probably would not want to involve the police into my pack, because the policemen would certainly not survive it. I purposely did not talk about my children, because I didn’t want him to know anything about them.
“You look different from the last seven years,” he said, and for a second I felt conscious of how I looked.
I had always imagined when I would see Burke again, that I would look very beautiful and hot, but fate had taken a turn and I looked like Thrash, standing in front of me, my clothes were messed up and the makeup I wore was all over my face making me look like a masquerade.
“In a positive way though” he added, as if he noticed how self-conscious I became.
“So do you,” I said, regretting it a few seconds later.
“Of course I do” he scoffs, and my anger grew, I folded my hands beneath my breast, looking at him angrily, he didn’t even have the courtesy of saying thank you.
“I did not call you back to make amends for what I did seven years ago,” he stated, and his harsh words sent a sharp pain to my heart immediately, I felt like punching him in the face but I could not bring myself to do it, he is too intimidating.
“I don’t want you to make amends, it will be useless, because I’m living my life to the fullest all thanks to what you did to me” I retorted, trying to act unbothered.
Burke cleared his throat before giving me a look from head to toe, “you sure are living your life to the fullest” he said with a chuckle, and the comment sounded sarcastic but I ignored him.
“What made you invite me to the pack then? Besides, where is Ethan?” I asked, looking around for Ethan, Burke’s father, who retired from being Alpha because of his sick state.
Ethan has always been a father to me as well, and I love him, but he doesn’t know why I left the pack or what Burke did to me, and I don’t want him to know, he will hate Burke, that’s not something that would make me happy.
Burke kept me silent for a while, making me wonder what happened to Ethan, he was the closest to a father when my foster parents died, and I don’t want to lose him.
“Can you talk to me?” I asked, getting impatient already.
“He is going to die soon Catherine,” Burke dropped the bombshell, making my heart stop for a second.
