EVOLET
“How did you know Cadell?” I asked Mom, as we both sat on the bed in her room.
After settling that problem at the forest, the guys escorted us back to the hotel, which looked quite abandoned due to the chaos. They didn’t take long before heading back outside to handle some important things, leaving we ladies behind.
I followed Mom into her room, curious to know where and how she knew Pervy Wolf.
And he even knows her name. That’s something i’ve never heard in a long time.
“How did you know Cadell as well?” Mom threw that question back at me, making my face flush.
“It’s a long story,” I responded, flashing to the first time I met him outside the Alpha’s mansion.
“Well, mine is also a long story, way older than yours,” she said, giving out a sigh.
“It was during the time of hardship in Wolf Fall.”
I stared at her, noticing the faint smile that curled up her face.
“The time when the Queen first saw him as a rogue. But in my eyes… He was a dear friend.”
“A friend?” I uttered, still locked on Mom.
“It was at this period the late Luna Violet was killed. The whole werewolf pack was at war with other creatures, fighting to claim dominance over the other. That was the time we got closer to the Dark Blood, who made us a part of his world… mostly you,” she said, smiling at me.
I felt my heart glow when she said that.
“That poor wolf had nowhere to go because of the chaos. He was considered Wolf Fall’s foe by the Queen, who desperately wanted something from him.”
“The Sorceress created a force field that would help them in tracking Cadell if he crosses it, and that’s how he came to your father and I to hide away,” Mom added, causing my heart to ache at this.
“We were the only ones who could help him, because of you. And that’s because the Queen was trying to snatch the gift inside your body,” she said, pointing at my necklace.
For her to touch what Cadell created to hide my power, I knew right there that Mom had all the answers to the questions I promised to get from Cadell!
“This is the answer I was looking for. I was wondering how father got the necklace if Cadell was the one that created it and… Gosh!” My hands went across my face. The information was too much to handle.
“You can tell me all that happened back then, Mom. How did I end up with the late Queen’s power? Was it Cadell that gave me something or…” I was overwhelmed, thinking of all the things to ask her.
Mom, who watched on with smile, asked, “Have you asked Cadell these questions before?”
“No, not yet. I wanted to, but…”
“Then I can’t take that risk of giving you the answers.”
“What? Why?!” I exclaimed, watching Mom put and invisible zipper on her lips.
“But why?! You’re here and you know all that happened. Please, I’m begging you,” I joined my palms together, falling on my knees right in front of her. “Just tell me, Mom.”
“Evolet, it’s a no. Unless Cadell tells you himself, I won’t,” she stood her ground, rejecting my request.
I groaned at this, lowering my head before her.
“I won’t be the one to unleash that beast in you. I will not allow that mistake to repeat itself.”
“Wait, what mistake?” That statement surprised me.
I lifted my head to look at Mom and met her brow lifted. She smirked and said, “You said you added a wolf to your necklace, but I know quite well that this is your third necklace from Cadell. You must have lost your cool or something.”
“Third?!” I rose to my feet, widening my eyes at Mom.
What does she mean by third?! This is my second necklace!
But her expression said the opposite.
Now I was really desperate to know the story behind my first necklace.
“Please, please, PLEASE!!” I begged, burying my head on her laps. “Just tell me this one alone, and I promise not to ask any other question. Please!” I cried.
I heard Mom laughing at me. She patted my head and said, “Oh, the hunger in your eyes. It’s better and calmer than the time you were two years old.” She laughed, killing me with the suspense.
Mom soon agreed, calming my racing heart.
I sat right there on the floor, as she narrated how I lost my first chain.
“You were just two years then. So small and stubborn. It’s either we find you making a mess or playing with Cadell,” she chuckled, probably flashing to that moment.
“It was a raining night and Cadell wasn’t back from wherever he went. You woke up from your sleep and wouldn’t stop crying. Oh, you cried and cried and cried… It made your father and I worried,” she said, slowly drifting into sadness.
I saw it in her eyes. It made me feel upset with my smaller self.
“I tried to comfort you but you wouldn’t let me. Even your father struggled to keep you calm and it was the same result. Gosh, it was so terrible.”
“So little me was a bad girl? Aww!” I frowned, feeling awful.
Mom smiled and assured me that I wasn’t. “You were only little and couldn’t understand a thing.”
I hummed at her response.
“It was troubling for us because we couldn’t do a thing. The only name you kept calling was Cadell. And we knew if you didn’t see him that night, we won’t rest. Oh, you wanted him so badly that you wouldn’t stop screaming.”
My face flushed at this, leaving me embarrassed.
“With that cute voice, it was his name you sang. And that’s when you lost it and your powers broke the necklace around you. It was the first time you unleashed your beast and almost brought down the house.”
My mouth dropped on hearing that part.
“We would have lost our home if Cadell hadn’t stepped in quickly and held you in his arms. He calmed your spirit and placed another necklace on you to seal your wolf,” she smiled, demonstrating how pervy wolf held me close.
“You stopped and began laughing. It was beautiful to watch,” she giggled, patting my head.
I think it’s extremely beautiful.
I’m surprised that little me has been craving Cadell back then. The bond was really wild.
“He decided to stay around and watch over you to prevent that accident from taking place again, but… I think that decision drew him away from us,” Mom said, switching into sadness again.
“What do you mean?” I asked, having a bad feeling on seeing her face.
That’s when Mom, who slowly had tears welling in her eyes, told me something that I never knew occurred years back.
“You were already growing up and attaching to your parents, and Cadell played his part in visiting. But one night, a guard came over and demanded for the Rogue.”
On hearing that, I began to recollect some things from my past.
I think this was on the night I last saw Dad. That’s when Mom came back and… Goddess!
“Was that the same night father…”
“Yes,” Mom answered, sniveling.
“It’s the same night I lost my husband to that horrible Queen!” she cried, shocking me to the core.
Mom explained that the guard had seen Cadell leaving our home that very night and came to eliminate us. He took father’s life while protecting Mom.
Cadell came back when he sensed the trouble and took out the guard so the Queen wouldn’t find out about us.
“But it shattered him. Cadell felt guilty for my loss and couldn’t face me any more.”
“Mom,” I called, getting off the ground and pulling her close into arms for an embrace.
I felt the pain and tears flowing inside me.
I never knew.
“He was hurt. I got mad and angrily yelled at Cadell, and he blamed himself for what happened. He felt worried about our safety and just left. And that was the last time I saw him.” She sniffed, pulling herself out of my hold.
“It became hard for me. I had no one to share my pains or lean in for support. It was so hard to bring you up on my own.”
I now understood where her bitterness came from.
The loneliness ate Mom up. She became the grumpy emotionless lady who always stood in my way and made things hard for me.
No wonder she hated the Royal family. My Dad left us because of them.
“You grew up having no memory of Cadell. I felt choked by this and prayed to the goddess to give me strength. And sometimes when I sit outside or look at the night through my window, I always felt like he was watching somewhere in the dark,” she said, finally breaking a smile, while I wiped off the tears from her face, hurt by her tears.
My heart was aching terribly. The emotions were getting to me.
“When I began hearing rumors of the rogue resurfacing again in Wolf Fall, I knew he was back for us.” She cupped my face, switching into happiness.
“He came back, and… and I felt a bit relieved, waiting for the day he’d show up to meet his Evolet after so many years. But who knew that my daughter’s so-called Wolf was actually Cadell? Who knew?!”
She laughed out, tapping my head hard.
“Mom!” That pulled me out of the strong emotion I was getting. She killed the vibe!
“I’m sorry, but you deserved it,” she sniffed, wiping her eyes. “You were crying and I had to snap you out before something bad happens. I won’t be the cause of your outbreak.”
Yeah, a nice way to keep the feeling from exploding.
“But you lied to me,” she frowned, getting all serious.
“Oh boy.”
“You had a man, no… Two men in my house, disguised as pets, to fool your own mother!”
“I swear to the heavens that I didn’t plan it! I… I had no choice! Cadell is the one who came up with the idea! And Trent… He’s just a sweet Alpha who ended up in the same web. Please don’t be mad,” I pleaded, drawing away from Mom.
Suddenly, she busted into laughter, making fun of my reaction.
I frowned when I saw this, but also chuckled.
“It’s okay, I’m just playing with you. Come here.” Her arms came wide opened to receive me into her embrace.
I dived into Mom’s hold, feeling a brand new bond engulfing us both.
“I’m not mad, Eve. I’m just happy that you had them around. They are the reason why my stress was taken away. I am so happy.”
“Really?”
“Yes. And to be fully honest, I left the pets back because I was suspicious of your behavior.”
Is she serious?
“You were always talking to them and I felt you were either going insane or hiding something from me. Well, at least we know,” she chortled, squeezing me tight.
Finally, my mother is expressing felicity after so many years of trapping herself in a cage. The key was Cadell all along and I never knew.
My mind went to the moment Mom held Cadell tight, crying out her heart. Pervy Wolf had embraced her and apologized for hurting her.
I saw the guilt in his eyes when he apologized three times.
Now I know.
As Mom and I were bonding, I immediately remembered Derby, who was sitting all lost in the other room, thinking about what happened.
“Derby,” I mentioned, pulling myself out of Mom’s hold. “I need to talk to her. She’s down at the moment.”
“I saw the shock in her eyes. Go talk to her. Meanwhile, I need to reach the tailor and ask about the pets.” She smirked cunningly, taking out her phone.
Mom’s funny side planted a smile on my face.
I left the room and went into the other to find Derby.
There I met her standing close to the window, gazing out to the night.
Drawing near with my hand falling on her shoulder, Derby shivered and turned to face me. Her face came brightening with a smile, trying to hide her unhappiness. “Evolet, I didn’t see you there.”
“Are you okay?” I asked, staring at her dull face.
“I’m not sure. I don’t even know,” she responded, crossing her arms.
Understanding how she must be feeling, I carefully took Derby to the bed and began to apologize to her for keeping her in the dark.
“I was worried about your reaction, if you ever knew the truth about the guys. Mostly, I was thinking about Trent. You… You like him a lot and…”
“You didn’t want to hurt my feelings by revealing he’s a Werecat and an Alpha? I get,” she said, nodding her head.
“I’m sorry, D. I really am,” I said, taking Derby’s hands in my hold.
She looked at me and managed to force a smile out, saying while looking back at the window, “Evolet, I’m not mad at you for hiding all these from me. I can understand the danger you’re facing for possessing such powerful gift. And the guys are protecting you safe from it.”
“I heard you and your Mom mentioning Queen Chriselda and Sorceress Thelma’s name. They are the ones who are after you.”
“Oh, you heard us.” My head dropped a bit, watching a dull Derby nod.
“It’s sweet to know that you have something cool in you. Honestly, it’s awesome,” she smiled lightly, caressing my hands.
And as she switched to her sad side, Derby shared what was really troubling her. “I’m only pressed with the fact that Trent is the same Werecat you fought. He’s also my Kitty Cat.”
“Which is still okay, right?”
“Evolet, I’ve kissed Kitty so many times. That means I was kissing Trent!” She panicked, losing it.
I immediately intervened and told Derby to be calm. “It’s no big deal. You just gave him a friendly peck and that’s all.”
“ARGH!” She groaned, falling in bed and covering her face in shame.
“You won’t understand how hard it is for me, Eve! It was okay when he was just the guy who always runs away from me when I act crazy and soon became my friend because I thought he was a werewolf like me…”
“Okay, slow down.”
“But he’s the Alpha of a pack! Meaning I have been around him and… Oh Goddess!” She screamed, hitting the pillow.
“I can’t believe I’ve been acting like a fool in front of a king! No wonder he was creeped out that day. I can’t show my face any more! Never!” She gave out a cry, causing a tantrum.
“Derby stop that!” I forced her off the bed, shaking her out of it.
“You are overreacting. Trent is a great guy. He doesn’t see you as a weirdo but his close friend.”
“But he’s an Alpha.”
“Same as Allen. But that asshole doesn’t have what our Trent does. Werecat or not, he’s an awesome guy. And I know you still love him no matter his kind. Am I right?” I asked, cupping Derby’s face.
She sniffed and nodded, admitting to her feelings. “I do love Trent.”
“See.”
“And I think he’s super attractive now that I know he’s a Werecat. He looks… hot,” she said, blushing.
I wanted to laugh at Derby, but I didn’t want her feeling embarrassed again.
She then gave out a sigh and asked, “So, should I start calling him Alpha or your majesty?”
“Don’t do that, please,” I refused, swaying my head.
“But he’s an Alpha! I don’t know what to call him!”
“Oh God, Derby calm down!”
It might take a while, but she’ll get a hang off it.
