24. Resignation
Kim didn’t even know what had happened.
The last thing she remembered was boarding a taxi, giving the driver the address where she wanted to be taken and shutting her eyes and then, the next thing, she woke up tied to a chair in the middle of a very big room that looked as if it was an empty godown.
There was no sign of life near her and it was eerily quiet.
She tried wiggling but she was securely fastened in the chair she was seated on and it was like the chair had been welded to the floor because it also didn’t move.
Kim tried to think of anyone she could have annoyed to such an extent that they would take her and the only person that came to mind was that lady who had come calling in Ely’s house.
“So, at the end of the day,” I was to get in deep shit because of him,” Kim thought and laughed self-deprecatingly.
Then again, if she had stayed out, nothing of such sort would have happened.
So, at the end of it all, she had herself to blame. Again, another chuckle escaped her lips.
She thought of screaming and then decided against it. If someone had brought her to such a place, it meant that they were sure that there was no one near the godown who would save her.
So, she was only left with one option, sit tight and pray.
She prayed that Ely would notice her missing and start looking for her.
“That is, if I mean anything to him,” she thought.
For all she knew, she was just a sexual tool for when she was available. She wondered if Ely would go to any lengths to look for her.
“So, am I going to die here?” She wondered.
As she was lost in the sea of thoughts, she heard the doors click open and she decided to pretend that she was still out of it.
She heard people come in and from the footsteps, they were two men due to their heavy footsteps.
“Do you think Elyes will come?” One man asked.
“Our boss said that he values this woman and he will be here. Let’s wait for a while longer,” the other one said.
“What if he doesn’t?” The first one asked.
“We kill her and feed the sharks. We can’t have her going back and telling on us,” the other one answered as a matter of fact.
From the way they were talking, Kim could tell that they were veterans and killing someone wouldn’t be a hard task for them.
“Yes. But not before having our fill. She is very beautiful. You have to agree that he knows how to choose. If I have to say, she is even more beautiful than our boss’ sister,” the second one said and they started talking about other things.
Kim chanced a look at them and that was when she realized that they were dressed for a fight.
They had on military grade boots and pants that had several side pockets that seemed full of weapons. They had on well fitting t-shirts and on top of that they had on bullet proof vests and around that was a bullet belt that went on to a rifle that each was carrying.
If she didn’t know that these were kidnappers, she would have thought that she had been brought to a military base.
“How long will it take?” The second one asked.
He seemed to be the younger of the two and thus had little patience.
“It doesn’t matter. We got paid and we have to make sure that we finish our duty. Let’s wait. The spy in Elyes’ house said that they are on their way. So, any minute now.
Once they get here, the team outside will give us a signal and we will take our places. Remember, if we are successful, we can go abroad and take out families with us. So, let’s make sure that we do it well,” the elder one said.
“I hope so. I am needed by the police and going abroad will make me a free man. That means that….” Bam!
He didn’t even get to finish when he fell down with a bum and both Kim and the other man were surprised.
“Hey! Hey! What’s wrong with you? Did they give me an epileptic partner?” The other one asked as he shook the one on the floor and then he stiffened.
On his fingers, there was blood.
The other man had been shot on the head and there was blood.
It was just that he had fallen on his stomach and the blood was yet to flow outside the range of where he had fallen and it had taken a while for the other one to see it.
“Damn it!” He said and stood up ready to bolt and he didn’t even take one step before he also fell down.
This time, Kim saw it clearly.
The bullet came from nowhere and hit the man at the temple and he fell without a word.
If she was afraid before that, she was now frightened. She didn’t know who it was that had taken those two out and she wondered if she would be next.
She felt like crying. She wondered why she would die so young and the way she had tried to live a good life.
She had been a virgin and had just started having sex less than a month ago and she hadn’t even enjoyed life yet.
She also had elderly parents to take care of and her dad had blood pressure and diabetes and she couldn’t bear to leave the burden of taking care of him to her mother only.
“I don’t want to die,” she mumbled to herself wishing for a miracle.
As she looked towards the door, she saw several men, she counted ten in her state, walk in and their stance was that of people who were ready for anything.
“Clear,” one man said after taking a 3600 turn around the large hall.
Then, one man walked towards her and knelt before her and then went to remove the mask he was wearing when he froze.
“Kimberly? Kimberly Chen? What are you doing here?” He asked and felt stupid seeing that she was tied to a chair and she was the woman he had been tasked with saving.
“Gulf?” Kim would know that voice from anywhere and anytime.
Hadn’t she been in love with him for years?
