The answer was already in Rosalind’s heart, but she still wanted to hear what her son had to say.
Jake furrowed his little brows, looking conflicted. He pouted and sighed, “If he never bullied you before, then I like him! He’s very nice to me! But… but if he bullied you before, then I can’t forgive him!”
Rosalind smiled, “He never bullied me.”
“Then why did you two separate?” Jake had always imagined Ulric as a playboy who didn’t care about anything but having fun, causing his mommy to leave heartbroken despite loving him deeply and even having his children.
But after living in Ulric’s house, Jake realized he was nothing like the irresponsible father he had imagined. Ulric came home on time to cook for him, postponed meetings to help him with computer systems, and countless times at night, Ulric would come into his room to tuck him in. Jake knew all of this!
The more he saw this, the less he understood why his mommy took him and his sister away. He thought that if his sister were here now, Ulric would love her just as much.
“Jake, there were many adult reasons why Mommy and he separated. You can’t understand them now, but remember this: your father is a very good man. He’s gentle, caring, and loves his family and children dearly.”
“Can’t I know? Mommy, maybe I can help you!”
Rosalind recalled what Malcolm had told her earlier about Jake’s impressive computer skills and considered letting him try to recover evidence. But after a moment’s hesitation, she chose not to say anything.
Jake was already different from normal kids his age-he thought too much and worried too deeply. If the footage showed his mother being harmed too graphically, it would scar him for life.
Rosalind didn’t want to sacrifice her son’s mental health for revenge.
“Good boy, sleep now! Mommy can handle it herself.” She gently patted her son until he closed his eyes and seemed to drift into sleep, though his hand still clutched her sleeve.
When Ulric entered the room, Rosalind had also fallen asleep beside their son.
The day’s tasks at the company had been heavy, and the recent emotional strain had exhausted her.
Ulric quietly approached and gently lifted Rosalind into his arms, placing her comfortably on their son’s bed so she could sleep soundly.
He then sat beside her, holding her hand, greedily absorbing her warmth as if only by touching her skin could he feel real.
Ulric let out a long sigh, a faint smile on his lips.
As he adjusted his position slightly, his foot accidentally knocked over Rosalind’s bag. Documents and manila envelopes spilled out-new project materials from the company that Rosalind intended to review at home.
Ulric began gathering the scattered items when he noticed a photo lying face down on the floor. He picked it up.
The photo showed Rosalind holding two children-a boy and a girl-one on each side.
Ulric’s dark eyes fixated on the girl with two pigtails. He froze completely, forgetting even to breathe.
This girl… wasn’t she the little one who pouted and asked him to buy candy in Wayer City?
Was she his daughter?!
