“I don’t want to,” Callie replied quickly. “I still need to investigate, unless I can completely confirm that Reuben has nothing to do with these people.”
She was confident. Jaquan raised an eyebrow. “What do you have to fight them with?”
“I have evidence of illegal activities in Dragonstone.”
Upon hearing this, Jaquan’s brow furrowed sharply. He covered her mouth and pressed her against the wall, lowering his voice. “Are you crazy? How dare you say that here!”
Callie mumbled a few sounds and retorted softly, “So what if I said it? It’s illegal anyway. I bet your Sky Pavilion has plenty of shady dealings too. If you push me too far, I’ll send you to the police as well!”
She was like a little wolf cub that would bite. Jaquan chuckled, “Go out and ask around. Which entertainment venue doesn’t have some dirty secrets? How about this, don’t ask others, just ask Nelson if he has any.”
Mentioning Nelson made Callie fall silent, her expression turning somewhat pitiful.
Jaquan looked at her, feeling a mix of bitterness and discomfort. “Would you really send him to the police?”
“No,” Callie answered honestly. “He must have his reasons.”
Jaquan laughed angrily and pinched her face. “You’re quite the double standard.”
Callie looked up and saw something remarkable.
A man walked around the corner, surrounded by others. He wore gold-rimmed glasses and had an air of cold nobility. Just as he was about to look over, Callie immediately pulled Jaquan’s tie, forcing him to bend down and press his face against hers.
When Jamir looked over, Jaquan was already covering Callie, making it impossible to see her.
Jamir quickly looked away and walked off into the distance.
Jaquan grunted softly, his thin lips pressed against her cold face. For a moment, his eyes darkened and his heart pounded like a drum.
After two minutes, once she was sure Jamir had left, Callie pushed Jaquan away and leaned on her knees, gasping for breath.
She almost suffocated!
Jaquan stood there, seeing her panic-stricken face, and mocked, “Your heart is beating so fast. Who did you see? Is there someone in Anbusea you’re afraid of?”
Callie ignored his mockery and didn’t want to explain that her heart was racing out of fear.
She walked out. “I told you, scarier than ghosts.”
On the first floor, the music continued. Jaquan followed behind her, his voice particularly clear. “Could it be an ex-boyfriend?”
Callie straightened her back, unwilling to admit it.
Jaquan glanced around the room and quickly spotted a noble figure leaving the venue. He only saw the side of his face but had a hunch. “It really is an ex-boyfriend.”
Callie glared at him fiercely. “Why do you talk so much!”
She didn’t see the bitter smile that flashed across Jaquan’s face. In this world, it seemed everyone could have a past with her except him.
He had to admit that fate in this world ultimately followed the rule of first come, first served, and he was always a step too late.
Just one step too slow, and everything was lost.
At the door, someone approached them. It was Scarface. He saw Callie first and exclaimed, “My sister-in-law is here too.”
Callie almost exploded with anger. “I am not your sister-in-law.”
Scarface looked troubled but then walked over to Jaquan’s side to report something important. After listening, Jaquan walked a few steps away to discuss it further.
Seeing this, Callie had no desire to stay any longer. She walked out along the road and called Kieran to come pick her up. However, she didn’t notice a tall figure quietly approaching from behind. The person knocked her phone out of her hand before she could scream, covered her mouth, and dragged her away!
