After getting off the plane, Nelson’s people had already arranged the vehicle. Callie’s first destination was the hospital where Reuben used to work.
The black Porsche drove out of the underground parking lot like a blade being unsheathed. Callie sat in the leading car, and Kieran personally asked, “Madam, what if Jaquan follows us?”
They were still unsure of his purpose in coming to Anbusea.
Callie looked ahead at the night scene of Anbusea. “He isn’t that bored or kind-hearted to help me find Reuben.”
Kieran nodded.
They soon arrived at Anbusea First Hospital. The dean, who had received a last-minute notice, hurried to the entrance to greet them. “Mrs. Oconnor.”
Callie was somewhat surprised. “You know me?”
“Mr. Oconnor informed us. Please come in.” The dean led the way to his office and poured her a glass of water. “It’s a long trip; what can I do for you, Mrs. Oconnor?”
As he spoke, he kept observing Callie, trying to discern any illness.
Callie smiled slightly. “I’m here to inquire about someone.”
“Who?”
“He was once a surgeon at your hospital, named Reuben Marsh.” As she spoke, Callie handed over a medical license with Reuben’s photo on it.
The dean adjusted his glasses and looked at it carefully, frowning.
Callie had a bad feeling.
“Mrs. Oconnor, this person worked here over ten years ago. I was transferred here only ten years ago, and with so much time having passed, I don’t remember him.”
It was not good news.
Callie clenched her hand. “Please help me check his records at the hospital. I want to know why he left.”
“Alright.” The dean agreed and made a phone call.
After about half an hour, the dean went out and returned with a file.
“Everything is in here.”
Callie eagerly opened it and found that during Reuben’s tenure, he had performed many major surgeries and published numerous academic papers. However, his career abruptly ended after three years. The last line read: Dismissed.
The reason was a major medical accident.
There were no detailed descriptions, just a brief mention.
“I checked; after that, his license was revoked.”
So the family moved to Ylosea without a stable job.
Callie looked at the young face of Reuben in the file, unable to understand what injustice he had suffered.
The Reuben she remembered was steady and experienced; it was unlikely he would suddenly have a major medical accident unless something really happened.
“Are there any staff from over ten years ago still at the hospital?”
The dean thought for a moment. “The older ones have either been promoted or retired… Oh, you could find the former dean. He should know the whole story.”
“Where is he?”
“As far as I know, he’s still in Anbusea and somewhat influential. It should be easier to find him, but getting information might be difficult.”
Despite the dean’s words, Callie wasn’t afraid; as long as there were clues, she would try.
The dean didn’t know the exact address, so Callie contacted Nelson.
In just ten minutes, Anthony sent a message: Mike Mack, head of Dragonstone in Anbusea South District.
Callie understood and was about to turn off her phone when another message from Anthony came through: Madam, Mr. Oconnor reminds you to stay safe.
