The two families had harbored animosity for a long time, which was why Scarface was so hateful.
As soon as the words were spoken, Jaquan kicked Scarface in the stomach, “Bark again and I’ll kill you first!”
“Jaquan, don’t get angry.” During the movement, Nelson suddenly noticed a crease on his shoulder, a mark left by a woman leaning on him.
He reached out to Charlotte, who promptly handed him a box of cigarettes. He took one out and gestured to Callie with a lighter, indicating for her to light it.
Her nerves were tense, and she didn’t take it.
Nelson’s lips curled slightly, “Light it.”
She hesitated before taking it, and with a click, the flame illuminated the man’s sharp features.
The smoke filled his lungs, and Nelson exhaled deeply, his nerves relaxing a bit.
He hadn’t smoked in a long time. He had promised to quit and hadn’t touched a cigarette since then. Tonight was the first time.
“I’m not angry.” Jaquan took the tissue handed to him by his subordinate and wiped his fingers. “But have you changed your secretary? I didn’t see Anthony today.”
The focus shifted back to Charlotte.
Now holding the status of the eldest daughter of the Ellison family, she no longer appeared humble and looked at people calmly.
“Secretary?” Nelson followed suit. “By the way, you are still her brother-in-law.”
Jaquan raised an eyebrow but didn’t deny it. “Yes, but I wonder if there will be a chance to become your brother-in-law in the future.”
The implication was clear, and Nelson’s expression changed.
Charlotte stepped forward first. “Mr. Scott, you are being excessive.”
Callie was still here.
“Whether he’s excessive or not, it is what it is, Miss Ellison. I don’t know if today you are…” Callie couldn’t bear to watch the scene any longer, holding back her anger until she couldn’t anymore.
She locked eyes with Charlotte.
From being tough, Charlotte gradually softened. “I…” She wanted to speak but didn’t dare, sneaking a glance at Nelson’s expression.
The cigarette glowed red at Nelson’s fingertips, his face growing increasingly sinister.
“I’ll say it for you.” Callie had already guessed most of it. “Lowering yourself to work at Oconnor Group, does it diminish Miss Ellison’s status? But since you’ve reached this position, shouldn’t you do your job well?”
“Did you tell Mr. Oconnor what I asked you to convey?”
She had guessed that the call she made to Nelson was answered by Charlotte.
When Anthony was around, he rarely answered Nelson’s personal calls. Charlotte was quite capable.
Charlotte appeared weak under Callie’s strong questioning, as if she were being bullied.
Nelson stood in front of Charlotte, looking more like a protector.
The cigarette was almost finished when he spoke. “She told me about your call.”
Callie was interrupted and looked up at Nelson’s face, understanding that he was protecting her.
After a moment, she sneered. “So she did tell you. I misunderstood Miss Ellison.”
Charlotte hurriedly explained, “I answered the call because Mr. Oconnor was busy with something important…”
“Shut up.” Nelson spoke, but his eyes remained on Callie’s stubborn face. “Since she has guessed everything, there’s no need to explain.”
“Nelson…” Charlotte anxiously blurted out his name before realizing it was too late. “Nelson…”
This only fueled Callie’s anger further. She smiled and nodded. “Indeed, no need to explain.”
Nelson stubbed out the cigarette.
At that moment, applause sounded from behind. It was Jaquan, stepping forward. “It seems I really do have a chance to become the brother-in-law.”
Callie turned and threw her bag at him. “Are you crazy? Rushing to become someone’s brother-in-law!”
With that said, she strode inside under Nelson’s gaze.
