“Is the Oconnor Group planning to reorganize the design department?” Callie asked tentatively.
Nelson’s hand around her waist loosened slightly. “You found out.”
“To be precise, they are planning to reorganize the construction enterprise, which will inevitably include the design department.”
Callie frowned. “The real estate market in Ylosea is already saturated. Didn’t they say they wouldn’t pursue this area anymore?”
Nelson’s gaze was meaningful. “Plans change. The real estate market may be saturated, but profits never are. The Scott Group has been affected, but they still have seven construction sites waiting to start. Once they resume, they’ll make a sure profit.”
So the Oconnor Group wanted a share of that.
Callie understood and smiled wryly, remaining silent for a moment.
Nelson played with her long hair. “What’s wrong?”
“I’m scared, Nelson.” Callie looked him in the eyes, her honesty evident. “It was the first time I saw someone die under the rubble. It was too horrific. I don’t want to see such things again.”
In other words, she didn’t want him involved in anything like Jaquan.
But she also knew that Nelson had risen to power over the years by being involved in gray area. Completely avoiding it was almost impossible.
Nelson looked at her silently, his expression indifferent, and spoke calmly.
“I promise you, such things won’t happen, even if Jaquan wants to fight me.”
Though his words were calm, they were firm, making Callie doubtful for a moment. “Are you just comforting me?”
“I promised you I wouldn’t lie to you anymore.”
Callie smiled, believing him.
She felt much better and no longer worried about whether the reorganization of the Oconnor Group’s construction enterprise would affect her studio.
“By the way, what were you going to say earlier?”
Her smile was lively, like a pear tree blossoming at night, fresh and pleasant.
Nelson gazed at her face almost lovingly. For a moment, he couldn’t bring himself to say what he had planned.
“It’s nothing important. I forgot.”
Callie didn’t doubt him and winked at him. “I’ll go take a bath then.”
The woman’s smooth figure slipped away, leaving Nelson empty-handed. He watched her go upstairs with a half-smile that faded as she disappeared from view.
An hour earlier, Ahmad had called to apologize. After some pleasantries, he got straight to the point. “You know Maevelyn’s special status. It’s not appropriate for her to suddenly join the company now. She has always relied on you and trusts you. Why not let her work by your side?”
Clearly, Ahmad’s intention was to ‘plant a spy.’
“Mr. Ellison, Oconnor Group is not a place for idlers.”
“I know, but Maevelyn is different. I know you’ve taken care of her since she was young.”
“She just cried. Did you say something to her?”
Nelson gripped his phone tightly. “Mr. Ellison, have her come to Oconnor Group tomorrow.”
With that, Ahmad achieved his goal and hung up satisfied.
Anthony, who had overheard some of it from the front, asked worriedly, “Is it a bad idea? If Madam finds out…”
The man closed his eyes. He owed Maevelyn, and Ahmad had taken advantage of that.
After a long pause, he said in a deep voice, “Starting tomorrow, you’ll be reassigned to the secretary’s office. Focus your work on the construction enterprise.”
Anthony was stunned.
“You mean… you’re going to keep Miss Ellison close?”
“The Ellison family wants it; I’ll let them have it. Whether she can handle it remains to be seen.”
