Chapter 701: Holding the Photo Tight

Book:Married The Day We Met Published:2025-2-7

Callie left the studio, and before leaving, she turned to Regan, “Do I care about him? I care about when he dies!”
The thought of Jaquan messing with her recently made her furious.
Back at Paucaster Villa Complex, Reuben was having dinner. Nancy saw her and quickly took her coat, “Madam, you were out for just two hours.”
“Yes, I was handling some small matters.” Callie approached the dining table and glanced at Reuben’s meal, “What are you eating?”
Her eyes shifted and she saw Reuben holding a photo frame tightly, looking absent-minded. “Reuben? What are you holding? Reuben?”
She waved her hand in front of him, and Reuben finally snapped out of it, “It’s your photo, Callie.”
Callie was surprised, “A photo? What photo of mine?” She didn’t remember having any photo framed.
Nancy hurried forward with a troubled expression, “Madam, ever since you left, he’s been holding this photo and won’t let go. He keeps saying it’s your photo, no matter how much I explain.”
Callie frowned. Since Reuben woke up, his memory had been poor, and he often got confused. She didn’t take it seriously.
“What photo?”
Nancy hesitated for a while before whispering something in her ear.
Callie’s face changed dramatically. She immediately stepped forward to take the photo, “Reuben, give me the photo. This isn’t me; you’ve got it wrong.”
But Reuben held onto the photo tightly and got a bit angry, “What are you talking about? This is my Callie. Don’t touch it!”
Callie became more anxious, “It’s not me! Callie is right in front of you. Look at me, wake up! Dad!”
Reuben wouldn’t let go and seemed to think she was trying to take it from him. His eyes were unfocused and he looked even more confused.
“Dad!” Callie pulled harder, but due to the force, she fell backward. The photo slipped from Reuben’s grasp and fell to the ground with a crash.
The frame shattered, revealing the original photo.
Callie’s heart trembled. The little girl in the photo was smiling brightly. For some reason, she suddenly felt a pang of sadness. She moved forward to pick up the photo, but cut her hand on the glass, blood flowing out.
Nancy was shocked, “Madam! Don’t touch it!”
The sight of blood seemed to wake Reuben up. He snapped back to reality and hurried to help Callie up, “Callie! What are you doing? Get up!”
Callie didn’t move.
At that moment, a deep male voice came from behind, “What’s going on?”
Nelson had just entered and saw the chaotic scene. Seeing Callie crouched on the ground, he took large strides forward, “Callie?”
As he got closer, he saw what she was holding. The bright red blood stained the photo. Callie quickly used her sleeve to wipe it off and looked at him in a panic, “I’m sorry, Nelson. I didn’t mean to.”
It was a look of both appeasement and fear that Callie rarely showed. It made Nelson’s heart ache. His fingers trembled as he stopped her from wiping further, “Don’t wipe it.”
Callie stared blankly and then said, “My dad didn’t mean it. He was just confused. I didn’t mean it either. Don’t misunderstand.”
Once, Nelson had seen this photo and had a huge outburst, leaving Callie with a shadow in her heart. She knew how important this photo was and was scared.
Nelson felt a mix of emotions stirring inside him. He took the photo from her hand gently, “Callie, this isn’t important.”
“Stand up first and let’s take care of your wound.” He coaxed softly.
