Chapter 700: The Woman Under Nelson’s Protection

Her words reminded Nelson of that endless rainy day.
He closed his eyes, as if he could still see Maevelyn reaching out to him through the pouring rain, like a beam of light in his life.
Later, she appeared before him under a different identity, and he didn’t recognize her. He used his means to drive her away, causing her great humiliation.
“Maeve,” he suddenly said.
Charlotte listened.
“Stay well with the Ellison family, be the lady you are meant to be, and marry a man of good character. I will look out for you. Is this smooth life what you want?” He looked into her dark eyes and asked seriously.
Charlotte looked back, a hint of sadness in her eyes. “You and I, we missed each other.”
People are like this. When they don’t know each other’s identity, they are aware of their social classes and won’t have unrealistic desires. But once they remember the past, it’s easy to feel unbalanced.
Nelson didn’t respond.
“I still remember the night before I was supposed to start middle school. You promised to show me around the campus and assured your grandpa you would protect me. But in the blink of an eye, we didn’t see each other for over ten years, and we both changed.”
She could recount past events, awakening Nelson’s long-buried memories, as if she were the Maevelyn from back then.
Nelson picked up the cigarette box on the table, took out a cigarette, and lit it without smoking.
“The boy who was once so close to me, we still missed each other, didn’t we, Nelson?”
The ash almost burned his fingertips before he flicked it away gently.
“Maeve, we’ve grown up. I owe you something, and I will try my best to make it up to you in the future,” he said with a slight twitch of his brow.
“That’s not what I want, Nelson. You know that. It has never been about that.”
Nelson had almost no way out. “What do you want?”
After a long stare, Charlotte just shook her head and said nothing more.
Nelson looked outside. The lively scene beyond the door was completely out of place with the atmosphere here. He said, “Find a good man in the future. Don’t choose someone like me.”
Charlotte forced a smile. “What kind of man is considered good?”
“He should have good character, a good job, some wealth, and he and his family should genuinely treat you well,” Nelson thought carefully and explained to her.
“I’m not worthy of such a good man.”
Nelson’s eyes gradually darkened.
That time, he suspected it was she who sent Callie the photos. He deliberately took her to Club Paradise to humiliate her. Although it didn’t happen in the end, the humiliation was real.
She remembered it to this day.
“I was joking, Nelson,” Charlotte immediately smiled as if she didn’t mind.
Some wounds, once inflicted, can never be taken back.
“What happened before will not happen again.”
Nelson’s voice was light but firm.
“But once conflicts arise, you might still find it difficult,” Charlotte saw clearly. “Nelson, that’s why I won’t cause trouble for you. I never did before, and I won’t in the future.”
A cigarette burned out, and Nelson never took a puff. Until he left the banquet, Ahmad called him, “Nelson, sorry for not entertaining you well today. Don’t take it to heart.”
He left early, and Ahmad quickly found out. His attitude was very accommodating, and his private intentions were obvious.
