Callie was curious about why Nelson had such close ties with the Ellison family. At first, she thought it was due to marriage alliances.
“Why is that?” she asked.
Nelson leaned back and closed his eyes to rest. “Five years ago, the Ellison family’s project touched on a gray area and almost got them into trouble. It was the Oconnor Group that stepped in and took the blame for them.”
Callie thought for a moment. Five years ago… “But now there are many things in the gray area, including you and Jaquan. You both have involvement.”
It was just not out in the open; behind the scenes, it was all dirty business that couldn’t see the light of day.
“That time was different; it involved a life.”
Callie frowned. “How did you take the blame?”
That incident involved a significant person, and the authorities wanted a thorough investigation. Ahmad sought help from many people in a short time but couldn’t cover it up. At the critical moment, Nelson provided evidence of the deceased’s illegal activities. As the authorities investigated, the Ellison family’s responsibility diminished.
After that, Ahmad owed Nelson a huge favor.
Five years ago, Nelson had just started and was young when he became the executor of Oconnor Group. Everyone was waiting for him to fail, but unknowingly, he had connected with the Ellison family.
Ahmad appreciated young people with courage and wisdom, and Nelson was one of them.
In just a few years, he had developed Oconnor Group into Ylosea’s largest taxpayer. Although the two families didn’t form a formal strategic partnership, they relied on each other and were indispensable.
So Nelson’s relationship with the Ellison family wasn’t just a simple bond between juniors.
“But at that time, you had no backing or power. Where did you get the evidence?” Callie lay on the bed, resting her face on her hands as she listened to the story, puzzled.
Nelson remained mysterious. “It’s all in the past.”
Seeing that he didn’t want to elaborate, Callie guessed on her own. “Could it be that you actually set up the Ellison family to get involved in that incident so you could come to their rescue?”
He smiled calmly. “In your mind, I seem to always be quite dark.”
“Yes,” she admitted frankly. “You are that kind of person-resourceful and ruthless.”
“And what about Jaquan? What is he like in your mind?” Nelson suddenly asked, catching Callie off guard. “Do you want to know?”
He neither confirmed nor denied it.
Callie turned over and rested her head on his lap. “Cold, does things quietly, makes people afraid.”
Not exactly flattering descriptions, but Nelson was satisfied. “Who is more ruthless, me or him?”
A boring question. Callie closed her eyes to sleep, not wanting to answer.
Nelson gazed at the woman under the light. Her skin was smooth, pure and unblemished, with an easily readable aura that could calm a man’s emotions. That’s why he loved her.
No wonder Jaquan was attracted to her.
The next day was the Ellison family’s welcome banquet. Callie didn’t want to go but made her stance clear. “I know you can’t refuse, so go ahead. I’ll wait for you to come back.”
She even had the mood to pick out a tie for him, comparing options.
“How about black? It suits you.”
Nelson grabbed her wrist. “Not angry?”
“Why would I be angry? Unless you don’t love me.”
She understood him perfectly, but her calmness made Nelson unhappy; he even wanted her to throw a fit.
“I’ll just make an appearance and come back quickly.”
Callie withdrew her hand and smiled. “Alright then, I wouldn’t mind if you never came back.”
Sarcastic.
Nelson smiled, feeling better, and left for his car.
