Not long ago, he was arguing loudly with her about materials, and in the blink of an eye, he was dead.
Callie bent over to the side, unable to recover for a long time.
Jaquan quickly walked up and questioned, “It’s New Year’s Eve, what was he doing here?”
“I heard he was worried about the project and wanted to check on it. After dinner, he went for a walk and ended up nearby…”
After explaining, no one spoke.
For a moment, no one knew whether to say he was diligent or if his time had simply come.
After a while, Jaquan closed his eyes briefly. “Before dawn, clean up the scene and notify his family. Offer them compensation and hush money.”
“… Yes.”
Callie listened to the entire conversation. She finally straightened up and looked at him with cold, empty eyes. “And then?”
Jaquan looked at her from a distance, his whole demeanor cold and lonely. “In this world, some lives can be bought off.”
Such a realistic and cruel statement made Callie feel nauseous again.
Her expression was complex. “What about my silence? Can you buy that?”
“What about my life? Can you buy that too?”
Callie’s fierce words stunned everyone present. Large tears rolled down her face. She was extremely upset; in her heart, Elisha was a very dedicated team leader.
When they worked together, his employees always said he was good and never delayed paying the workers.
Although they had argued over different ideas later on, Callie didn’t think it was his fault.
That was a life!
Upon hearing this, Jaquan’s eyes, cold as stars, looked at her for a long time. He suddenly took off his hard hat and gestured, “Come with me.”
He walked far ahead, his tall figure becoming small in the vast space.
Callie took a deep breath and followed him.
Seeing her follow, Jaquan opened the car door. Inside were gifts prepared by Mikayla in advance. The latter handed over some documents. “Mr. Scott, all of Elisha’s information is here.”
Jaquan glanced through them quickly and understood. He nodded, “You can go back now.”
Mikayla was nervous. “Let me go instead. If you show up, things might get worse.”
“No need, you keep an eye on public opinion.” Jaquan turned to Callie and gestured, “I’m going to comfort the deceased’s family now. Do you want to come?”
She looked suspicious. At the moment, she could only follow Jaquan; he was in charge of everything.
Jaquan drove himself from the side road to the main road. On New Year’s Eve, most streets in Ylosea were deserted. Callie sat in the passenger seat, looking very pale.
Neither of them spoke.
After driving for an unknown amount of time, they finally reached a busier area. Callie looked up and saw the sign: Ylosea Third Hospital.
She frowned tightly. “Why are we at the hospital?”
Jaquan got out of the car and took out the gifts from the trunk. “Elisha has a son with cancer. The family spent all their savings on treatment. His wife is staying at the hospital for New Year’s.”
Callie was shocked; she hadn’t expected this.
“Do you know why he becomes a contractor? His son’s illness is like a bottomless pit; it needs money to fill it.”
Jaquan walked ahead while speaking. “Taking on projects is risky; they all gamble with their lives.”
His legs were long, and he walked fast. Callie had to jog to keep up.
“He could have lived and earned more medical expenses for his family!”
“Is that what they think?” Jaquan retorted.
Callie was momentarily stunned.
