“How is your friend doing?” Tobias asked.
Callie was momentarily stunned before realizing he was referring to the psychologist she had introduced to Regan. She scrutinized him, ensuring he didn’t know Jamir’s background.
“Better, that psychologist is indeed a miracle worker. Your friend has been a great help.”
Tobias nodded. “That’s good. He’s a financial genius on Wall Street, and psychological counseling is just his side job, but he’s completely trustworthy.”
It seemed he knew Jamir’s background well; Jamir hadn’t hidden anything from him.
Callie pondered, “How did you meet him?”
“Well… we’re sort of alumni,” Tobias recalled. “A couple of years ago, I had a patient who needed a consultation abroad. He was one of the family members. We hit it off immediately and became friends over time.”
So that’s how it was. Callie couldn’t be sure if Jamir had intentionally approached Tobias, but it certainly seemed suspicious; otherwise, it wouldn’t be such a coincidence.
“Alumni?”
“Yeah, didn’t you know? He was once a prominent figure at Ylosea University. Unfortunately, by the time I went there as an exchange student, he had already gone abroad for further studies, so I missed witnessing his heyday.”
Tobias seemed somewhat regretful as he said this.
Callie remembered that her first meeting with Tobias was indeed after Jamir had left.
Her expression was unreadable as she thought it was just as well Tobias hadn’t witnessed that period. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to hide the fact that she was Jamir’s ex-girlfriend.
“What’s wrong?” Tobias asked when he saw her silence.
Callie noticed Reuben coming out of the restroom and shook her head. “Nothing, I should go. Tobias, see you next time.”
Tobias nodded and glanced down the hallway. “I hope our next meeting isn’t in a hospital.”
Callie smiled.
“I’m living quite well in the place you rented for me. It’s convenient for Old Mr. Oconnor to visit me too, why should I move?”
In the car, Reuben heard Callie’s words and immediately expressed his dissatisfaction.
“What’s good about that place? It’s quiet, yes, but it’s on the tenth floor. Every time Grandpa visits you, he has to take the elevator. It’s too much trouble. Just live with us; it will be more convenient for Grandpa to see you.” Callie struggled to come up with an excuse, unable to tell him that the person who rented the place had turned against her.
“What’s wrong with taking the elevator?” Reuben didn’t understand.
“… It… it wastes time!”
“You child…” Reuben waved his hand dismissively. “Staying with you for a few days is fine, but I can’t live with you all the time. I’m not used to it.”
Seeing this, Callie lied, “That’s fine too. If you really can’t get used to it, I’ll find another place for you.”
Only then did Reuben relax his guard.
When they arrived at Paucaster Villa, the servants had already prepared the room.
Reuben had been an ordinary person all his life and had never experienced being served by servants. Moreover, the house was huge, with not just a garden but also a lake at the back, and the environment was excellent.
He didn’t show any signs of happiness; instead, he seemed somewhat melancholic.
That evening, after finishing her wash-up, Callie went to keep Reuben company and found him staring blankly on the balcony.
“Reuben, what are you thinking about?”
Reuben snapped out of his daze and looked at her. “Callie, everything now feels quite unfamiliar to me.”
Callie was taken aback and understood what he meant. “Do you think I’ve changed?”
Reuben waved his hand. “It’s not you who has changed; it’s my mindset.” He gestured for Callie to sit down. “How about him?”
It was clear who he meant by ‘him.’
Callie sat across from Reuben. “He’s on a business trip in Ylosea.”
