“Exactly, Elisha, you’re generalizing. We work in the office and also run field projects,” Callie said with a smile, taking a bite of her meal.
“My bad, my bad, I was short-sighted,” Elisha quickly apologized. As he looked up, he suddenly saw a car stop outside the construction site, and someone got out.
The person was tall and looked quite different, walking straight towards them.
Elisha squinted his eyes, and as the person got closer, he finally recognized him. He almost dropped his lunch box. “Mr. Scott!”
Callie was eating her meal. Upon hearing this, her hand shook, and she felt a chill down her spine.
Soon, a familiar voice came from behind, “I was out on business and thought I’d drop by. Having lunch?”
Realizing who it was, Callie didn’t dare to turn around.
“Everything is going smoothly here. Mr. Scott, would you like to take a look?” Elisha found a safety helmet and tried to hand it to Jaquan.
Jaquan didn’t take it immediately. Instead, he handed something to Elisha. “Ylosea’s local cuisine. I bought it on my way here. Share it with the guys.”
Elisha quickly took the bag and called out to the crew, “Mr. Scott is treating us today!”
Jaquan stood behind them without moving forward. Amid the commotion, Callie tried to leave with her lunch box, but Elisha noticed her. “Callie, I remember you’re from Ylosea. Come join us.”
Callie’s back stiffened.
She slowly turned around and met Jaquan’s gaze. He raised an eyebrow playfully.
“The local cuisine from Green Garden is indeed good. Mr. Scott has good taste.”
In a corner of the construction site, Callie and Jaquan stood together. She tasted a piece of meat and nodded in approval.
“Why are you personally overseeing this? Can’t you delegate this to your subordinates?” Jaquan’s words implied that he had just found out she was at the construction site, suggesting their meeting was coincidental.
“Of course not. I drew the plans myself; I wouldn’t trust anyone else with them,” Callie replied with a sidelong glance.
“You are quite responsible.”
Jaquan’s words didn’t sound like genuine praise.
“My designs are expensive, Mr. Scott. Make sure to settle the final payment promptly.”
There was no one she knew around, so Callie felt more at ease and joked with him like a friend.
She had some rice on the corner of her mouth, which Jaquan wiped away with his hand. “How could I dare delay your payment? I’ll make sure to settle it first.”
The gesture was too intimate, making Callie stiffen for a moment. But Jaquan quickly withdrew his hand, leaving her with nothing more to say.
“Then I’ll thank you in advance, Mr. Scott.”
“Do we have to be so formal? You weren’t like this before.” Jaquan placed his hands on the railing, looking at the construction site with a hint of melancholy in his voice.
Callie felt awkward but maintained a mischievous facade. “We’re on opposite sides now. If I overstep, your wife will tear me apart. I don’t want any trouble.”
Her playful expression made Jaquan chuckle lightly. “I recently got some news. Charlotte has been sent away.”
Callie paused her spoon in surprise. “I didn’t know.”
Jaquan seemed to realize something. “So you didn’t know. It seems Nelson really cares about you.”
He had quietly sent Charlotte away to draw a clear line for Callie’s sake, acting decisively.
“Where was she sent?”
“I don’t know, probably Anbusea. Charlotte is from Anbusea.”
