Dale’s face turned grim, and he didn’t touch the tea again.
Callie wasn’t angry; she bypassed him and continued with her tasks.
Dale stared at her back in a daze. This girl, though she did nothing and said nothing, already exuded the aura of the future mistress of the Oconnor family.
Nelson really showered her with such affection!
The meeting lasted two hours, and by noon, everyone dined together.
Callie sat with the staff from the secretary’s office, avoiding any high-profile interaction with Nelson.
But Nelson was displeased. He glanced at her intentionally or unintentionally, somewhat unhappy, as if to say, why care about others’ opinions?
Callie smiled and, under the table, discreetly hooked his long leg with hers.
The faint tickle and the sense of taboo almost overwhelmed them.
He sent a message on his phone: If you dare, come sit next to me.
Callie replied: I don’t dare.
Nelson wasn’t angry anymore. Some senior executives spoke to him in low voices, and a few of them moved to the office. Callie watched his tall and broad back, feeling very satisfied.
She went to the break room.
But not everyone liked her. Some employees who had long coveted Nelson gathered together, full of incomprehension.
“Isn’t the Oconnor Group against office romances? How can Callie marry Nelson?”
“Yeah, I remember Callie was just in the design department before.”
“Who knows what means she used to hook up with Nelson, even making him abandon Marilyn. She’s no ordinary woman.”
A few women whispered together, each holding a cup of hot coffee, their tones filled with jealousy and dissatisfaction.
“Now that she’s Mrs. Oconnor, she left the Oconnor Group to avoid being criticized of using connections.” One of them sat in a swivel chair, crossing her legs.
“But now she’s back, still ambitious.”
Callie leaned against the corner, listening to them gossip about her relationship.
“Hey, she’s not even that stunning, and there are plenty of women with better figures. What does Nelson see in her?”
They couldn’t stop talking.
At this moment, Anthony happened to come to the break room. Hearing bits of their conversation, he exchanged a glance with Callie and was about to intervene when Callie raised her hand to stop him. She shook her head.
“Well…”
Callie turned around and entered first. She poured herself a cup of hot water, her unhurried demeanor leaving them momentarily stunned.
She said nothing, but they almost couldn’t breathe, unsure how much she had heard.
“When I joined the Oconnor Group, neither Nelson nor the company had such achievements,” Callie said calmly, meeting their eyes. “Now that Nelson is successful, I have to leave the Oconnor Group to avoid suspicion. No matter how you look at it, I’m the one at a loss.”
They didn’t dare breathe heavily, realizing Callie was explaining herself.
“But… but you became Mrs. Oconnor,” someone replied bravely.
“You must have seen plenty of news over the years. Do you really think being Mrs. Oconnor is easy?” Callie responded lightly.
In recent years, there had been many trending topics about Mrs. Oconnor. She herself had been criticized a lot, and only recently had there been a few positive reviews, which were rare.
Not to mention that when she first got together with Nelson, she was practically a pawn used by various forces.
