From the moment Ben showed his medical talent, Nelson provided him with the best resources and learning opportunities. Whether it was studying abroad or developing his career back home, all the funding came from Nelson.
Before Ben went abroad, Nelson called him over, not as a friend, but as a superior. He said to him, “You have great potential.”
Nelson considered him one of his own, and in a deeper sense, he was exclusively his.
But this person, whom Nelson had personally nurtured, was nowhere to be found when he needed him most.
Ben was mentally prepared. “The patient’s life was in danger at that time. I had no choice. You can punish me.”
Nelson seemed indifferent. “How is he now?”
Callie quietly went about her business. She knew very well what to involve herself in and what to avoid when dealing with this man.
Ben answered truthfully, “He’s fine now.”
Nelson looked at the tea set on the table with a calm expression. “Saving lives is a doctor’s duty. It was an emergency, so I can’t blame you.”
These words sounded very forgiving. Outsiders might even call it magnanimous, but everyone present was tense. Ben’s lips were pale, and he almost knelt down. “It was my fault.”
Nelson frowned. “Stand up straight.”
“Why are you so nervous? I’m just asking you. No need to kneel.”
Ben stood up straight.
“It’s just that, if my people are saving others when I’m in need, how can I trust them?”
This was the real point.
At this moment, their true identities were revealed. They might look like friends on the surface, but in reality, Ben had no qualifications.
It took Ben a while to speak. “From now on, I will always prioritize you, Mr. Oconnor.”
Callie’s hand paused as she poured tea, steam rising in delicate wisps.
Nelson smiled. “No need. I’m not one to force people. Since you’re working at the hospital now, it’s your duty to be diligent.”
“Yes…”
Nelson showed a satisfied smile. “Callie is very weak. Prescribe some medicine to help her recover.”
“Yes.”
This was Nelson’s terrifying aspect. He instilled fear without raising his voice. Just standing silently in front of you could make people afraid.
After Ben left, Callie changed her clothes without looking up and said to Nelson, “I need to talk to you.”
The man paused slightly before following her.
In the master bedroom, only a wall lamp was lit, casting dim light. Callie and Nelson sat facing each other, scrutinizing one another. After a moment, she took a deep breath and finally made up her mind. “Have you been with another woman?”
Nelson immediately frowned at this question.
For an adult man, such a question was redundant.
So Callie added, “I mean, after we got married, have you?”
Nelson’s frown deepened as if he found the question absurd. “No. Since marrying you, there has been no one else.”
He answered decisively.
Callie couldn’t explain why, but she felt relieved. She nodded and took out her phone, scrolling to the message page and handing it to Nelson. “Then what is this?”
She decided to be open and honest.
Nelson’s eyes turned dark and brooding as he saw the content on the screen.
