The girl was Nathan’s sister, the daughter of Wayne. It was said that she had been studying abroad for years and had only recently returned.
She had a close bond with Nathan, and when she learned of his death, she cried for two straight weeks.
Now, upon hearing that the person who killed Nathan was staying in her house, she didn’t hesitate for a second. She came straight to kill Kayden and avenge her brother.
But her attempt failed the moment she made her move.
“Do you want to avenge Nathan?” Kayden asked in a calm tone.
“Yes,” Audrey replied bluntly. “I’m here to avenge my brother. A life for a life. You killed my brother, and I demand yours in return.”
As she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes.
“But you can’t kill me,” Kayden said, his voice still calm. “You can’t even hold a knife steadily. How do you plan to avenge him?”
The calmer Kayden sounded, the more aggrieved and frustrated Audrey felt.
This man was truly arrogant. He had killed her brother and was now living peacefully under her roof. Worse, the head of the household even treated him with utmost respect.
“None of your business!” Audrey snapped. “If I can’t kill you today, I’ll try again tomorrow. If I fail tomorrow, I’ll try the day after. As long as I keep at it, I’ll succeed one day.”
Kayden suddenly flipped her over, pinning her down on the bed. He leaned in close, his eyes locking onto Audrey’s startled ones.
“You can’t even dodge a single move from me,” he said coldly. “Do you really think you can kill me?”
Audrey opened her mouth to retort, but before she could speak, a knock came from the door.
“Commander, I heard some noise in your room. Has someone entered?”
The voice belonged to Fletcher Atkinson.
Kayden didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he kept his gaze on Audrey, whose eyes now held a hint of fear.
“If I tell him,” Kayden said in a low voice, “that his niece tried to kill me with a knife, what do you think he’ll do? Will he expel you from the Atkinson family? Maybe even your parents too?”
Audrey swallowed hard. She could leave the family if she had to, but her parents couldn’t. They had dedicated their lives to the Atkinson family. If they were cast out, where would they go?
As she hesitated, Kayden finally spoke to the person outside.
“Nothing to worry about,” he said casually. “Just a little mouse. I’ve already taken care of it.”
“Yes, sir,” Fletcher replied. “Rest well, Commander. I’ll stand guard tonight. It’s been a while since I’ve had the chance to do so, and I’ll consider it an honor.”
Kayden seemed like he wanted to say something but chose to remain silent.
He looked back down at Audrey, then his gaze instinctively shifted for a moment to her chest.
“What are you doing?” Audrey demanded, feeling his heated gaze. She squirmed uncomfortably.
Kayden chuckled. “What do you think I’m doing? We’re alone in this room, and if I decided to do something to you, I doubt you’d even scream.”
“How dare you!” Audrey’s eyes widened in shock. “Don’t you dare touch me! I’ll scream!”
“If you scream,” Kayden said nonchalantly, “I’ll simply tell Fletcher you tried to kill me. Then we’ll see how he deals with you and your parents.”
His words poured over her like a bucket of cold water.
Biting her lip, Audrey glared at him and muttered, “You bastard.”
As if that wasn’t enough, she suddenly noticed something different about him. Her face flushed bright red, all the way to her neck.
“You… You pervert!” she shouted, shoving him off her with all her strength and quickly sitting up on the bed, her face still burning.
How could he behave like this?
This man always carried himself with an air of superiority, commanding respect wherever he went. Yet here he was, pressing her down, revealing an entirely different and shameless side of himself.
Audrey felt a confusing mix of anger and embarrassment. She had never experienced anything like this before, and it left her flustered beyond belief.
Kayden seemed to understand her accusation. With a helpless expression, he said, “You can’t blame me for this. It’s a normal reaction for a man when provoked by a woman. You’re the one who barged into my room and tried to stab me.”
“So you’re saying your perverted behavior is justified?” Audrey shot back indignantly.
Kayden flopped onto the bed with a sigh. “In any case, it’s not my fault.”
“Hmph! Pervert! Every second I spend with you makes me want to kill you even more!”
With that, she turned to leave.
But after only a few steps, Kayden’s voice stopped her cold.
“You’re not leaving this room now,” he said calmly.
“I-” Audrey started to argue, but when she looked up, she realized he was right. She couldn’t leave. If she tried, Fletcher would surely question her, and that would only bring trouble to her parents.
Frustrated, she blurted out, “Who were you calling a little mouse earlier?”
Kayden didn’t even look at her. “Whoever you think the little mouse is.”
With that, he lay back on the bed with a satisfied sigh.
“Hey!” Audrey hissed, watching him relax. “What are you doing? I’m stuck in your room, and you’re just going to sleep?”
Kayden gave her an exasperated look. “You came here to kill me. You failed. Now you can’t leave. What else do you want me to do? Keep you company?”
Audrey pouted. “You could tell my uncle to leave.”
“No.” His answer was firm.
Audrey huffed and crossed her arms. “Fine. Go ahead and sleep. Once you’re out, I’ll kill you. After all, I’m already in your room. I can strike whenever I want.”
“Alright,” Kayden replied with a yawn. “I’ll sleep now. Wake me up when you’re ready to try again.”
He turned over and closed his eyes, leaving Audrey speechless.
This was the simplest room in the entire Atkinson family estate. It had only a small table and a bed, which wasn’t very large but could fit two people if necessary.
Audrey looked at the bed and smacked her forehead.
“Audrey, what are you doing?” she muttered to herself. “You’re here to kill him, not to share a bed with him.”
