“What do you mean by that?” Georgia swallowed hard, her voice trembling as she looked up at the old man. A dreadful premonition began to creep over her, and she felt her hands and feet grow icy cold.
Billy sighed deeply and said with a meaningful tone, “I know this will break your heart, but this is the young master’s decision. He asked me to tell you that he has decided to return and take over as the head of the family. A few days ago, he also got engaged to Miss Whitley. As for your marriage… he thinks it was a mistake from the very beginning.”
Boom!
To Georgia, this news was like thunder crashing down on her.
The teacup in her hand slipped and fell to the ground with a loud smash, tea spilling across the floor of the car.
“No!” Georgia shook her head in disbelief, her voice filled with agitation. “I don’t believe it. I don’t believe this is Kayden’s decision! You’re lying to me! You’re lying! Kayden would never leave me. He told me-he told me I’m the one he loves most in this world. He said I’m his only family. He wouldn’t leave me, and he wouldn’t do something like this behind my back. You’re lying!”
Tears welled up in Georgia’s eyes, threatening to overflow. Although her words were filled with denial, her heart was already in chaos. She couldn’t think straight; she was beginning to believe what the man in front of her was saying.
Billy’s expression turned serious. “Mrs. Scott, I understand how hard this is for you. After all, you’ve been married to the young master for three years. But this is his decision. Not just anyone can take on the role of the Scott family head. Since he’s been chosen, he has no choice but to accept it.
“Moreover, this is his father’s dying wish. I’m an old man-I have no reason to lie to you about this. The young master didn’t want to say this to you himself, so he asked me to deliver the message, Mrs. Scott.”
Billy paused before continuing, “The young master also wanted me to tell you this: these past three years have been the most peaceful of his life. Through you, he experienced an ordinary life and came to understand its essence. He truly liked you, but reality won’t allow him to continue that life with you. A simple life doesn’t belong to him-he can’t have it.”
“Mrs. Scott, do you understand what I’m saying?”
Billy’s words came out in one breath, swift and unrelenting, like ripping off a Band-Aid. Prolonging the conversation would only make the pain worse. Better to get it over with quickly.
Hearing those heart-wrenching words, Georgia’s tears finally overflowed, streaming down her face.
She bit her lip and shook her head, refusing to believe it. She couldn’t believe these words had come from Kayden. She couldn’t believe he would do such a thing.
How could he betray her? How could he get engaged to another woman without even telling her?
He loved her. He had acknowledged their marriage. Why? Why would he do this?
Hadn’t he promised to make her the happiest woman in the world? Hadn’t he said he would make her a queen, the rightful lady of Seclela?
Why? Why was he doing something so cruel now?
Could it be that everything he had done was just to repay her for protecting him these past three years?
Georgia felt utterly broken, as if her soul had left her body.
Those words-“lost soul” and “empty shell”-were no longer just metaphors. They were now her reality.
While Georgia’s mind was in turmoil, Billy pulled out a golden bank card and handed it to her. “Mrs. Scott, the young master asked me to give this to you. There’s enough money here to last you a lifetime. He also asked me to tell you… he’s sorry.”
Georgia shot up from her seat, her face pale. She pushed the card away with trembling hands and exclaimed, “No! I don’t believe it. I don’t believe these are Kayden’s words! There’s no way he would say something like this to me! I’ll call him myself. If he has the guts, he can tell me himself!”
With that, Georgia pulled out her phone and dialed Kayden’s number.
Billy watched her with a calm expression, shaking his head with a look of resignation. “It’s useless. The young master has already changed his number. You won’t be able to reach him. Mrs. Scott, I know this is a huge blow to you, but it’s time to face reality.”
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check the number and try again… Sorry…”
The automated female voice from Georgia’s phone echoed alongside Billy’s words. It was like a dagger plunging into her heart, twisting as it went deeper.
Her phone slipped from her hand, and her face turned ashen. She looked utterly defeated, her spirit shattered.
Billy sighed as he watched her. Though it pained him to see her like this, he steeled himself and said firmly, “Mrs. Scott, thank you for everything you’ve done for the young master over the past three years. But in the end, the two of you belong to different worlds. You have your own life to live, and the young master asked me to wish you happiness.”
His words were decisive and cruel.
It was the kind of blessing that felt like a mockery. Like betraying someone and then smiling as you say, “Good luck.”
Georgia’s heart felt as though it had been pierced by a knife, the wound bleeding profusely.
Wish you happiness. Such a hollow phrase. Georgia didn’t need those words. The last thing she needed was such an empty blessing.
What she needed was hope-a future with Kayden. At the very least, she needed reassurance that her three years of waiting hadn’t been in vain.
She had worked so hard to get to this point. She had been so close to seeing a hopeful future. Why did he have to ruin it all?
Clenching her fists, Georgia gritted her teeth, forcing herself to stay calm. “So, what does he want? To divorce me so he can marry another woman?”
Billy waved his hand dismissively. “That’s unnecessary. A marriage certificate means nothing to the young master. Even if he wanted three or four wives, no one could stop him.”
With the influence of the Scott family, that much was true.
“Fine. I understand now. It’s me-Georgia-who’s not good enough for him.”
Unable to hold back her tears any longer, they spilled down her cheeks. Without hesitation, she stood and ran out of the Lincoln limousine.
Billy watched her retreating figure, sighing softly. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Scott. I only did this to protect you.”
