Chapter 68

Book:Tasting The Enemy Published:2025-2-7

Elaine POV
“You’ve been quiet,” I said.
We managed to get out of the Pack House alive. All of us including Opal and Richie. We didn’t know where to go so we drove out of Elvira Falls to a neutral territory. Azaire and I stayed in the car while everyone wandered around in the field.
“I’m kind of scared to talk to you. I don’t know what you’ll say,” he replied.
“I love you.” I meant it.
He rubbed my arm and exhaled. “The only way to save your life is to end your Father’s.”
He was going to kill me anyway but knowing it had to be this way broke my heart. He brought me into this world just to kill me. He did the same to Lawrence too. Neither of us deserved that. I wondered if his late wife knew about his plans and she accepted us because she knew he would kill us eventually.
“I doubt it’ll be that easy now he’s got the coven by his side.”
To our surprise, Lynn didn’t stay to fight with her coven. She escaped with us. She said she would be seen as a traitor and killed. While Avena still had significance in the Pack I believed Lynn.
Now she wouldn’t stop until I was gone.
“Do you really think all the Alphas were killed?” I asked.
He kissed the top of my head. “Some got away the only thing this will do is bring turmoil for Laiken. He’ll want to put his plan in effect soon.”
A knock came from the window.
“We need to figure out our next move,” Richie said.
“Fine,” Azaire grumbled. “Let’s go babe.”
“Wait,” I said, holding his arm. “Are you taking me home after this?”
His brows knitted together. “Of course I am, Elaine. I don’t care what the blood promise says you’re not going back to that creep. I’m not losing you again.”
He wrapped me in his warm embrace and held on as if he never intended to let go.
“I’ll give you back your necklace too.”
“Great! I’d like a few more things too.”
He laughed. “You’re pushing it, babe.”
“I’m your girlfriend remember?” I teased.
“Oh, I do.”
We climbed out of the car to find the group in a circle under the watchful moon and glistening stars.
“Going back to the Blood Moon Pack would be foolish after what Laiken pulled tonight. When he finds out we have his children which are the key ingredients to his plan then he’ll come after us,” Azaire said.
“I’d like to know more about the specifics. He can’t just kill three innocent people on any given day and expect anything other than a curse from the goddess,” Rae commented.
She’s right.
“Of course, he’s waiting for a solstice or Halloween. Seeing as Halloween’s in a few weeks I doubt he’ll wait for the solstice,” Lynn replied.
“It’s nice to have two lovely witches working together,” Richie grinned.
Lynn shot him daggers and Rae rolled her eyes. I rubbed my arms as the breeze out here went through me. Azaire noticed pulled his jacket off and draped it over my shoulders.
“Call Lucas and have him evacuate the Pack house. Mom’s better off where she is,” Azaire added.
“I need to get my Mom safe too. Laiken might use her to get to me,” Lawrence said.
Blazer thought the same.
“I’ll send them to the safe house. You’re going too Opal,” Richie said. They shared a knowing look. They had to do what was best for their baby. Opal nodded but she realized Richie couldn’t go with her.
Azaire rubbed my back and my body stiffened. “Don’t even think about it.”
“Elaine, your life is in danger,” he growled.
“If you send me to the safe house with everyone else, Avena will catch me.”
“She’s right, witches can always track each other’s magic and Avena knows Elaine’s magic like the back of her hand,” Lynn commented.
Yeah, that evil witch is obsessed with me. She also hates my Mother but Gale can take care of herself.
“Alright, we have to move. We’ll gather tomorrow afternoon and Rae, don’t go home, promise me?” Azaire raised a questioning brow at her.
Lawrence planted a hand on her shoulder and she looked up to meet his gaze. “I’ve got her.”
I glanced at Azaire but he wouldn’t acknowledge me. Was something going on between them? Like no one wanted to tell me? What’s next? Lynn and Blazer?
No, Blazer was charming but Lynn didn’t look like she’d fall for his tricks. I don’t know how Francine fell for him. It’s hard for me to find my brothers desirable in any way, especially Blazer.
“Alright while all the couples say goodbye I’m going to go home and snatch all my books before my apartment’s burned to the ground,” Lynn said.
“What if they’re waiting for you?” Rae asked, concern in her tone.
“I’m not a sorry fifteen-year-old anymore. I can handle myself.”
“Not against a coven of witches. I’ll go with you,” I offered.
Azaire glared at me. “Where the hell are you going?”
“I’m not going to let her go alone!”
“You can’t even feel your wolf or use your powers. What are you going to do throw rocks at them?”
I frowned, but he was right. I didn’t know how long my powers would be dormant.
“I’ll go too then. Three witches are better than one even if one of them can’t feel her powers,” Rae said.
Lynn grumbled, “I’m going to be babysitting your asses all night.”
“Whoa, when did we switch to this plan?” Lawrence questioned.
“We didn’t agree to this,” Azaire argued.
But it was too late Lynn raised her hands and a puff of black smoke enveloped us and whisked us away.
