A gentle breeze blew, lifting the hem of Agnes’s skirt and stirring her smooth long hair. Her facial features were soft, her skin delicate like porcelain, and her bright black eyes were filled with kindness.
Jane, though smiling, sighed lightly, her mood suddenly heavy. “Do you know? When I saw the news about the lab explosion that day, my heart clenched. The moment I couldn’t reach Tom on the phone, I felt my world collapse.”
Agnes had felt the same that day. Her heart seemed to tear apart, wrapped in waves of pain. She had cried all the way to the airport like she was losing her mind.
Jane snapped out of her thoughts, suppressing her sadness and forcing a smile. “When I finally got through to Tom, I knew he was safe. But as long as he stayed in that lab one more day, we would worry one more day.”
“I understand how you feel,” Agnes said empathetically. “This decision to leave the lab was Tom’s own choice. I didn’t force him.”
“But he did it for you. He chose to return home because of you,” Jane acknowledged gratefully. “You are a benefactor to our Fritz family.”
As a chemistry professor, Tom had a spirit of selfless dedication ingrained in him from the first day he chose this profession.
Jane knew how much Agnes loved Tom. It was because she couldn’t reach him after the lab explosion that she went abroad to find him. This genuine affection deeply moved Jane.
In this world, aside from parents, if someone else treats you so well without obligation, it is a gift from heaven. Jane cherished such a kind daughter-in-law.
Facing her future mother-in-law’s gaze, Agnes softly spoke, “Mom, we will explain the engagement to Grandma in person tomorrow.”
“Okay.” Jane nodded and then asked gently, “Are you staying here tonight?”
Agnes shook her head. “No, we’re going out this afternoon.”
“Is Tom going with you?”
“Yes.”
“Alright.” Jane smiled and didn’t ask further questions.
This mother-in-law was truly gentle, especially when wearing long dresses; her elegance seemed to emanate from within.
Around two in the afternoon, Agnes and Tom went out without asking Jeffery to drive them. Agnes sat in the passenger seat while Tom drove to the meeting place with Spencer. Agnes had made the call.
Summer was pregnant, so Spencer spent most of his time with his wife lately and rarely went to the club. When Agnes called, he had time to meet.
Spencer drove with his wife to the agreed-upon cafe.
“The little girl has found a boyfriend so quickly,” Summer remarked in surprise. “I wonder what kind of person he is. Nowadays, only time can test a person’s true nature. Marriage is a turning point in a woman’s life.”
Indeed, she feared her sister might not marry well.
“So we need to check him out,” Spencer said confidently. “I have a good eye for men. Whether he’s reliable or responsible can be discerned within five minutes of conversation.”
Summer turned and smiled at him. “I’m just afraid she loves too deeply and won’t listen to us.” Lately, he had been quite favored by their parents-calling them more often than she did as their daughter.
