The girl realized that the angle of her phone’s camera was wrong, capturing the scenery outside the window. She hadn’t planned to tell her grandmother that she was abroad, but now she couldn’t hide it anymore. She smiled and nodded, “Yes.”
The elderly woman’s brows furrowed deeply, her heart sinking. Who had her granddaughter-in-law run off with?
“Who are you with?” The old woman had a bad feeling. “Whose study are you in? There’s a basketball on top of the bookshelf; this is a man’s room, isn’t it?”
Agnes understood her thoughts. She glanced at Tom, who was organizing the bookshelf not far away. Tom looked back at her, and their eyes met.
Since it was a video call, Tom also heard the grandmother’s words. As the girl hesitated to answer, Tom walked over with a book in his hand and appeared in the frame. “Hey, Grandma! It’s my room.”
He greeted the old woman with a warm and pleasant smile on his face. This startled the elderly woman quite a bit! It took her a while to come to her senses.
“Tom?!” she exclaimed, then became very happy. “It’s Tom!” Her smile widened, and she looked at Agnes much more kindly and gently. “Agnes, when did you go abroad?”
“Yes, Grandma, I’m abroad, at Tom’s place,” Agnes said sweetly with a smile. “I’ve been here for two days.”
Jane, who had just put down some roses and picked up a vase, turned to look at the elderly woman in shock.
Did she hear that right? Gone abroad? Living together? Had her son finally come to his senses? Had he taken action secretly?
“This is wonderful! Agnes is so considerate. Did she go there because she’s worried about you?” The grandmother seemed like a different person all of a sudden. “You mustn’t treat her poorly. She cares so much about you. When will you give her a wedding?”
As they continued chatting via video call, Agnes felt both amused and nervous as her grandmother started pushing for marriage. Her cheeks turned red, and she didn’t dare look at Tom.
In the video, Tom stood beside Agnes with a philosophy book in hand. “Grandma, please take care of yourself. Go to bed early and wake up early. Don’t worry too much about me; it might affect your sleep. We’ll discuss our matters ourselves, okay?”
“Alright, alright! Seeing you two together puts my mind at ease! I won’t push,” the elderly woman said cheerfully. “But don’t keep the young lady waiting too long!”
Agnes smiled but didn’t know what to say.
Tom acknowledged his grandmother’s words and then asked if she’d had breakfast yet, urging her to eat soon.
“You should step out for a bit; I have something to discuss with my granddaughter-in-law,” the grandmother said directly. “Once we’re done talking, I’ll go eat breakfast.”
Tom had no choice but to comply. He glanced at Agnes and said goodbye to his grandmother. “I’m going to shower; you two talk.” With that, he turned and left.
After a while, the grandmother asked, “Has he really left? Turn the camera around so I can see.” The elderly woman wasn’t reassured.
Agnes obediently complied, turning the phone around once. “Grandma, he’s really gone. What do you want to say? I’ll listen carefully.”
The old woman looked at her kindly and contentedly. “Bubu, you need to persuade him to marry you soon. The power of love is immense; he shouldn’t be doing dangerous experiments anymore. What if there’s an explosion one day? Can you accept that?”
