Because she had contacted Tom today, Agnes felt energized and suddenly in a sunny mood. One afternoon, just after finishing a meeting at the company, her phone rang. To her surprise, it was Tom’s grandmother calling. As she picked up the phone, Agnes felt inexplicably nervous. She had promised Jane to keep it a secret from Grandma.
Without letting the phone ring for too long, she swiped to answer, “Hello, Grandma.” Her voice was gentle and soft. “How have you been feeling lately?”
“Grandma is doing well,” the elderly woman replied kindly. “Bubu, are you very busy with work?”
“Not too busy.”
“Can we meet up? I’m right downstairs at your company.”
Agnes wondered why she had come over.
The elderly woman quickly explained, “I didn’t come specifically to bother you. I just happened to be out and passing by your company, so I thought I’d see you and chat for a bit.”
“Okay, I’ll be right down. Please wait a moment.” No matter what, Agnes would never refuse the elderly woman because she was Tom’s grandmother. Because she loved him, she would love his family too.
When Agnes walked out of the company door and saw the elderly woman standing not far away, a kind and happy smile appeared on her face. Her silver hair was neatly combed, she leaned on a cane, and she looked energetic.
“Bubu! Come here!” The elderly woman waved at her happily.
“Grandma!” Agnes quickened her pace and ran over. “Long time no see, Grandma!”
The elderly woman reached out to hug her, and Agnes responded with an embrace.
“Am I interrupting your work? Will your boss get mad at you?” Although the elderly woman wanted to see her, she was still a bit worried.
Agnes smiled and shook her head. “No, Grandma. There’s a cafe downstairs. Let’s go sit there.”
“Okay, okay.” The elderly woman calculated the days. “You’ve been engaged to Tom for about a month now, right?”
“Yes, almost.”
“So… has there been any change in your body?” The elderly woman looked at her kindly and expectantly before finally glancing at her stomach.
Agnes was too young to understand what she meant by that.
She shook her head. “No, why would there be any change in my body?”
“Is your menstrual cycle normal?” Grandma held her hand and asked directly. “Are you pregnant?”
Agnes was stunned.
In Grandma’s mind, they had spent the night together.
Seeing the expectant look on Grandma’s face, Agnes blushed deeply. “No.”
“Really not?”
“No, Grandma.” Agnes avoided eye contact and accompanied the elderly woman to a table as the waiter approached. Agnes asked her, “Grandma, what would you like to drink?”
“I’m not particular; I just came to chat with you today,” Grandma said with a smile as she looked at the young girl sitting across from her with increasing fondness.
Her skin was like cream, her face like a peach blossom, and her long black hair flowed over her shoulders, making her look youthful and beautiful.
“Two lattes then,” Agnes told the waiter.
“Okay, please wait a moment.”
When Agnes looked back at the elderly woman sitting across from her again, she found that Grandma had been watching her all along. “Bubu, have you been in touch with Tom recently?”
“Yes,” Agnes nodded but didn’t know how much detail to give.
“If you get pregnant, you must keep the baby,” Grandma said worriedly. “Don’t make any decisions on your own just because you’re in a long-distance relationship and not married yet.”
