She couldn’t fathom Tom’s emotions, only hearing his low voice, “I understand, thank you, Mom.”
“What do you understand? Are you going to confess to her? Are you going to pursue her? Make this fake thing real, so you can explain to Grandma.” Jane was truly worried for him. “If you have feelings for her, I can help you! You don’t dislike her, right? You actually like her a bit, don’t you? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have asked her to pretend.”
“Mom, matters of the heart… aren’t as simple as you think,” Tom sighed lightly.
“It’s not as complicated as you think either. Are you really planning to dedicate your whole life to science and never get married?” Jane couldn’t help but tease. “It’s already good enough that she doesn’t mind. Experiments are dangerous!”
Tom fell silent again.
After listening to his mother nag for a few more minutes, he responded, “Alright, alright.”
“Make sure you seize the opportunity. That’s the situation.” Then Jane hung up the phone, not wanting to disturb him further.
Tom put down his phone and looked deeply at the computer screen. He deleted the words on the screen and logged out of his email.
After hearing his mother’s words, he had no mood to reply to emails.
Thinking about the boy he saw at the airport that day, Tom Fritz’s expression darkened. What was Bubu thinking?
She hadn’t contacted him for many days, not even reporting about the little kitten.
She had sent him an email saying goodbye. Was she deciding to start a new life?
If she was starting a new life, Tom probably wouldn’t disturb her; he would wish her happiness.
He closed his computer and walked out of the study to the wine cabinet.
When Jeffery saw Tom sitting alone on the terrace drinking, he felt heartbroken. Was this because of love?
But Tom didn’t want to talk about it, and Jeffery didn’t feel right asking further.
However, he vaguely guessed it might be related to Miss Campbell…
After drinking some wine, Tom Fritz thought for a long time.
In the evening, he couldn’t resist picking up his phone and dialing that number.
At this time in Arkpool City, it was early morning. Agnes was busy working in her office when her phone suddenly rang. She picked it up and saw “Little Cat” displayed on the screen.
Her heart warmed; she was stunned for a moment before sliding to answer. “…” She felt like she was dreaming.
“…”
The call connected, and both remained silent.
“Hello?” Agnes cautiously spoke first, thinking he might have dialed by mistake or accidentally pressed it.
“Are you busy?” Tom’s voice was low and gentle as he asked her.
It was a familiar tone that instantly stirred all the buried longing in the girl’s heart. She smiled and replied, “Not busy. Are you done with your work?”
“Yes.”
Then there was another brief silence.
Agnes was quite happy but didn’t know what to say to him. She became particularly careful, afraid of being misunderstood or annoying him.
At the same time, she worried that Aunt Jane had talked to him about the fake engagement…
“How’s Little Kitten lately? Has it gained weight?” Tom found a topic.
“Bubu is doing well; it seems to have gained a little weight.” The girl answered.
Tom followed up with another question, “Have you gained weight?”
“Me?” Agnes was slightly stunned before smiling and replying, “Not really; I think I’m still the same.”
In fact, she might have lost weight because of longing; her appetite and sleep weren’t good.
“Hmm,” Tom’s tone was gentle.
Silence…
Agnes felt a bit uneasy but also very happy that he took the initiative to call her.
Because she loved him so much, even her breathing was cautious; she cherished every moment of this time together.
“And you?” She continued the conversation softly asking, “Have you gained weight?” She genuinely cared about him but didn’t dare ask directly for fear of being abrupt.
